Another thing I was curious about is how the two corrolate, how do you determine lvl adj from CR? The shade has no level adjustment. It's not intended for PC use. Level adjustment is not correlated with challenge rating. Challenge rating is a measure of how well a monster fights in combat against a party of four PCs of the same level. Level adjustment is a measure of how powerful a monster is compared to a human (and any other LA +0 race). They're two very different things. Many abilities work quite differently for monsters than they do for PCs. Examples that come to mind are fast healing (the PC doesn't need to drain the cleric's resources between fights, for monsters the ability doesn't do much unless it's very high), the teleport spell-like ability powerful outsiders get (the PC can travel anywhere, monsters with teleport can just run away), and damage reduction (the PC tends to fight monsters using natural weapons, while the monster is usually fighting a party that uses manufactured weapons and magic). |
