So I'm looking for a large creature that has the lowest ECL from Core+XPH? And no, not something that just counts as large like the half-giant, but an actual large creature that is playable as a character race.

You will run into problems. Namely 5 ft corridors. Minotaurs are okay characters though.

Races of destiny has the half ogre at LA+2.
The half-minotaur(some issue of dragon??) makes you large at LA+1, but arguably has some game balance issues.

Ogres, Centaurs and Minotaurs are the lowest LA+HD creatures in Core.

The XPH has half-giants as a LA+1 race. They aren't large but have many of the advantages of large creatures.

no Half-giants, pay attention to the first post.

Otherwise, Ogres are good, Minotaurs are better, Centaurs, not so much because they don't get reach.

If reach is all you're after, take the Willing Deformity and Tall feats from book of vile darkness. Makes you tall and gives you +5ft reach I believe.

True, Centaurs don't get reach, but they get the increased carrying capacity plus the ability to put a lance to much better use (and they're faster).

Minotaurs get their own advantages: reach, powerful charge, never flat-footed.

Ogres are just big and dumb IMO.

Of these, centaurs have the lowest ECL

Centaurs and ogres both have an ECL of 6 (without any class levels). Minotaurs are ECL 8.

Granted, your mental stats will take a huge hit with an ogre, +10 Str is kinda nice. I guess it all depends on what you're looking to make.

Half-ogre (races of destiny) has the lowest ecl, which is 2. Other good choice would be quinametin (Dragon issue 317). They look like towering comely humans (rumors tell that they have titan blood in their veins). Quinametins ecl is 4.

If you're stuck to using Core I'd say the best bet is ogre or minotaur. Non-core Races of Destiny has the LA+2 half-ogre.

The two best low LA core large races are minotaur and centaur (two taurs:rolleyes: )

At ECL8 a Minotaur makes a killer barbarian, WarBlade based on Iron heart or any fighting class. Considering what you might become at level 20 I'd consider minotaur Barbarian12 Straight, with strenght through the stratosphere and the best BaB, You'll pull your weight at every part of the game.

Centaurs are the best thought, they have better ability bonuses (like a mental bonus) and they have two natural attack, incredible carrying capacity, and the ability to make devastating charges as well as excellent mobility experts thanks to superior speed. For an exotic paladin, centaurs are probably your best bet at their ECL8
I'd say Paladin5/Fist of Raziel7, taking charging smite of course and watch enemies get crushed under your Holy evil Smiting Divine sacrifice hoofs of doom! (Remember there is a spell that grants the ability to make a full attack at the end of a charge, as well, according to the rules, you can buy enchanted horseshoes, +1 valourous thundering, combined with the spell for full charge attack:eek: )

Centaur all the way...

In races of stone, there is the Goliath who are ogre-like in stature, but they may have an LA.

Goliath are also not large, just kind of large.

Too bad you don't have non-core... Maug from Fiend Folio (at least I think it's fiend folio, it's one of the 'fiend' books) is la+3, 2rdh - ecl 5.
