Hi,
I'm thinking about a special background for one of my players.
he will play a doppleganger (rogue/spymaster). but I don't know if it exist some ecology of the doppleganger.
where the doppleganger is coming from ? is there a society of doppleganger ?
I don't know if there are some informations about them in some book (official or not).
could you give me some news ?

Thanks for all

In the Forgotten Realms, Doppelganger are the descendands of one of the five creatore races, much like the Lizardmen and Yuan-Ti are. (I have to admit I forgot what the other five were.)

About their society today: No one knows? :D
There could be actually only one single group of them in the whole world and everytime anyone detects a doppelganger, it's always them (though that would mean they are in fact quite bad in staying unnoticed), or there could be millions of them and just no one knows. They could act all individually, in small groups, in huge groups or even all in one single group. That's the fun about them, you will never now who they are and what they want (if they want anything and are not just regular mercenaries) and that's what makes them so dangerous. Or better, could make them dangerous, if they actually are up to something. Maybe they're not. :D

But when a player wants to play a doppelganger, he will most likely want to know. If he does not, then just keep it all the way it is. There may be a reason why he's adventuring with the party, but it's not important right now for the game. If he wants, than I'd say that doppelgangers often live and work together in small groups of 6 to 10 and just try to get the most exiting and well paid jobs by people wanting their service. I think that would be what I'd do with doppelgangers in my setting.

I remember one time back in 2nd edition when our DM put us up against dopplegangers.

She made up a really freakish ecology for them; it turns out that dopplegangers are eusocial, meaning they have a queen who lays eggs to produce average doppleganger. The queen herself, of course, was not in any way humanoid (she looked more like a forty-foot long alien crayfish) and hid deep in a cavern complex in a nearby mountain. She sent out groups of dopplegangers to establish successful strongholds in nearby cities, so that she could eventually create more queens and have enough infastructure to support them.

Dopplegangers in her campaign world were somewhat more evil than most, but the thing with the queen was just damn cool.
