| luchexx06-21-07, 10:37 AM | Does anybody knows what happens when a 15th level Drow Monk (Mnk13) gains Diamond Soul? Does Spell Resistance granted by Diamond Soul stacks with SR for being a Monk? Help!!   |
| obrysii06-21-07, 10:39 AM | Use whatever is best for the situation. Either the Monk's or the Drow's SR. |
| Kurama Youko06-21-07, 10:47 AM | What might be a good idea is forcing spellcasters to try and beat both SR's Seperately. |
| Bukowski06-21-07, 10:54 AM | A drow mon13 has SR of 24 as a racial special ability. Diamond Soul gives the monk no new benefit; spell resistance does not stack, it overlaps. If there was some effect that negated the character's racial abilities without affecting his class abilities, his Diamond Soul would still give him SR 23 in this situation. |
| RobbyPants06-21-07, 01:27 PM | Use whatever is best for the situation. Either the Monk's or the Drow's SR. Yep. They overlap, not stack. This is one of several reasons why a drow monk just isn't a good idea. Overlapping SR. Con penalty hurts d8 hit dice. Int and Cha bonuses don't really help a class that needs Str, Dex, Con, and Wis. LA +2 slows down the progression. Everyone knows that all drow are chaotic good rangers rebelling against their evil parent's generation. :P |
| The_Shaman06-21-07, 05:35 PM | A good reason to multiclass the monk (or go for PrCs) and get a feat allowing you to use int for your monk abilities (carmendine monk, kung fu genius, etc). |
| Treymordin06-21-07, 06:21 PM | They overlap and do not stack. |
| Nat_2006-21-07, 10:45 PM | go with the higher of the two... |
| ericSHINRA06-21-07, 11:41 PM | Everyone knows that all drow are chaotic good rangers rebelling against their evil parent's generation. :P Ever since they became a Player Race and of course, the Scimitars come standard. ;) |
| Templar_Prime06-21-07, 11:56 PM | My group tends to give base SR a boost from earned. In this case, since the drow is x+CL and monk is y+Class, we usually just give the drow SR a bonus of y (or the base number for the monk's). |
| Kurama Youko06-25-07, 09:04 AM | looking at all the other suggestion, i'd still check spells against both sources seperately. It doesn't make sense to pretend that either or the other doesnt exist. |
| Bukowski06-25-07, 09:45 AM | They're not all suggestions. The actual core rule is that they overlap and not stack. If you want to apply SR twice or give a bonus to Diamond Soul's SR for drow then it's a houserule. |
| Kurama Youko06-25-07, 09:37 PM | Actually the definition of overlap even by the rules as written. Two effects that offer the same bonus to not stack they do however overlap, if one is limited by duration for example then when it wears off the other will take its place. To a more reasonable degree so would a protective ward. If you had a ring of spell turning, and had the actually spell turning spell up, when the spell itself used up all its spell levels the ring would then kick in. Spell Resistance would work no different. Both forms are Spell Resistance still exist. One comes before the other, it would only matter which one you're DM decides to check against first. Saying that you only check against one is actual more of a house rule since its not supported in any rule book. |

If you have two sources of natural armor (for example), you take the highest one (unless specifically told otherwise such as the barkskin spell). The same applies to SR since that is essentially "AC" for spells. Your Monk level gives you an "AC" of 23 against spells and your Drow Racial Ability gives you an "AC" of 24 against spells. Overlapping means you only check for one.....the best one. As already said, it's one of many reasons why Drow suck as monks. -Polaris |
| obrysii06-26-07, 08:49 AM | Note, also, that this applies for damage reduction as well ... although in that case you simply take the better of the two for the situation. So if you have DR 15/magic and DR 5/bludgeoning ... against a bludgeoning weapon that isn't magical you have DR 15, and against a magical non-bludgeoning weapon you have DR 5. |
| RobbyPants06-26-07, 09:50 AM | Yeah, the only way in that overlapping would apply to SR is if one could "wear out" or would stop working after a set duration. Using both SRs seperately would be like having two seperate temporary HP totals. It's understood that if you have 10 temp HP and gain 15 temp HP, you have 15, and not 25. But if you take 20 damage, you don't subtract 15 from one total, and 5 from the other. You just use the highest total. The same goes for SR. |
| Borne Of Hate06-26-07, 10:44 AM | I just have my PCs roll twice and I am happy with that. We all game a different way and it is really up to the DM to decide. SOOOOOoooo.... Ask your Dm. |
| Steely_Dan06-26-07, 10:47 AM | I've seen a Dex based, Weapon Finesse, Stunning Fist, Spring Attacking drow monk that ganked some serious booty. ...Wow, if I said that at a dinner party I would definitely get some strange looks… |

If he seems to be a bit conservative, consider using a variant. The only one that I have seen is from Manual of the Planes; it gives you SR 15+HD but only against chaotic spells and spell-likes. Since you have some SR vs everything else, I guess it is still a plus. |
