| gravitywell08-31-07, 07:45 AM | This question came up during my game last night, and for the life of us, I couldn't find reference in PHB or DMG or MM that stated that Half-elves receive the 4-hour trance that their full-blooded elven relatives get. The elven trance is listed under Physical description of the race listing, and is not listed under the half-elf. It's not listed, so it's not true? Half-elf states that they are Elf-blooded, so things pertaining to elves, pertain to them. Does this mean trancing as well? If anyone could reference something that confirms, or denies this, I would be very grateful. |
| SiuiS08-31-07, 07:49 AM | There is a team-work benefit that allows everyone who to trance for four hours instead of sleep. The team member requirement is concentration ranks, but the team leader requirement is elf or half-elf. I am assuming thast this means that, if the half-elf grew up with elves, or could learn it from them, then yes they can use the elven trance ability. If not, then no, although that is far from official. Makes sense, though. |
| Shadowfax708-31-07, 09:46 AM | I believe this was answered as Half-Elves sleep, not trance, in the FAQ or Sage Advice ?? |
| Jaxgaret08-31-07, 12:18 PM | While it does not say that they Trance in the physical description of Half-Elves in the PHB, Elves and Half-Elves share an Immunity to Sleep that suggests that they share a physiological dream state - the Trance. |
| gravitywell08-31-07, 03:05 PM | I believe this was answered as Half-Elves sleep, not trance, in the FAQ or Sage Advice ?? I checked in the FAQ and didn't find anything regarding trancing. I also tried to check the Sage Advice and there were only 10ish entries in the "archive" is the non-4th edition questions listed somewhere? |
| imakuni6708-31-07, 04:11 PM | We also just used that a half-elf can function on normal human level at 75% the sleeping time |

Elven Blood is useful only for Prestige Classes, racial weaponery, a bunch of spells and blood transfusions.Half elves sleep as everybody else, but they can wake up really fast, the inmunity to sleep spells is because they only can sleep when they want to. |

Or SFLHalf elves sleep as everybody else, but they can wake up really fast, the inmunity to sleep spells is because they only can sleep when they want to.You get this information from where? Actually, it doesn't matter. It's not CORE, so it's not true unless you use X supplement, and then only if you choose to. Not to mention is make little logical sense. |
| pigknight09-28-07, 11:21 PM | Just ask your DM. (S)He should just houserule it. |
| Johnny_Angel09-28-07, 11:57 PM | Well, since half-elves are human and elf, I'd say that they sleep like humans do, but only require 4 hours of sleep. I think that would be a good compromise. |
| Another Gnome09-30-07, 03:24 PM | PH p. 225, 257; dream/nightmare: "Creatures who don't sleep (such as elves but not half-elves) ..." |
| Shadowfax709-30-07, 04:19 PM | PH p. 225, 257; dream/nightmare: "Creatures who don't sleep (such as elves but not half-elves) ..."I had seen this before. That pretty much makes it clear. Nice catch Another Gnome. |
