is it just me, or does everyone hate elves, dwarves, and pretty much every race except human?

I don't think that's true. I only hate one race, well really one person of that race in D&D. Jarlaxel, oh how I hate that drow.

sorry couldn't help but respond that you spelled "Racist" wrong

and.... i for one, despise humans in DnD. mainly because i feel the other races are much more powerful in each of their own ways. humans are too general for my manically min-maxer ideals :-p

Yes, the shortest lived and traditionally the most flexible race is the one that is general. Also in most worlds the most common race by a large margin, except some of the smaller monster races.

Actually, that would be a 'speciesism', or in D20 its 'subtypism' since all those are not of the human species or the D20 Humanoid(human) subtype. ;)

If you hate everything does that make you racist or just consistent?

Depends on the nature of the hate:

I hate elves because of their snooty, pointy ears = racist.

I hate elves because they're not me and can never meet my expectations of what a being should be doing with their time = consistent.

If you are racist towards every race thats still racism, if you just hate everyone for reasons not tied into racial traits that is consistency.

I hate elves myself. Mostly because they're mentally retarded as a race. I mean what else would you call an elf that takes 100 years to learn less than a human learns in 15 (counting the bonus skill point). I'm pretty sure they spend all their time on peyote, which is what enhances their "noticing things" checks.

You'd get an automatic search on a secret door if everything was glowing and wriggling around from your constant flashbacks.

"Hey guys, that wall melted just now and I could like totally see a secret door, man!"

"uhh, Mialee, we're in a forest and that's not a wall, it's an owlbear."

I think it's just you. Seriously, most people seem to have it in for one race or a class or whatnot, but I don't think that everyone hates all the nonhuman races. I mean, why would they be playing D&D if that were the case? Why not play Houses & Humans?

Now, you could always play such a character. Might I suggest worshipping Wastri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wastri)?

People play human for the feat. End. Feat = good. Better than the plus one to hit or ac from the +2 stat.

And yeah, ever world is overly populated with humans. Some of the longer life span races should take over considering NPC elves should all be like level 10 for being 200 years old.

No, and don't bother. Those who agree with you will agree regardless, and those who don't - myself included - won't be swayed, at least as long as your "claim" remains in this form.

It simply seems strange to have any emotional charge for a D&D race. I understand being irked at the mentality of the players, or the writer for slacking off and coming up with a half-baked text, but the race itself?

Must be just you... I see more and more half-dragon/fiend/whatever races these days then ever before. 3.0 and 3.5 only ENHANCED the playing anything BUT a human that begain with the humanoids handbooks back in AD&D.

I almost never see people play humans anymore.

That was my intial claim. If you don't agree, that's fine. I'm fine with the fact that I'm racist against a non-existent race and don't really care what you think! :D

I have no conclusive evidence that the non-existent, made-up race of elves are in fact retarded hippies with LSD/peyote problems. I do know that if you consider their stats from a mechanical position you get the following fact:

A 160 year old elf could very easily be 1st level with the same skill points as a relatively stupid 15 year old human (8 intelligence).

They've had 10 times as long to learn things and just barely keep up with the village idiot of human-town.

I don't know how you classify this aspect of elven learning, but to me it is classic retardation. They're lucky that they have fewer children and live so long or else they wouldn't even be a playable race. It also helps explain their apparant lack of +10 to all knowledge checks.

G- Hello, I'm Geralithataian, I've done crazy amounts of drugs for almost 110 summers. I can cast cantrips and magic missile without falling over, I can use a sword and a bow and see things good, I'm a magical elf!

T- Hello, I'm Tempest the 6th, I'm 16. I can do the same thing. I know more than you about anything I want to focus on and have a useful feat for my class (because I trained in it, rather than bows and swords). You were born the same day as my Great-Great-Great-Grand Father, who was known as the greatest wizard of his age, as were all of his sons until me. Chances are there will be at least 3 more of my line to be born and become better than you before you catch up with Tempest the 1st, who in case you forgot by now was born the same day as you. Are you listening still?

G- Sorry, I thought I heard a secret door. What were you saying?

Personally, I rule that NPC elves are, in general, higher level than humans, thanks to their greater experience; humans are quicker learners than elves, but not to the degree necessary to make up for their shorter lifespan (humans learn about twice as quickly, elves live about five times as long).

For instance, a typical 40 year old human might be a commoner 2. A typical 200 year old elf might be a commoner 5.

For PCs, of course, this is all dropped, and ECLs are generally equal across the party, barring stuff like death and resurrection, spending XP on spells and item creation, etc.

This allows for a bit of the typical Tolkienian "elves are superior" trope without having to redesign elves as some sort of LA +2 race or something.

That is an interesting idea, one I might adapt for my own uses, but I would like to remind people that those first 110 years or so (for elves) are childhood. Generally this wouldn't be real world experience, as elves age about seven and a half times slower - making early life kinda like a very long dream.

Also, I hate people that only play humans, and I hate that a races' "favored" class basically never comes into play. I am also racist against the drow as the name makes my skin crawl and that fanboys have ruined any chance for affection I might've had for them. I also have a very strong dislike of anything "half-" (besides half-orc, elf, or giant). Those too get under my skin.
As a side question to the racist end; are vampires a race? cause I hate them too.

In response to the OP I hate 1/2 anythings or decendants of _______.

Tieflings, 1/2 dragons and so on really **** me off. I really hate on the 1/2 dragon 1/2 drow vampire nonsense.

So, am I a racist, a templatist, a bigot or what?

I like a more vanilla fantasy. You know the kind. Where I pretend to be a guy wearing armor, that just killed a 200' long fire breathing serpent with 3' of steel.

Being several generations removed from some kind of fiend doesn't make me an adventurer it makes me a freak.

Actions make you heroic bloodlines like that are a crutch and a silly one too. Like having a surname with dark, black, or dragon in it. I pity the fool that names his half elf Blackmantle or Darkwolf or Dragonsteak.

How is that different than the Orc's religion: Only Orcs are allowed to worship Gruumsh, and Gruumsh demands that all non-believers be slaughtered viciously.

For my part, I'm annoyed at the extent to which Elves are overplayed in D&D. Hell, in most settings, Gnomes are last-minute "we-should-really-put-them-somewhere" afterthought, at best, and a race of crappy comic relief at worst (both of these being the result of unplayably crappy abilities from earlier editions), and meanwhile there's a dozen or so different subraces of Elves running around, because there needs to be at least one elf that's better than a human at every possible thing someone can do. It is, quite simply, annoying. And dumb.

And then there's the whole "Elves make good Wizards" thing: Mechanically, they make *terrible* Wizards: -2 to Con on top of d4 hit dice and a must-have Con-based skill*? SIGN ME UP

But then you have all this heaped up flavor about how elvish magic represents the pinnacle of spellcasting, so we get thrown a whole bunch of extra feats, prestige classes, and substitution levels, because even though Elves are ill-suited for the class by default, they need to be awesome at it anyway.

*
Compare this to a Gnome's -2 Str, +2 Con, Small size (+1 to AC and attack), and bonus to save DCs of some of their spells. On the other hand, the ability to use a longbow *would* be nice... if Wizards ever had strength scores to speak of.

Can't help give my 2 cents... but yes, i'm one of those people who dislikes dwarves. but thats cause i'm not like them and i can't immagine any of my characters as dwarves.

I like elves, i just don't like the 1001 perceptions of them and how (i'm told this 2nd hand, so if i'm wrong don't be a cridict). like in 2nd ed, elves could choose not to walk away from life. or as a freind of mine likes them, thier imortal as far as age is concerned. i just think that elves are too revered (sp?).

For the record, i hate being humans. heck! i'm human every blasted day of the year! i know what thats like. I prefer to play oddball races like thri-kreen and the like. Or generally world exclusive races i.e. cat people, demigod disendants ect...

I think I may be the first to post in agreement with the OP.

From a character creation standpoint, I can never bring myself to create anything other than human. It seems that no matter what type of character I am trying to create, the bonus skill points and bonus feat will help to flesh him out much better than anything the other races can offer.

Even outside of a mechanics standpoint, I personally like playing humans much better than any other race in the book. More so than any other race, humans are likely to fit in easily in the most places in a standard campaign setting.

It's not so much that I hate other races, and I'm fine dealing with them in game, but I never actually play anything other than a human character.

The main reason I dislike most of the sentients in D&D is that most of them are about as different from humans as an 'alien' on Star Wars on Star Trek; in short they're just humans with physical deformities and seemingly random and unexplained racial abilities that have more to do with them pulling it from older editions and popular fantasy then anything that actually makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint or the current edition's game mechanics.

Cut out their weak social and magical justifications and what do you have? A bunch of mutated humans.

Dwarves? Short, hairy humans.
Gnomes? Shorter, wishy-washy humans.
Halflings? Even shorter, surly humans.
Elves? Narrower, shorter, pointy-eared egotistical humans.
Half-whatsits? Humans with funny faces ( that's about what the racial bonuses entail at any rate.. )

Really, what makes a race so different that it can't be done by a human subtype from X continent or hemisphere? From a particular human culture or civilization that is similiarly stylized? And after all some of the greatest and best antagonists and protagonists from fiction are humans.

But that's just my preference. I think D&D is way too choked with different 'races' of humanoid sentients that are hardly at all different enough from humans to justify being a seperate species, much less having their own racial abilities and bonuses.

One model of campaign settings I really enjoyed was the Iron Kingdoms; each kingdom was broken down by regional differences, which Human characters could take said regional bonuses as their racial instead of the default one. I also think D&D should entail a Profession choice you make at character creation, further adding to this as well as giving some point to having ranks in Profession -- i'm sick of everyone automatically assuming that all adventurers are shiftless, drifting murderous hobos! The current way it's set us only kicks dirt into the eyes of anyone who actually wants to have a profession or any sort of skills in creating items. Then again there's too many bloody Skills as is.. :|

Face it, the main reason most people take a non-Human race is to just be 'different'. A 'unique little snowflake'. Most of them roleplay them like they would a Human, but retain the appearance ( and stereotypes ) of the core race. Do most players even know how to roleplay an Elf or a Dwarf? Can the grasp the mentality of those races? It's not playing a quirky looking Human, that is for sure.

While I kept the racial bonuses effectively the same, I gave campaign specific reasons why humans, elves, and orcs look so much alike and can interbreed, and then took all the other races and made them into separate evolutionary categories. Most of the sentient races aside from humans, elves, orcs, halflings, and kobolds were the result of primordial breeding of changeling's ancestors.

Bander replace core halfling, they were designed as "sentient pets" by the Ancient race. They're effectively upright, small-sized ferret-people with the racial abilities of the halflings (minor changes: +low-light vision and light sensitivity, racial feats for a minor bite attack).

Kinth replace core dwarves, they were a changelingbred race that combined the features of a mountain dwelling, land-based primate (like a gorilla) and small cave dwelling ursines (bears). The result is a bear/primate that likes living in caves. They have the grumpy nature of bears and the she-kinth are highly protective of their dens/children. Very clannish, but more like a primate tribe with the bear's protective nature than just a stand alone "I'm a dwarf so I'm in a clan". Were selectively bred as a slave race by the elves for several generations, creating the modern clan separations.

The "Ancients" were a highly magical race (think Progress level 8, but with magic) and they eventually split into separate races, each member dividing into 4 parts (orc, elf, gnome, goblin) representing a different aspect of their personality (id, super-ego, knowledge, secrecy).

Humans are actually the result of a changeling breeding with an elf and an orc (they used to be able to act as a go-between for 2 separate species). Humans are effectively "bad copies" of the Ancients (metagame: this is because they don't have the features of a gnome and goblin bred into them). That's why they're so versatile.

I also just went ahead and wrote "elves are effectively retarded" in my campaign description on the Illearan (elves). They take a lot longer to learn things because they don't grow cells (including brain cells) as quickly. Once they learn it, it takes forever to forget it, but learning is a slow process for them. They are able to speak a few moments (maybe days, I don't remember) after birth though, so it's kind of balanced.

I especially like this part! But yes, I had never thought of that really, though I do like it more. If they're technically a seperate species then why would one assume they evolved from primates? There's many other animal family trees!

I especially like the connection between Dwarves and Bears, almost seems like it should've been more.. obvious to me.

Because they're a huge selling point for customers, as they are 'teh uber hawt' and have pointy ears, or because they actually took the time to be thoughtful and creative in their inclusion in the world?

Many things in D&D have a distinctly sci-fi feel (I'm looking at you MIND FLAYERS). We travelled back in time to avoid our destructions! We'll eat your brains and snatch your bodies in our space ships run by giant brains!

But there is no reason fantasy should automatically have all hominid races either. And really, it makes for boring art.

Oh another short human, oh look this one has pointy ears. . . :pbbbtt:

Precisely. Campaign determines what race qualities fit.

well, racism is utterly fantastic as a role playing mechanic. I'm all for it, in my games. What I truly am sick of though, I as someone pointed out in a fashion far more intelligent then i could, but im tired of every race in dnd being a human with different proportions.

Gnomes? Dwarves? Elves? orcs? Halflings? Aasimar? tiefling? Asheratis? bhuka? Goliath? Xeph? elan? even friggin dromites are just a badguy from dragon ball z, complete with laser beam built into the race. LOLth. I mean seriously.

I've only been Dming for a few years, and I'm already tired of gnomes and elves. I hate gnomes because dnd core doesnt need ANOTHER short ugly human race. And i hate elves because for a race of nature loving warriors, their favored class is wizard? Lets ask a druid what he thinks about arcane magic.

Me -- So mr druid, how do you perceive individuals changing the laws of nature to suit their will with little to no regard for the balance of the laws of nature, or even physics?
Druid -- ARRHHHGG
Me -- Well put.

Elves should HATE wizards. Not have a favored class. Maybe favored enemy:wizards. Who knows!

In my 3.0 players handbook I completely censored gnomes with a black sharpie, covered the pictures, gods, weapons and all racial info of the gnomes, it was like looking at roswell documents.

I hate elves they are metro sexual cannibals, and thats just not cool.

In the world I run I actually don't use any races from the players handbook, I have about 25 custom races for the players to choose from.

Just thought I'd clear something up real quick. Technically, since humans, elves and orcs can all breed together, they're part of the same species. They're different breeds; humans are like labrador retrievers, elves are like border collies, and orcs are like pitbulls. Just some food for thought.

Now, back on topic. I personally dislike dwarves, which is ironic, because it's the only race I can RP very well. I'm currently having a lot of fun RPing as an elf, but the more I think about it, the more I seem like a pointy-eared human who is super paranoid about dieing. Not that all elves are paranoid about death, but mine is. I think its a fun quirk and it's way different from my previous character, a gunpowder toting, border-line suicidal gnome. Anyway, thats my two cents.

Which has its own set of issues, since WotC is otherwise pretty firm that +2 to a casting stat is an automatic level adjustment. Also the whole "no discernable flavor difference from High Elves" issue. Also, the "ridiculous amounts of subrace creep, particularly among races for which it makes no sense" issue. Mechanically, it's a decent option for optimization purposes, but from both a design perspective and a world-building perspective, there's plenty of reason to dislike them.

Attrition probably kills them off early eh? Really ancient drow are going to be very rare in drow society, because they put a big emphasis on survival of the fittest, but i don't see any reason they would have any genetic disposition for living shorter lives.

People probably don't like other races because of the fanboys (and girls). And the munchkins. And the roleplaying difficulties.

Give me Katarl Katarl (Ctarl) anyday (*no* idea what the level adjustment on those would be).

If you can make it through Drizzt's angst-filled monologues, you find that they don't live any shorter lives; he mentions a few times that he might live to be 700.

My personal favorite races are elves (of all flavors), changelings, and humans, in that order. A Warforged might be fun to play some day, though I'd have a hard time convincing a DM to allow one in a non-Eberron setting.

Of the races I've created or statted out, I definitely like dracoheirs and gelflings the best.

They are physically mature by around 25, but treated as children by their communities until they are over 100. The difference between a 110 1st level elf and a 15 year old human? The human has been helping out his parents with the family business since he was 10. The elf has been picking flowers for teh past 100 years.

But really, I would only play 3 different races, unless an urge really hit me: Human, Wild Elf (because High Elf is lame), or Anthropomorphic Ferret. edit: or maybe a barbarian badger, if i really felt like it.

Which in itself makes no sense, given how high they've evaluated physical stats. Just look at the half-orc, for crying out loud - or the vanara if you have OA. It looks like a strength boost is worth way more than that of any casting stat.

A boost in a stat is always going to be evaluated as worth more than a penalty because the system is balanced towards fairly optimal characters.

Thus the Half-orc strength bonus is balanced based on a Half-orc barbarian or fighter. The Halfling Dex bonus for a Halfling rogue etc.
A straight +2/-2 stat combination will generally be taken to be a net positive, since it is balanced on the basis that the player will min-max at least a little.

Not only humanoid races of course, there is a place for intelligent creatures who share no similarities with humans in D&D. But while it's quite unrealistic to find humanoid creatures on some far away planet, there is no reason why there shouldn't be more than one humanoid race in a fantasy setting in addition to more bizzare creatures.

Out-of-character, I find racism against the various fantasy races of D&D a little silly, but not really offensive. I don't really get worked up about it, but I often find stuff like "elves are all a bunch of sissies!" rather tiresome and un-entertaining.

In-character, racism depends. I'd expect most rangers to be rather racist against their favored enemy (not always -- sometimes they're just well trained against a specific enemy and such, but I think there's usually an element of racism). Paladins, by contrast, are not going to be racist much, and those who do harbor racist sentiments usually try to struggle against them and overcome them. For most other classes, such as barbarians, commoners, rogues, wizards, etc, racism is somewhere in between -- such people might or might not be racist, all depending on background, attitudes, etc. The fundamental question is whether a PC's racism contributes to or disrupts the game. A dwarf ranger who hates orcs, including half-orcs, might best not be in the same party as a half-orc druid, and the players and the DM should all hammer out such matters before playing. On the other hand, a racist PC can, in the proper context, be a very interesting character to play, and there are many interesting possibilities that could exist, from a virulent, hateful barbarian to a "scientific" psion who can graph out his racism with regression analyses and statistics to a well-meaning cleric who ministers to the "lesser races" with condescending benevolence.

Racism over fictional races ?

The only race I truly dislike is pretty much anything with " Half " in its name. Good example would be Half-Orcs or Half-Elves. If we're allowed LA of +1/+2... I call always call dibs on playing the Drow PC before anyone else can :D

Average Interest: Gnome, Warforged, and Dwarf
Low Interest: Orc, and subrace (Any)

Agreed, well, about elves. Elves are too full of themselves in general. In one of my campaign settings, they actually advance only slightly slower than humans, but they become venerable not so long after humans do, and stay that way for a long time.

This way the elves gain the flavor of simply being a wise race, not the "superior race"... a mentality which has always bugged me.

Dwarve's racism is just funny, and tinker gnomes are cool. :P

One of the best thinks of D&D are the races, because they are the bases of the world, they are the difference of cultures, religions, ideals, apareances, preferences...

When I play I love to play with a dwarf of another races, because they have a lot of cool thinks.

Donīt hate them because they are different :weep:

Better see the good side and learn to have fun, playing with them :bounce:
