| Marendithas_the_Necro03-20-07, 09:34 PM | from srd http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicRaces.htm#halfGiants Powerful Build: The physical stature of half-giants lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category larger. Whenever a half-giant is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the half-giant is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him. A half-giant is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. A half-giant can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category. I want to know if for example a half-giant or a goliath would be considered large for his carying load? Because if they can take large weapons that would be hard to have them if you have a normal strength. What do you think? |
| Crimson_Concerto03-20-07, 09:59 PM | Powerful Builds says exactly what it's used for, and carrying capacity isn't on the list, so no. Goliaths and Half-Giants already DO have above-average STR, so I don't see your justification even from a conceptual standpoint. |
| Spikes01k03-20-07, 11:28 PM | A great deal of people try to read something into Powerful Build that isn't there. Your not the first. |
| Cadwyn03-21-07, 07:23 AM | I know this will spark the usual discussion, but me And my DM both finds this line the most important in the feature "...the half-giant is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him." , and as such, In our games creatures with powerful build would get improved unarmed damage, carrying capability and all other size based things (exept size and reach, but Thats in the text) |

The text reads "Whenever a half-giant is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check ... the half-giant is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him." It's very clear that it means what it says. He's treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him, but only when he is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check. |
| Tectorman03-21-07, 08:38 AM | So what you do is ask your DM if you can rewrite the description of Powerful Build to explicitly and clearly say "Goliaths are also treated as being one size larger to determine their carrying loads". Then, after you "make up a new race:rolleye2:", the two of you need to decide whether the Goliath's LA goes up or not (personally, I don't think it would). I personally wouldn't do that; instead, I just advocate that creatures with Powerful Build should deal Large size natural and unarmed damage (dodges various paper balls thrown at him). "You can't do that!" "That's not in the rules!" "Yak!" "Yak! Yak!" So, in Races of the Wild, a Centaur's natural damage goes up when he increases his size according to the monster class level progression chart, and in Races of Stone, a Feral Gargun does the exact same thing (increase his natural damage when he gets Powerful Build), but no one else gets to? Show me another race with a monster class level progression with a natural attack with Powerful Build that doesn't increase the damage of his natural attack when he takes Powerful Build, and then we'll talk. Until then, anyone can infer that quality as being in Powerful Build, and not be wrong. Alternatively, they can just create a new race, identical in every way to the old race, but with whatever singular changes they wish to make. So there (sticks out tongue). |

Go ahead by all means. It is your game, and we have no right to dictate how it should be run.:) |
