Could a Hellbred breed? [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-27-06, 02:35 PM Hmmm. The Hellbred as detailed in the Tyrants of the Nine Hells are essentially reincarnations of evil souls who repented just a little too late, but were given a second chance, albeit with severely fiendishly corrupted bodies.

Now, the thing is, is that it isn't quite clear whether they can actually, as their name suggests, breed. They do have apparent genders, and apparently it is canonical that from time to time fiends and undead can reproduce sexually, albeit with other creatures.

In general, I'm planning that they can, just because they're my new favorite race, especially considering they're a humanoid subtype and not even an outsider.

12-27-06, 02:47 PM I think a hellbred could bred with a hellbred. Only the child in question will be cursed with the sins of their parents thus then no hellbred would want to put their child through that.

Hellbreds are obcessed with SAVING THEMSELVES. Doesn't allow for much of a social life. Even among the VERY few who acctually MEET another Hellbred.

Nah...Anything short of matyrdom isn't going to be enough. If you stopped to smell the roses, enjoy life again, even for a moment. Your going back to Hell.

And how does one save themself? By saving others. That means you have to become quite good at talking to others so you can find the situations in which you could attempt to redeem yourself.

I do think a hellbred would not be interested in procreating unless it were something that would further that goal though. While they want to save themselves, most of them feel that they are doomed and have no chance to redeem themselves.

I'm playing a hellbred that spent years in depression due to lack of having opportunity to prove himself. There was no great crisis for him to right, no great blunder to fight... until the current story-line in which he's revitalized with hope. He had a daughter and wife before his scourging, and he remembers them well. He's not so obsessed with being saved to consider their well-being if he were to meet up with them again. (Of course, due to the current story line, his wife would be a old woman, and his daughter would be closer to his age, due to the fact of being under the effect of a stasis type spell for 14 years)

Me and my DM noted that it doesn't have to be a human who went through the scourging. I let the DM have the liberty of deciding a few things for my character. Such as he doesn't remember his previous name, just pretty much his sins and his family. I don't even know if he was a human or some other race before the scourging.

05-07-07, 08:35 AM Since Hellbred seem to be a mix of Humanoid, Outsider, and Planetouched to some degree or another, and since all 3 of those beings can usually procreate, I see no reason why a Hellbred couldn't procreate.

It could even be part of an attempt at redemption- producing an offspring who, in the eventual death of the Hellbred, could continue their good works. It might not count for much with some deities, but I think a lot of them might give a few brownie points for it.

05-07-07, 11:03 AM Assuming that Hellbred in your game aren't endlessly tormented and will never be done doing good, and actually manage to find some level of redemption and peace before they die again, I might just rule that, before they are redeemed, their children might be tieflings or have an infernal or abyssal bloodline.

If a Hellbred redeems itself, I might allow them the choice to change their race back to whatever it was in their evil life, and their lives can resume, albeit with a conscience and a newfound appreciation of what they have. Children from there might have a fiendish bloodline, or might be normal, whatever the DM says works in their cosmology.
