| bob_the_great04-09-07, 10:43 AM | My search attempts could not find me any concrete answer. I was left with it being a judgement as to how you interpret: "+1 racial bonus on attack rolls with thrown weapons and slings" If you interpret "thrown weapons" to only be specific physical weapons like daggers and spears then it doesn't. If you interpret it as anything that you throw which deals damage then it does. If this is somewhere obvious, i am sorry I must have missed it. Thanks for any help on this. |

Spells are not thrown weapons, which is a game term. The spells which require an attack spell are touch spells and rays. Rays can be augmented by weapon focus (ray), which is specifically useful to Warlocks. |
| RobbyPants04-09-07, 11:24 AM | Yeah, I wouldn't apply the bonus to rays or the like. It does, however, work for throwing any enchanted projectiles (enchanted, perhaps with Magic Stone, Magic Weapon, or something similar). |
| bob_the_great04-09-07, 11:34 AM | Thanks for the responses. That was what I had guessed for rays. I meant to add this into the original post but forgot to add it. What about the orb spells, where you conjure the orb and then throw it? |

If your halfling spellcaster is willing to hold the Orb of Acid in his about-to-dissolve hands to physically throw it at his enemies... sure, I'll give him a +1 bonus to attack. :) |

All spells that do ranged attacks form their own special category of which rays are a sub-category. Ranged Spell Attacks (even orb spells) are not thrown weapons. If they were, you'd get your strength bonus to damage which you don't. -Polaris |

If you interpret it as anything that you throw which deals damage then it does. Or, if you interpret to mean anything that damages like a sword then it does. No, only thrown weapons out of the list of weapons. Doesn't include spells, rifles, swords, etc. |

| bob_the_great04-09-07, 01:27 PM | thank you guys. |
| penchant04-10-07, 12:04 AM | What about whirling blade? The spell specifies as if you were making melee attacks, however you are hurling the enchanted blade. (Yes, I know that by the RAW its no, but I'm talking about thematics) |

(Yes, I know that by the RAW its no, but I'm talking about thematics) If you want to houserule it, by all means do so. The boards [particularly this specific section of the boards] are generally best used to deal with RAW situations; otherwise, there is no basis for discussion. Perhaps your line of questioning might be better suited in the "D&D Rules, Campaign, and Character Advice" section, with the What's a DM to Do, House Rules, and Campaign Workshop boards. This section is called D&D Fundamentals, if you were wondering. |
| penchant04-10-07, 01:17 AM | right and we can't possibly move beyond the fundamentals in a section called fundamentals... right :sarcasm: |
| Jaxgaret04-10-07, 01:59 AM | right and we can't possibly move beyond the fundamentals in a section called fundamentals... right :sarcasm: We can, but my advice still stands. Posting in the correct section of the boards will garner you better results, if that matters to you. I would rule that the Halfling racial bonus does not apply to Whirling Blade, because the blade itself is making melee attacks, not ranged attacks. It is as if you were wielding the blade yourself, in melee. |
| YabaTheWhat04-10-07, 09:36 AM | There are a couple spells that create thrown effects (stated in their description, as with Produce Flame), and others that enchant projectiles or create enchanted projectiles (in this case only sling bullets apply). Grenade-like weapons, such as flasks of acid, are also thrown. Anything that is thrown (the word "thrown" must be used in the item/spell description or in the description for that type of item) or shot from a sling will benefit from the halfling's bonus. As already stated by others, rays and arrows are not thrown. Ranged touch attacks are not thrown, merely targeted or aimed. Thus they do not get the halfling thrown weapon bonus. |
| Jaxgaret04-10-07, 02:19 PM | Thanks Yaba. What he said. |
