| Joe Pacelli03-07-08, 01:31 PM | Ok, I have a friend who's going to join my campaign. Current PC's just hit 5th level so it's not fair to bring him at 5th, so I told him 4th. We've been going over race's and he's looking at playing a Binder from "Tome of Magic" so he wants something that gives him Charisma bonus. The Drow does this but is a Level Adjustment +2, which means his character would only be 2nd level, 4th with LA. While the pluses from Drow class make the LA right the level difference of 2nd to 5th is large now. So I was thinging of letting him be level 3rd and making the Drow only a LA +1. What wouls you remove from the Drow race to make it LA +1? Joe |
| cjhobbitbane03-07-08, 01:41 PM | you could drop the SLAs and Darkvision, just give it appropriate backstory to do so. |
| M-bark03-07-08, 01:42 PM | Instead of removing something from the Drow to make it LA+1 (as it might be hard to do), you could use the LA buyoff rules of Unearthed Arcana (found in the SRD). He will be able to start buying off his LA at level 6, and fully buy it off by the time he hits 9th level. |
| Shadowhowler03-07-08, 01:47 PM | Also, there are other options for races with a Cha bump. If he really just wants to be a Dark Elf... so be it. However, if he is flexable in character design and is just looking for something with a Cha bump, you might direct him to another race. |
| Damned slayer03-07-08, 02:12 PM | Remove SR and make it +1 |
| dndfencer03-07-08, 03:15 PM | i'd be hesitant to take off LA from the drow because once you get to around level 10 that +2 LA isn't so bad, especially because the drow will have SR (which is hard to get) and +2 int and +2 cha, which is also hard to get (aside from magic items). Until he gets to around level 10 he'll be weaker than the rest of the party but once he gets there it'll kick ass for him (so if you're planning on playing for a long time make him pay the price). |
| Rebel728403-07-08, 03:22 PM | Play an aasimar? +2 Wis, +2 Cha, minor resistances, +1 LA. LA buyoff is also a good idea. The character lags behind for a while but can EVENTUALLY catch up to the rest of the party. Other options: check the races compendium thread for I think some gensei and elves that have +2 cha with 0 LA. |
| jradd77703-07-08, 06:20 PM | Use Lesser Drow from FR (PGtF, pg. 191) as you starting point, trade the + 2 Dex for +2 Cha (switch some other stuff up, too, I disagree with the DMG saying that CON and CHA could be counterbalance each other)... they've already adjusted it to supposedly be LA 0... so why not? |
| ciaran03-07-08, 07:22 PM | If you let him start at 5th level, with the LA +2 he'd only have 3 HD. Its his "fun"eral. |
| Siko-tiko03-07-08, 07:26 PM | You can also try playing something different then a drow. Then you will not have the problem of level adjustment. :D Hope that help's with your problem. :) |
| Krusk03-07-08, 08:10 PM | You could devise a savage progression from savage species for the drow. Actually i think one already exists in drow of the underdark if you have access. |
| Drackthor03-07-08, 09:34 PM | Another vote for Aasimar. +1 LA, +2 Wis +2 Cha, and slightly less overplayed then Drow. |
| StruckingFuggle03-07-08, 09:43 PM | Current PC's just hit 5th level so it's not fair to bring him at 5th, so I told him 4th. ... What's not? |
| Shadowfax703-07-08, 11:21 PM | Current PC's just hit 5th level so it's not fair to bring him at 5th, so I told him 4th. Bring him in as a 3rd level Drow with full abilities and +2 LA. It will be more than fair, if anything it will be less fair to that player as he will still be underpowered against an EL 5. However, depending on the encounters, SR might save his life. |
| ciaran03-08-08, 02:12 AM | That SR chance, eh? Lets hear it for one more egg in the basket. Low levels! this is when these LA races earn their keep! If he/she can survive then he/she deserves whatever bonuses may come. As for Aasimar... In my group's campaigns, these guys have a habit of dying. I don't get it. Not a single one has lived throughout. Not a single one has survived too long even. The RP is good (I like heroes) and not even are the DMs picking on them. Its a curse. Only explanation. |
| betrayor03-08-08, 07:39 AM | There are races with LA 0 and a bonus to Cha.Two that come to mind is Lesser Aasimar with +2 Cha and +2 Wis From PGTF and Spellscale with +2 Cha -2 Con From Races of the dragon. |
| Ecalsneerg03-08-08, 09:58 AM | Try the Drow savage progression (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a) |
| BugHunter03-08-08, 11:03 AM | You can also use the drow racial class in the Drow of the Underdark. |
| jradd77703-08-08, 02:35 PM | There are races with LA 0 and a bonus to Cha.Two that come to mind is Lesser Aasimar with +2 Cha and +2 Wis From PGTF and Spellscale with +2 Cha -2 Con From Races of the dragon. Yeah, Spellscale is a great choice, they are really cool. |
