I'm building a dragon shaman for fun at lvl 20 and not worrying about lvl adj. I'm wanting a half dragon just needing a base race. they're three choices I'm looking at; aasirmar celestial half dragon (silver, gold); hound archon half dragon(bronze); or an Orge Mage half dragon (blue, green,or red)

I'd actually go dragon born of bahamut (races of the dragon) instead of half dragon. Sure half dragons got the nice ability scores but it only gets its breath weapon once a day, ick! You go dragon born with the heart aspect you can breathe it once every d4 rounds, and then you can also breathe your dragon shaman breathe once every d4 rounds. Good base race? Anything with a high con, but make sure it doesn't have many racial abilities that are useful cuz you lose most of them.

I personally like neanderthal (frostburn) dragon born, net a +4 con with no LA which isn't bad and you don't really lose anything to great from neanderthals.

if you do not have frost burn, go with dwarves,

ack ow my heart! No! You lose so many of the dwarves abilities, especially the normal move speed in medium/heavy armor and the save bonuses thats just to much of a hit. And if you wanna take the most advantage out of the healing touch class feature dwarves aren't the best idea.

in real play, dwarves aren't a bad idea for a Dragon Shaman.

but if you have a bias against dwarves or something, i would say Goliath. its in Races of Stone.

random thought....why not be a dragon wyrmling or something. a White dragon Wyrmling is like ECL 4 or something. you can play a white dragon wyrmling with only a +2 LA. if your not worried about LA then go young or juvinile, why not?

Half-Dragon is very cool, but the Template duplicates many of the DS class abilities.

How about Dragonkin?

Hmm, half-dragons with the RoD feat that allows them to breath every 1d4 rounds can duplicate one of the main features of the DS; the question is do the two coexist - I mean do you get two separate counters for your cute li'l breath weapon.

Otherwise, gold dwarves (so you don't miss on the charisma) can imo be quite powerful dragon shamans. I wonder about gnomes - do any class abilities of significant importance depend on size?

We have a wood elf dragonborn Ranger 1/Dragon Shaman in our party, he works out quite nice.

I always thought that Poison Dusk Lizardfolk would be good. You get a bonus to the already good NA and then you don't need armor, so your chameleon ability works for you.

The draconic template works well with a dragon shaman.

if you are considering creatures with ECL's as high as Orge Mage then im assuming your DM isnt holding LA or Racial Hit Dice against you.

a would suggest Dragonborn Anthromorphic Baleen Whale with the Mind ability selected. Your Anthromorphic part loses the Darkvision and Blindsight, but you will eventually get Blindsense and Darkvision back anyway from the Mind Ability.
The Dragon Shaman class gives you a breath weapon and wings so the other Dragonborn abilities arent all that great in comparison. The Baleen whale gives great stat mods (+8 Str, +4 Dex, +4 Con, +4 Wis) and a +9 natural armor to boot you also gain a tailslap from the whale as well as a swim speed, combine all this and the fact that its only 2 Racial Hit Dice and NO Level Adjustment, makes it the wise mans choice. Did I mention your LARGE! Now go buy yourself a Long Spear and get to poking people, or take Exotic Weapon Prof Spiked Chain.

The problem with the baleen whale is the fact that it cannot survive on land. You'll notice it has no land speed. Depending on how "out there" you can go, a howler might not be a bad idea. You won't be able to manipulate objects without a feat, but a +10 STR, +6 DEX, + 4 CON, -4 INT, +4 WIS, and -2 CHA could be pretty useful, especially with the +5 NA. Along the same lines come Blink Dog, and Krenshar. Some of the Slaad's might be useful as well.

They can survive on land, last I checked whales were air breathing mammals.... Yep yep thats right. They just couldn't move under their own power, but if he gets wings from dragon shaman he could just fly around everywhere. Lol thats a terribly hilarious sight, dragonshaman dragonborn whale flying around breathing fire on you.

But the anthropomorphic whale has a landspeed of 30 ft anyhow.

Wow, an anthro baleen whale/bronze shaman could be one heck of a character for an aquatic campaign though... Imagine the fights with the anthropomorphic shark white dragon shaman pirates :)

Anyway, would a half-giant work as a dragon shaman for gem dragons? I heard they had psionics, so a psionic race could fit them quite well.

What does everyone think would be the best LA+0 3.5 Greyhawk race for a Dragon Shaman with a 36 point buy (DMG pg 169)? The only Greyhawk material not allowed would be MM2 or anything from the Dungeon/Dragon magazines.

Human. You want high CON & CHA (and since you are a back up warrior, you can not be small), so no other race- except half-elves- will do.

What about a small race? A gnome, in particular, because of the +2 con, should be a devilishly dangeroud draconian :)

Yeah but the -2 Str is gonna hurt a melee character like the Dragon Shaman. It's still doable but it's costly ability wise on a point buy.

another vote for the Dragonborn neanderthal. i really like that idea ;)

Why'd you have to get into melee? You can play support, snipe, etc... and with the recharge breath you're breathing every 1d3 rounds.

Anyway, I guess it can be a pain if you're going into melee. Hmm, I wonder if there's a small race that can make a good dragon shaman. Hehe, maybe pseudodragon? "Everyone knows the little blighters can't... AARGH, MY FACE!"

On a related note: What does everyone think of an Orc Dragonborn of Bahamut for a Dragon Shaman? I know the -2 to charisma hurts but the Orc lends itself very well to being Dragonborn from a mechanical standpoint. You keep the best part of being an Orc (strength) and drop darkvision and light sensitivity and can easily just reacquire darkvision and add some other nifty sensory stuff.

Not only that, but small weapons do less damage.
