I've heard references about a dark template. Would someone help me with some details?

It's from the Tome of Magic. It's in the section on shadowcasting...

Ah, the dark template. Hide in Plain sight at second level. Tasty. huge bonuses to hide and move silently. Nummtastic.

What to get really sick? Toss the dark template on a Whisper Gnome. At second level? A crazy +20 to hide.

The plan was to throw the dark template onto a drow for wizard/rogue gestalt. My problem is that while alot of people talk about it I can't find the crunchy details online.

I hope you're going with lesser drow + dark template + level buy off. Templates on casters are typically a bad idea unless you just really need some aspect of it to help your casting... like draconic creature (again, + buy off) for practical metamagic. You don't really want to slow down your casting more than you have to.

I ended up dropping the dark template due to not being able to find the book. This isn't for a pure caster build. I'm making a gestalt rogue to shadow dancer and wizard swashbuckler build. The wizard will only be advancing to level 11 in the 20 level build.

in the book, there's a magic item that grants you the Dark Template as a constant effect if you have 22,000gp lying about
