| skywyze07-28-07, 10:58 AM | Or any other elf for that matter? I've seen a few pictures of drow with beards, and Elfquest elves grow beards, except they have to be like a hundred years old. So what's the official stance? |
| EvilVegan07-28-07, 11:10 AM | NO! |
| Asra07-28-07, 11:27 AM | Elves don't have body hair, at all. I think they have eyebrows though. |
| skywyze07-28-07, 11:31 AM | Is beard body hair? |
| CaoSlayer07-28-07, 11:33 AM | Beards and pointy ears looks awful together. Proof: http://parttimeotaku.files.wordpress.com/2006/06/vlcsnap-1056271.jpg |
| skywyze07-28-07, 11:34 AM | Ah, I actually found the answer to my own question: Elves have no facial or body hair. |
| penchant07-28-07, 11:37 AM | Mirror Spock. Traditionally elves never had beards, though half elves can. This comes from LotR and is continued specifically through Dragon Lance as it was mentioned several times in those novels. |
| Asra07-28-07, 11:37 AM | Lemme guess, thought a Drow with a goatee would look awesome? ;) |
| skywyze07-28-07, 11:38 AM | Lemme guess, thought a Drow with a goatee would look awesome? ;)Nope, but we're in an all-drow campaign set in the UD, and I've been watching 300 once too many times. ;) Edit: I suppose it could be seen as a last desperate attempt to steer away from the famous elven femininity. |
| Asra07-28-07, 11:44 AM | Many have tried to steer away from the Elves Femininity, thats how you got Kaorti! Your Drow could always wear a fake beard. Or if you want to be manly, cut out an eye and carry it on a string around your neck! Sure, the DM might impose a penalty, but the manliness would be worth it. |
| skywyze07-28-07, 11:53 AM | Seriously considering cutting out both eyes and taking Blind-fighting to compensate. Maybe get a Blindfold of True Darkness. Where're the Kaorti from? Btw, don't get me wrong - I think the sneaky, shadowy, deviously clever drow are cool. It's just that they're elves. And the people we're gaming with are... How to put this politely... Well, some of them are very, very eager to prove their straightness... Which of course only can mean one thing. But I digress. So yeah, where're the kaorti from? Edit: Or maybe have both eyes lost to an illithid were-bear in a wrestling match. *ponders* Edit-edit: Isn't there a half-drow somewhere? Maybe he could be half-drow, half bear or something. |
| Asra07-28-07, 12:02 PM | The Kaorti are from the fiend folio. They were a group of elves who were messing around with magical experiments, and wound up getting sucked up into the Far Realm, and turned manly/hideous. It turned them into Outsiders with some pretty great abilities, but they need to wear resin suits outside of their Kaorti Cysts to stay safe. You can do a search for them on Wizards, and you can find some adventures dealing with a Kaorti Ubercyst. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/ff_gallery/50125.jpg Theres their picture. Not very feminine at all. EDIT: Theres a half-drow somewhere. I think its in Races of Faerun. |
| skywyze07-28-07, 12:06 PM | Hmm... Which is worse... Monster from the Far Realms or a Drow who dances like a girl? I will need to ponder this and see if our DM even allows Kaorti. The general rule is that we all need to play Drow, but I'm not sure how strict she'll be on enforcing that rule. We'll see. |
| skywyze07-28-07, 12:10 PM | EDIT: Theres a half-drow somewhere. I think its in Races of Faerun.Oh yes, I see it now. They have the same stats as half-elves. Now I'm left with the dilemma of playing the weakest race in existance, or being a rouge-wearing ponce. *ponders some more* |
| Asra07-28-07, 12:12 PM | You could always play a Drow with a template, I suppose. Or perhaps buy an Aboleth or Illithid Graft. Then you can be a plant in Drow Society! Uwah hah hah? |
| Meep32607-28-07, 12:29 PM | If your DM allows it (huge LA, +5 ouch) you could use the Half-Ilithid Template from FF. Mmm... brains, if you don't want to take the LA hit, there's a feat chain in Complete Psionics that'll get you four tentacle attacks and let you eat teh brains. |
| The_Shaman07-28-07, 01:00 PM | IIRC, drow do not generally grow beards. However, one in, say, ten thousand might be able to get more than 5 hairs on their chin. IIRC the Drizzt series had one of the Menzoberanzan weaponmasters - an unusually big and hulking male - with a goatee or something. What was his name, though... He was not of the Baenre, might have been the del'Armgo weaponmaster, Uthegentel. It's like bearded women - they may not be common, but every now and then genes mess up a little. |
| EvilVegan07-28-07, 01:11 PM | A girdle of Masculinity on an elf male turns them into an orc. |
| key07-28-07, 01:27 PM | From Drow of the Underdark, "Some male drow (roughly one in ten) are capable of growing facial hair, and often wear elaborate mustaches and/or goatees." |
| Orchomenos07-28-07, 02:11 PM | You could be a Duergar merchant who somewhat befriend the rest of the all-drow party. Hard to be more manly than a duergar, even females are bald! |
| Asra07-28-07, 02:15 PM | Duergar women are far more manly than normal Dwarven men. Truly a manly race to be admired... |
| Radijs07-28-07, 03:22 PM | Lemme guess, thought a Drow with a goatee would look awesome? ;) Drow with ring-beards look awesome. |
| EvilVegan07-28-07, 04:08 PM | From Drow of the Underdark, "Some male drow (roughly one in ten) are capable of growing facial hair, and often wear elaborate mustaches and/or goatees." NO! NO! NO! |
| Asra07-28-07, 04:25 PM | I agree with EvilVegan. This is probably an error of WoTC, because we all know elves cannot have facial or body hair! I'm sure they'll errata this mistake and it will say something like, "Some male drow (roughly one in ten) are capable of never ever growing facial hair, no matter how much you want to break cannon by having a masculine looking elf." |
| Beowulf898907-29-07, 12:25 AM | I agree with EvilVegan. This is probably an error of WoTC, because we all know elves cannot have facial or body hair! I'm sure they'll errata this mistake and it will say something like, "Some male drow (roughly one in ten) are capable of never ever growing facial hair, no matter how much you want to break cannon by having a masculine looking elf." So... that means nine out of ten can grow beards? Awesome! Hmmm, all that's left is Drow tanks and explosive arrows. |
| zorgling2507-29-07, 12:34 AM | On a slightly unrelated note, is there any official PC stats for a Draegloth (half-drow/half-fiend)? I know I could use a half-fiend template on a drow, but thats boring... |
| Aloki07-29-07, 12:41 AM | Yes, they can. Only small ones though. In Forgotten Realms anyway... |
| ElberethSilverleaf07-29-07, 03:20 AM | NO |
| EvilVegan07-29-07, 08:26 AM | Yes, they can. Only small ones though. In Forgotten Realms anyway... Only Small Elves can grow beards? Are you perhaps referring to GNOMES?! |
| Mark_Aged07-29-07, 08:38 AM | I agree with EvilVegan. This is probably an error of WoTC, because we all know elves cannot have facial or body hair! I'm sure they'll errata this mistake and it will say something like, "Some male drow (roughly one in ten) are capable of never ever growing facial hair, no matter how much you want to break cannon by having a masculine looking elf." I'm guessing that there's an exception in the "elves can't have facial or body hair" rule for drow. |
| Khatoblepas07-29-07, 08:43 AM | From Drow of the Underdark, "Some male drow (roughly one in ten thousand) are capable of growing facial hair, and often are beaten to death with it by the female drow clerics, who weave it into the shape of a whip, flaying him with his own facial hair. Matriarchal society, remember? Manliness is weak!" Fixed. |
| Aloki07-29-07, 09:38 AM | I meant they can only grow small BEARDS For example http://www.scotttatman.com/images/scott_beard_headshot_small.jpg And what the gnomes have in the PHB This goes for ALL elves, and it is the same color as all their hair |
| Eikre07-29-07, 09:46 AM | Nice picture. He stares into my soul. ...Soul! |
| The_Shaman07-29-07, 02:47 PM | On a slightly unrelated note, is there any official PC stats for a Draegloth (half-drow/half-fiend)? I know I could use a half-fiend template on a drow, but thats boring... IIRC yes, check Champions of Ruin. |
| Phelix_the_Warrior07-29-07, 10:12 PM | There are two things I like that Blizzard did with their elves (more in Warcraft than in WoW) and thats A: The ears (i like them massive ears) B: Small ammounts of facial hair, not a lot, but small ammounts like a small beard or a goatee ect. My Drow Wizard, before he went insane at an arena killed 50 civilians and was subsequently shot to death by crossbowmen, had a white goatee, and since they are the international facial hair of evil, works great on Drow |
| dknight10007-29-07, 11:46 PM | From Drow of the Underdark, "Some male drow (roughly one in ten) are capable of growing facial hair, and often wear elaborate mustaches and/or goatees." For a moment, i thought it said "and others wear elaborate mustaches and/or goatees"... Perhaps my mind is stuck on how classic a drow wearing a fake beard to make him more manly would be. |
| key07-30-07, 12:46 AM | There are two things I like that Blizzard did with their elves (more in Warcraft than in WoW) and thats A: The ears (i like them massive ears) Do they all look like these? http://features.cgsociety.org/stories/2007_04/night_elf/banner01.jpg Those are borderline old man ears. I like thinner ones that jet straight out, parallel to the ground. http://www.shiroitsubasa.com/shiroitsubasa/deedlit_wall2.jpg |
| skywyze07-30-07, 09:42 AM | Man, that's hot. Big ears are full of win. They have similar ears in Elfquest too, though they don't stand out from the head as much, and without the crazy eyebrows. Here's one with a beard. Kind of the elf I was trying to make when I found out you can't have facial hair as an elf in D&D. http://www.temp.sfbok.se/kat/img/20038.jpg Edit: Found a better pic. |
| pukunui07-30-07, 04:56 PM | From Drow of the Underdark, "Some male drow (roughly one in ten) are capable of growing facial hair, and often wear elaborate mustaches and/or goatees." I agree with EvilVegan. This is probably an error of WoTC, because we all know elves cannot have facial or body hair! I'm sure they'll errata this mistake and it will say something like, "Some male drow (roughly one in ten) are capable of never ever growing facial hair, no matter how much you want to break cannon by having a masculine looking elf." It predates WotC actually. I was recently perusing my old 2e Complete Book of Elves (TSR) and all the male drow in that book are depicted sporting Fu Manchu style moustaches ... I'll see if I can find an example ... |
| Oggutho07-30-07, 05:19 PM | Would a drow with a goatee be even more evil? Would he be so evil that he flipped around the other side of the law/chaos/good/evil matrix and was actually lawful good? I also recall images of male drow in the 2nd edition wearing fu manchu moustaches. In the arms and equipment manual there's an image of two male drow with thick moustaches standing over the corpse of a beholder they killed. I also seem to recall some of the original artwork for The Dark Elf Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore had Zaknafein with the same style of moustache. Perhaps the strange radiation the Drow use to empower their weapons and armor with quasi-mystical abilities also allow them to grow wicked awesome beards. You would think all that radiation would make them a lot less fertile though. Although it's possible that when Vecna broke into Sigil and started rewriting the rules to the multiverse in order to make himself a overpower he took the time to retroactively remove all drow moustaches. Which was probably what gave the heroes enough time to stop him. |
| ADHadh07-30-07, 05:25 PM | A: The ears (i like them massive ears) And I say YUCK! They're not elves anymore, they're donkeys or rabbits! And massive eyebrows is many steps to far. I personally wouldn't allow facial hair on an elf in D&D, but I'm cool outside it. Fake beard? I've imagined a Drow trying to disguise himself as a Duergar. Would like to see it :D |
| Eerongal07-30-07, 05:38 PM | Personally, i think this is more of a setting issue, especially since the bit about elves not having facial hair is in the descriptive text and thusly now allowed in the SRD. Meaning that by the RULES there's no reason an elf can't have facial hair. By the generic D&D campaign setting, they CANNOT have facial hair. So in short, this is a 'consult your DM issue'. I personally think elves should be allowed to grow facial hair, however the society norm for them is to be clean-shaven. Also, there's certainly nothing game breaking about letting you have facial hair, obviously. Unless, of course, you can somehow talk your DM into it giving you some kind of bonus. that way you can be all 'hey guys! check out of +1 beard of manly-tude! it totally gives me an awesome bonus on beard checks!' Beard checks....hrm....I think i need to devise a new skill.... |
| Orchomenos07-30-07, 06:32 PM | I like thinner ones that jet straight out, parallel to the ground. http://www.shiroitsubasa.com/shiroitsubasa/deedlit_wall2.jpg This is how I see Fey's ears. Elves are humanoids, after all, they just happen to have pointed ears, no facial or body hair, and to be unable to use greatswords, period. :P |
| SunTzuWarmaster07-30-07, 06:46 PM | Sure an elf can use a greatsword. "Elf, bring me my Greatsword!" edit: oh, was that the wrong thread? |
| Fealin_SpiritSong08-03-07, 01:19 AM | I thought that one drow (Jarlaxle?) had a short goatee or something to that measure. He was bald though so I guess it would work....kinda. |
| Lotusblossom08-03-07, 01:32 AM | Drits' dad has a goatee. Drits later discovers that it's fake. Bob Salvatore pronounces Drizzt "Drits", so there! |
| wolf_man00708-03-07, 09:18 AM | Only Small Elves can grow beards? Are you perhaps referring to GNOMES?! High five! |
| Asra08-03-07, 12:05 PM | Well I for one think that the white goatees all those elves are sporting are just fungal growths! I say this because Drow eat mainly fungus, and perhaps they get some on their face, and just never notice. |
| RodinGates08-03-07, 12:36 PM | You know I recall in one session we ran our cleric of St Cuthbert picked up a ring from some felled gnolls and tried it on. It was a cursed ring of hair growth and caused him to grow a thick and bushy beard, which he had to shave everyday just so he could fit into his helmet. If you want drow with facial hair always consider the fact that they could simply be cursed in such a faction. Hell, if the player in question wants to play a renegade consider that as a motivation for marking them as such. Perhaps little wispy mustaches and goatees are believed to be "Lolths silk", a way of marking traitors. That's an option. |
