Answer: "Half-celestial" is an inherited template that can be added to any living, corporeal creature with an Intelligence score of 4 or higher and nonevil alignment (referred to hereafter as the base creature).A half-celestial uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here. Size and Type The creature’s type changes to outsider. "Vampire" is an acquired template that can be added to any humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature). So, a creature that is already a half-celestial cannot become a vampire because it is an outsider. A creature that is already a vampire cannot become a half-celestial because it is no longer living.
Demortis 05-02-07, 03:40 PM	If a template changes the base creature’s type, the creature also acquires the augmented subtype unless the template description indicates otherwise. The augmented subtype is always paired with the creature’s original type. Unless a template indicates otherwise, the new creature has the traits of the new type but the features of the original type.
okaynowa 05-02-07, 04:18 PM	"Augmented humanoid" is a subtype; even if the vampire had such a subtype, its overarching, primary, important type is still Undead. A half-celestial often has the "native outsider" subtype, and may or may not have the "augmented [blank]" subtype, depending on whether it acquired the template or was born with it. In any event, it's main type is still Outsider. The SRD does not mention either template granting the "augmented" subtype, though one could certainly argue that they should. In both cases, though, what creatures the templates can be applied to depends on the major type, the one-word type in front of any parenthetical sub-types. If you want a half-celestial vampire, I ain't gonna be the one to stop you. I might, however, suggest that the process of becoming a vampire transforms a half-celestial creature into a half-fiend, in keeping with the thematic shift in character. A blood-sucking half-angel sounds to me like a fallen half-angel.

okaynowa 05-02-07, 06:48 PM	The augmented subtype appears to serve little purpose but to point out what the base creature used to be. A half-celestial is still an Outsider, and a vampire is still an Undead. What you have to determine is if your proposed half-celestial vampire is primarily one or the other, and make the one you didn't choose the augmented sub-type. If you're at all inclined, Savage Species offers further discussion on "The Type Pyramid" (page 142-144) and what trumps what. Of course, it also offers a sidebar on "Breaking the Rules" which basically says, "Make whatever anomalous beast you want." So again, knock yourself out.
