DM is giving us a possible opprtunity to make one as a henchman (we need a thief & it'd be fun to have a nutjob as one).

I'm finding some info on them but it's kind of stretched & messy.
The books I've found suggest using the MM template. So here's what I've come up with.

3d humanoid.
Poison-Use
Spell-like: At will Darkness, Ghost Sound//1/day Sound Burst, Daze
Spell Resistance: 15
Sneak Attack +1d6
Madness: +6 CHA/-6 WIS can use CHA for will saves.
Weakness: Vulnerability to Sunlight 1 CON per hour exposed to sunlight

So.... Questions I have.
Level Adjustment: It lists 0/+2 for sane. Would +1 make sense for a player character? 0 seems too low but I want to keep his maddness if the DM lets me.

I'm not the best with the Savage Species racial conversion rules. From what I understand.

He basically would be considered level 5 (3HD +1racial) at level 1 rogue. BA +3, Ref +3 Will +3, prof: simple, repeating crossbow, short sword.

+4 DEX, +2 CON, -6 WIS. +6 CHA

Would he get Feats for 1 & 3 HD but not get another until 7th (3HD +3 rogue +1 racial at that point)?

Spell Like abilities based on race HD+class +CHA mod for DC?

Spell Resistance (biggie I know) DC15 listed. Would it be 15 or like 12+HD+level?

Skills: +4 hide & move silently
---------------

I guess the bigger question should be is there a player character write up in a book I can't find?

It doesn't list 0 for insane. It lists "--", which means WotC doesn't consider an insane Derro to be playable as a PC. If your DM allows you to play as an insane Derro, the LA should still be +2. It is stronger rather than weaker as insane compared to sane.

You have the racial features correct, except that Derro are of the Monstrous Humanoid type, not the Humanoid type.

You are correct on feat acquisition. His 3rd feat would come with his 6th actual HD (level adjustment doesn't count for this). Level adjustment also does not count for skill points or for the 4th-HD ability score bonus.

As for Spell Resistance, that's very much up to your DM. Those races whose SR scales with HD usually say so in the racial description (Drow), but it's not unreasonable to rule it that way also for other races.

Spell-Like Abilities are not based on HD at all. Save DCs for Spell-Like Abilities are found using this formula: 10+spell level+Charisma modifier.

(Derro don't have any Supernatural Abilities, but in case you need it for some other time: Save DCs for Supernatural Abilities are found using this formula: 10+(1/2 total HD)+Constitution modifier).

You need to explain a little bit more about your campaign, and why you are gaining a henchman.

An insane Derro wouldn't be a very good henchman, really. He wouldn't follow any of your commands, and would be as likely to attack you as help you. Plus it doesn't even have an LA, so I don't think it can be used as a cohort. I'm not sure if your "henchman" counts as one of your party member's cohort, or what it would be considered.

I'd go for the sane Derro.

Note that a sane Derro loses the Madness ability, so they get +0 Wis +0 Cha and use Wisdom for their Will saves, as normal.

Explanation: The party is in the teens level-wise.

We've freed a large group of Derro from a couple of Mind Flayers who had them as mental slaves. They're currently following my dwarf worshiping him since he freed them (cerebromancer). I play good insane characters which is why I thought it would be fun to play an insane one.

I'll have to agree on the +2 level adjustment, so 6th ECL at 1st level rogue, they get a lot of abilities.

I know they wouldn't make a reliable henchman, that's part of the fun. He'll do things like stand over people when they're sleeping so they wake up with him staring at him. The DM has one that's fanatically licking soap as he walks with us. Maybe I'll use him :D

I figure the drow sorcereress will end up blasting him anyways before too long but he might be fun for a bit.
