Dwarves, armor, and weight [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-20-07, 10:24 PM So, me and the guys are kinda wondering about this.

Dwarf speed is 20ft, but they can move at this speed even when wearing medium or heavy armor or carrying a medium or heavy load.

Is that an and/or situation? As in, if I wear heavy armor and carry a heavy load will I be penalised for one of those? Or will I continue to move at 20ft? I know that you take the higher penalty from the two when you carry them, but does the Dwarf racial trait only apply to one and not the other if you have both?

07-20-07, 10:55 PM It is all inclusive. Dwarves are uneffected by the weight of their armor worn. When carrying a heavy load they are also uneffected. The only thing to remember is that that the actual weight of the armor does count against how much weight they can carry.
EX: 18 STR Dwarf can carry 300 lbs on a heavy load. Wearing Full Plate, weight 50 lbs, lowers his heavy load to 250 lbs.

The real question should be; since Max Dex is determined by the encumbrace of armor or the weight someone is carrying, would Dwarves be limited to the max dex of the armor worn.
EX: Full Plate max dex +1.

07-20-07, 11:24 PM As a general rule, encumberance penalties do not stack. This can be cited in the Adventuring section of the PHB near the weight capacity tables.

The dwarf takes no speed penalty for encumberance. That is what the ability does for your dwarf. Dexterity penalties accrue normally, meaning, you take the highest penalty attributed to encumberance. In the case of a Platemail sporting dwarf his dexterity is still limited by the armor normally.
