when creating a dragonborn character, do u choose a base creature from before the rebirth? if so, what does this effect?

Yes, you choose a base creature. Not only is it important to your backstory (unlike an elan, you keep all of your old memories), but it also affects your abilities. You keep your old subtypes (so a former elf is still affected by elf-bane weapons), ability score adjustments, movement forms, speed, and (if you have it) the powerful build feature.

ok cool. and i know this is the race forum but quick question. would anyone reccomend it for a monk? are there any size limitations to the base creature or does it all just change back to medium?

For a monk? There are worse. The hit to dexterity is kinda not too good, but the other abilities are quite decent - and constitution is always nice. Also, I don't think you have to be medium... I mean halflings and gnomes don't get any bigger if they become dragonborn, so probably larger races don't change either.

If you want to go for extreme cheese, a Dragonborn Buomman (planar handbook pg. 8) makes a fun monk. A buomman who becomes a dragonborn RAW loses his vow of silence, which the major downside of being a buomman. The stats of a buomman monk would be +2 wis +2 con -2 cha -2 dex.

Another good choice for a monk would be a dragonborn wood elf (monster manual, page 104). A dragonborn wood elf's stats would be +2 str -2 int.

A raptoran dragonborn from races of destiny is cool because you keep your flying abilities of a raptoran.

Dragonborn Mongrelfolk (also from races of destiny) are also fun because they have a +6 bonus to con (although a -2 dex -2 int -4 cha might be too painful for your character).

that's all the advice I got. Hope it's helpful! :)

would you happen to know where the PC type of stats would be because in that it just has the stats for a monster encounter

PCs are usually statted with an elite array iirc - 15,14,13,12,10,8 before adjustments.

alright nice. i decided on lizardfolk though because it kinda goes along with a dragon and the natural armor is a plus.

but lizardfolk have LA!!! (That's terrible for a PC.... Especially for a monk!!!)
The_Shaman

01-24-08, 07:29 AM
Nah, the LA is the smaller problem - for example, githzerai make great monk and have LA +2. The lizzies, however, have 2 atrocious racial HD, that's their big problem. OTOH, natural attacks (Amulet of Mighty fists might almost be worth its price) and racial NA are almost bearable... If only you could have your first level be a monk one so you aren't stuck with the lizzies idiotic starting skill selection.

no im just saying i have no clue really how to account for racial HD and stuff. i need to hire a secretary to do all that crap for me haha

I think it's not so hard, just treat them the same way as class levels - they boost your HP, saves, and BAB. Then just add the class levels on top as if you multiclassed. Do not give 4x skill points for the first class level - as they already had levels, of a sort.

In a way, a lizardman fighter 1 is kinda like a multiclass character - he has 2 levels of lizardman (racial HD) and then he took a level of fighter.

Well in a sense, HD is really like more LA...
HD+LA+Class levels = Effective Class Level

HD, like LA, makes you need more xp to level up.

1 LA + 2 HD means that you'll always be 3 levels behind the rest of the party (which sucks!).

In return for taking this giant hit to your level, you get very little in return.

I seriously hope you rethink your racial choice.

i probably am haha. well you helped right that encyclopedia of +0 LA creatures, so what would u say is the best for monks?

Ok, ok. The elite array is an option, btw, and still used by some DMs - besides, it's equal to 25-point PB anyway.
