| barronazrael04-28-07, 04:21 PM | This thought just came to mind for me just now and we all have one but I would like to know what your favorite kind of dragon is(yes,Tiamat,Bahumat, and Io count). is there a specific color? One from a movie or litteray source? Or perhaps a certin kind of personality reason. Please tell.:D P.S. For me it's a tie between silver & red. |
| crazy_monkey195604-28-07, 06:22 PM | Crystal Dragons, although all the psionics dragons rank up there for me. I think, given that it was a book for the Dungeons & Dragons game that the Expanded Psionics Handbook should have had the gem dragons in it, updated for 3.5. :twitch: Quentin |
| JolanthusTrel04-28-07, 07:17 PM | Personally I like Gold dragons. But Silvers and Reds are a close second&third. but thatsbecause I use Gold Dragons as rulers and advisers of my countries. |
| Maraxus04-28-07, 08:03 PM | Copper! Hurray for Chaotic good tricksers |
| SD04-28-07, 08:27 PM | I think, given that it was a book for the Dungeons & Dragons game that the Expanded Psionics Handbook should have had the gem dragons in it, updated for 3.5. :twitch:Funny, I had the exact opposite complaint during the ridiculous and worthless Year of the Dragons. Dungeons are important enough that dragons had to settle for second billing, but I had to wait until February to get a book on them? Also, since this is the Races forum and not the Monsters forum, I gotta go with my favorite dragon as a PC instead of as a creature. And that's white, because nobody expects a PC to opt to be modeled after the weakest dragon in the game, even if there's no difference among the dragons types for half-dragon / draconic / dragon shaman / etc. power levels. |
| Keaerin04-28-07, 09:37 PM | Copper! Hurray for Chaotic good tricksers Yep copper dragons are the best hands down. I play one in a campaign and its been my most beloved character ever. (play a copper wyrmling in a party and watch the fireworks that you create its great) |
| Zicka04-28-07, 10:11 PM | no, Silver is best:D |
| Spikes01k04-28-07, 10:32 PM | I always like a good melee so I am really for Fang Dragons! C/N be good toward your kind and friends, be evil toward your enemies! |
| runestar04-28-07, 11:00 PM | Song dragons...:D |
| ZerianTheKeeper04-28-07, 11:13 PM | What no love for the BLUE dragon, Just look at the maw on that one. Its my favorite, with silver a close second. |
| Westbound04-28-07, 11:58 PM | The deadliest dragon that I know of, the one I've killed more PCs with of varying levels....is the White Dragon. Most PCs, particularly if they've read the Monster Manual or the Draconomicon, completely underestimate this wonder monster. Most of the time, they're killed and they don't even know what's hit them. I don't know if there's any more specific charts that point out the likelihood of certain dragons talking with you like 1E and 2E did, but the White Dragon had the lowest chance, I think 10% off the top of my head. That means this thing has no interest in why you're invading his domain. It has no curiosity with you, and it's not going to be reasoned with (for the most part). Though the White Dragon may be the least intelligent of the major dragons, it's not stupid. My White Dragons run around in packs, and together they're more dangerous than most red dragons. Imagine a pack of velociraptors, now imagine them about 10 times bigger, winged, white as snow, and with that nasty frost breath. Reputation helps to protect the reds, the golds, and other dragons from hostile predators, but the White Dragon's underestimated nature puts it at continual odds with their natural enemies like Frost Giants, Yeti and Ice Trolls, not to mention Frost Worms and Remorhaz. This makes the White Dragon particularly deadly because they must fight constantly to maintain their territory. It's the cold environments that make them so deadly. Cold is a tougher environment to survive in than a hot desert. Though you may have more access to water in a cold climate, you're fighting to stay warm and dry. Cold, snowy mountains and artic lands are the White Dragon's playground. Most of my kills from White Dragons often involve PCs who were utterly unprepared for cold conditions. My favorite tactic for White Dragons is to simply set off an avalanche upon the PCs, then dig the PCs out and eat them. No fuss, no muss. |
| runestar04-29-07, 12:16 AM | This reminds me - the steel dragon appears statically superior to the while dragon in every way, yet it is only a paltry cr18 at great wyrm status. Is there something wrong with the entry? Two dragon ages get the same cr rating... |
| Sphere04-29-07, 12:38 AM | The deadliest dragon that I know of, the one I've killed more PCs with of varying levels....is the White Dragon. You know, it always seemed silly to me that white dragons lived in the cold. Granted they have the cold subtype, but they live in the colder parts of the world where most things are immune, resistant, or equipped to handle cold-based attacks, like their breath weapon. That would put white dragons at a severe disadvantage compared to the other dragons, who live near environments where the local wildlife are more susceptible to their attacks. For my favorite type of dragon I would have to say green, the other lawful evil true dragon. Stalking adventurers from the tree-tops or in the rivers for hit and run tactics. Using acid breath to turn their targets into puddles of goo. Dominating the wills of men and plants alike for their plans. My favorite thing about them is they make their homes right in the "backyard" of most characters, making it easier to attack rather than be hunted down. |
| Izzak04-29-07, 12:43 AM | Bronze takes it away. land, air, and sea. Got it all covered |
| runestar04-29-07, 02:31 AM | Well, it sure wouldn't make sense for white dragons to stay in volcanoes...;) Unless, of course, it was a red dragon with a skin pigment condition which made it albino...:P |

With their breath weapon at something of a disadvantage in an area where a lot of their enemies have a resistance to such an attack might make the White Dragon even more dangerous. They'll end up developing tactics to use against specific enemies, or they'll either die or become enslaved. But against PCs, that frost blast (which I rarely ever use against PCs) usually encounters no resistance. |
| bloodtalon04-29-07, 08:28 PM | this is from a dm's point of view silver dragons""""" easy way to help stear the party along a given path blue dragon more like a army general with roops to comand |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi04-29-07, 08:51 PM | Yep copper dragons are the best hands down. I play one in a campaign and its been my most beloved character ever. (play a copper wyrmling in a party and watch the fireworks that you create its great) So it's like playing a kender (kender wild mage = living rod of wonder). I'll agree coppers are very fun. I also like bronze. LG, but totally capable of enjoying fun. Especially playing with the dolphins. Yup, love 'em. Gem dragons are neat as well, and rust dragons have some potential. |
| diphycue04-30-07, 01:42 AM | I like Pyroclastic for sheer kaboom factor. Howling dragons are neat if you like some insanity. As attitude goes, you can't beat Reds (Smaug anyone?). Otherwise, for playability and half-dragons I prefer Black dragons. Half black dragon lizardfolk are really fun. Though, one story that I read about a Wight Dragon really appealled to me...a DM fools his characters into thinking they're going to be facing a White Dragon... but it's really a Red dragon that's been turned into a wight...so a Wight Dragon...hehe. |
| barronazrael04-30-07, 03:34 AM | I agree with the idea that White dragons probbiley have certin hunting instincts aganst all of those creatures cold immunities. Non the less, they're still dragons of the original five colors. I would aslo like to piont out that if I remember right, steel dragons aren't considered true dragons, only dragon kind. I once had fun playing as a blue dragon I would also like to see maybe 3-5 more dragon gods outside of the big three(Tiamat,Bahumat, and Io). All I know about Io is that he created Bahumat and Tiamat, then created the ilse of Io from drops of his own blood(or that's how I remember it at least). Does anyone else know any more about him? Smuag:Well theif,i can smell you, hear you're breath, feel you're body heat, take what you want there's enough to go around. |
| Izzak04-30-07, 09:12 PM | Yeah Smaug, what a wonderful example of a dragon. The one I always think of when a dragon is mentioned. One question however. I saw him as a pretty darn arrogant(?) dragon , and my freinds and I had a discussion about whether or not dragons would benefit from armor. Plates and what not. Smaug thought he was a badass and then bam one scale, oops im dead. This came about when my freinds brother claimed Eragon was superoir to our good ol' Smaug, and then the movie hit so yeah. We came to the conslusion that only in extreme cases would dragons wear armor such as Smaug. So the question remains. Why or Would a dragon don mundane forms(plate mail, chain what not) if the dragon knows its hide is much stronger than most materials. Sorry to take this thread in this direction :allalone: |
| Kraven_Redcloak04-30-07, 10:55 PM | Dragon's very seldom wear or carry anything that is normal or mundane, normally if a dragon is forced to wear any sort of barding it is usually heavily enchanted to give them better protection and manueverability so that doesn't interfere with their flying. Most of the time that dragons would wear armor would be more for the sake of a human cohort then themselves, since dragon mounts are so popular wearing armor could be another means of securing the rider to the dragon as was the case in Eragon where it was really nothing more then a protective saddle. Mind you dragon's like this are usually metallic (usually bronze) involved with either a relatively wealthy PC or some kind of military group since they are more prone to join up with humanoids. Some armor actually aguments their natural abilities like it would a normal PC, mount, or animal companion. Most of the time though dragons that wear armor are usually young and their armor class isn't that high yet. So basically a dragon wearing armor is usually only doing so out of necessity. |
| Geregald04-30-07, 11:02 PM | Purple Dragon (Dragon Compendium) is by far and away my favorite for a few reasons. 1) Force Breath. I don't feel a need to say more, but for dramatic effect, Blink & other forms of Ethereal or Incorporealness no longer matter. It's Force damage, baby. 2) 3 Shaping options with no Feats - That's just how the Purple Dragon breath is. 3) Applications for Half-Dragon characters. 'Nuff said. I actually made a Half-Purple-Dragon Spellscale Bard once using the rules for "adopted race template" (to avoid a portion of the ECL) under an experienced DM and it was funny as hell. Not only were other PC's (both in and out of character) confused as hell by what I was, but it was just fun to emulate a Soul Knife with my breath weapon every 1d4 rounds (due to a Draconic feat) and further confuse the party. Purple is one of the "Lost" Chromatic Dragons, along with Orange and Yellow, presented in Dragon Compendium. While this is technically OGL, if it was initially featured in Dragon Magazine I tend to count it as "official" while adhering to WotC's "Newest Rules Trump All" philosopy. -Geregald |
| Serge_P05-01-07, 10:47 AM | Pyroclastic dragons. |
| nightwyrm05-01-07, 01:13 PM | Dragonwrought Kobold - one of the few "dragons" you can actually play in a normal game Blacks - awesome looking horns Silver - coz they so friendly and pretty |
| vegetalss405-01-07, 01:27 PM | slivers great. reds is almost as great. BUT the BEST of all dragons is.... the half-red half silver dragon. best from two worlds dragons are the supreme creatures go us!!! :dragon: :dragon: :dragon: :dragon: :dragon: :dragon: :dragon: |
| ZiggZagg05-01-07, 01:32 PM | Red Dragons, just for their destructive and arrogant nature, and the fact that they are so damn powerful, not to mention they look awesome Blue Dragons look cool as well, and are the second strongest chromatic. These two dragons, you set up a great wyrm of each, and you have a new world order. The militaristic cunning of a Blue with the awesome power of a Red...bow to the Counsel of Wyrms! |
| Longstrider2305-01-07, 05:31 PM | I'd have to say that for me, it's a three way tie inbetween the Battle, Silver and Blue dragons. (P.S. The Battle Dragon is found in the Draconomicon) |
| Draginja05-01-07, 09:15 PM | Red and Silver can't cross-breed. Read the "Ask Shadow the Dragon" thread to find out why. My personal favorites are Blacks and Brass. My Sargeant prefers Fangs, but he's in the Army, so he likes combat creatures. |
| Grizzled Gryphon05-01-07, 10:42 PM | None of the current Dragons really spark my interest, to be honest. At least, not enough for any given one to be my 'favorite'. However, in second edition, my favorite was the Mercury Dragon. Followed by the Shadow Dragon. I liked the Mercury dragon because it had the coolest "breath weapon" ever. It didn't breathe anything, it focused light with its wings on to the target. Effectively, a giant concave mirror. And, they were fast. Small, lithe, fast dragons that could cook you with any light source. Nice. The Shadow was cool as it was very, and I mean VERY, hard to beat. Lets see, it was invisible in shadow, and could create dancing shadows at will. Then, when it breathed on you, at best, you lost 1/4 of your levels. Yikes, that was tough. Say, does anyone know if the Mercury Dragon has been done for 3.5? |

Out of the three, the Purple is easily my favorite. (though, the orange is cool too) My faves: Purple Pyroclastic Green All Gems |
| D-Dus05-02-07, 04:25 AM | Flavourwise, my favorite is definetely the Shadow Dragon (Draconomicon) The Red is a close second. |
| obrysii05-02-07, 09:06 AM | The Pyroclastic Dragon. Why? Disinigration breath weapon + heighten breath = nearly unsaveable save DCs |
| atomisk945505-03-07, 12:43 AM | brass! |
| barronazrael05-03-07, 02:35 PM | We all know that they're the original dragons, red, black, white, green and blue. the metallic brass, copper, gold, bronze and silver. the gem dragons(I don't remember the types for they are new to me). Also many others that vairying in type. But there are two I think are missing... thats right, two metals are missing Iron and TITIANIUM! |
| EvilPheemy05-03-07, 02:52 PM | Blues have long been my favorite. Yet that doesn't take anything away from the other types. Of course Smaug was arrogant, he was around for thousands of years, and had waded through battle for most of them. The only serious injuries he sustained were against other dragons. Indeed it took a called shot from a legendary hero (Bard) using a legendary weapon (the Black Arrow of his Fathers) aiming specifically for the spot he was directed to fire at (which was unknown even to Smaug himself). Heck, if I was Smaug I'd be a little haughty myself. |
| vegetalss405-03-07, 03:26 PM | Red and Silver can't cross-breed. Read the "Ask Shadow the Dragon" thread to find out why. that is a quite stupid thing to say to a half red half silver dragon. do you to tell the ghost that it cant exist? besides they can, they just dont do it knowingly |
| j3st3r05-03-07, 04:12 PM | My favourite dragon is the turbonium dragon :D |
| Shiikeras05-03-07, 04:23 PM | I like silver dragons because the look cool. And they smell nice. Also, they are the good version of white dragons. I also like white dragons. The MM acts like they're retarded, but they're smart. It's like a human or elf or whatever brain in a dragon's body, which is sweet. Also, they (due to being small, as said before but in much more detail) are incredibly savage and instinct-cunning due to being smaller and weaker. As for their breath weapon, I do agree that it's not fair that white dragons are the only ones that have to live in a climate that is bad for them. I think that they should be allowed to live in wilderness and mountains, too. As long as there's a winter there, of course. |
| The Equalizer05-03-07, 09:03 PM | I've always been a fan of the idealistic red dragon, though when I first started playing DND, I was a little dissapointed that all reds were CE. Still, they are my favorites, despite their evilness. Blue Dragons are also awesome, I see this guys a fascists from hell. Diplomatic, won't fry your ass if you have good reason to be doing what your doing so long as it is within the law. Unlike the red, who fries your ass just to do it. Anyway, it is always cool to play an NPC blue dragon, just flying through the desert. Plus, these guys just look cool. |
| Spikes01k05-04-07, 07:16 AM | A question please, could a Fang Dragon and a Shadow Dragon Cross Breed? |
| Draginja05-04-07, 11:12 AM | Cross-breeding of Dragons is possible, just not do-able. There are certain repercussions to attempting to do so. However, if you don't mind the constant hassle from draconic gods, it can be fun. A nice way to get around this is Half-Dragons. One parent was a Half-White, the other was a Half-Red. Now you have a Half-Pink Dragon. |
| monai7505-04-07, 02:36 PM | BLACK DRAGONS! just look really evil and are one of my favorite. But let us not forget the Shadow dragons. With that negative level breath weapon all must be careful. So for the evil side I like the dark scaled dragons. But on the good side I will have to go with the Bronze dragons and the copper dragons a close second. |
| Forgember05-04-07, 02:57 PM | Green Dragons back when they where still NE, not sure why they changed their alinment anyway. Also only Dragons from Krynn, I'll take looks over POWER any day. |
