PRICK
A small red skinned humanoid creeps toward you. It wields a strange barbed longsword and wears armor made from the bones of small creatures. Suddenly the fey screams and charges forth, revealing a mouth full of wicked fangs.

These twisted offshoots of the proud thorns delight in wrecking havoc on enemies of the fey realms. Pricks supposedly deviated from regular thorns when a corrupt druid began to wean plants on blood and rotting corpses. To aid in the development of his macabre garden he enlisted local thorns. At first the druid told the thorns that the local inhabitants were abusing nature and that they should be captured and brought to the druid so that he may inform and punish them of their wrongdoings. The thorns eagerly agreed and with their sleep arrows made short work of all the inhabitants. The druid then surprised the thorns by torturing and killing the inhabitants, but instead of stopping the druid, they cheered him on. Eventually this event led to more and more corrupt acts distinguishing these dark thorns from their pious cousins.

Unpleasant stories of pricks invading humanoid homes too close to their borders are quite common. Events such as families trapped within their homes by combinations of entangle and warp wood spells only to be mutilated and killed by pricks bursting through the floor boards are quite common. Leaving horrific remains to be discovered by visiting friends or relatives years later. Pricks generally do not have clerics or druids. Their morbid behavior denies any chances of fey deities granting them spells. Instead they draw magic from within themselves as demonstrated by their numerous warlocks.

COMBAT
Pricks will fight off any non-fey they encounter. Druids and rangers are the only exception, but they are barely tolerated at best.
Pricks begin combat by surprising their victims with volleys of sleep arrows. A few elite pricks will then flank the survivors and deal out sneak attacks, while covered by their warlocks.
Pricks are occasionally led by other malevolent fey such as redcaps.
Unless they have significant advantage, pricks will flee at the mere sight of cold iron weapons.

SOCIETY
Prick society is more akin to goblins instead of any of the faerie races. Their strongest warrior, who is advised by two to three elder warlocks, usually leads a clan of pricks. Pricks are not openly aggressive to good fey but usually refuse reside near such “weak” neighbors. In times of dire need, fey will sometimes enlist the aid of local pricks.

PRICKS AS CHARACTERS
Prick characters tend toward evil; although most pricks are chaotic evil, some have turned away from their twisted ways.
Pricks possess the following racial traits.
—-2 Str, +2 Dex, -2 Int.
—Small Size. +1 bonus to Armor Class, +1 bonus on attack rolls, +4 bonus on Hide checks, -4 penalty on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits 3/4 those of medium characters.
—A Prick's base land speed is 30ft.
—Natural Weapon: bite(1d4).
—+2 racial bonus on Knowledge(nature) and Survival checks.
—+2 racial bonus vs Sleep and Charm effects.
—Damage Reduction(Ex): A Prick gains damage reduction as it gains hit dice indicated by the table below.

Hit Dice Bonus
4 DR 1/cold iron
8 DR 2/cold iron
12 DR 3/cold iron
16 DR 4/cold iron
20 DR 5/cold iron

Sleep Poison (Ex): pricks carry a poison commonly used by pixies. Any opponent struck by a weapon coated in this poison, regardless of Hit Dice, must make a Fortitude save, or be affected by a sleep spell. The save DC is equal to 10 + 1/2 prick’s hit dice + charisma modifier + 2 racial bonus. A prick can create a number of doses equal to his charisma modifier per day. The poison loses its potency after one day. A prick never accidentally poisons himself when applying this particular type of poison to an item.

—Low-Light Vision (Ex): A creature with low-light vision can see twice as far as human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of shadowy illumination. It retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
—Automatic Languages: Common and Sylvan. Bonus Languages: Elven, Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Halfing
—Favored Class: Good-aligned, Druid or Ranger. Evil-aligned, Rogue or Warlock.

The name of this monster/race just cracks me up. Does the race seem balanced? Suggestions? Comments? I never did like the idea of favored classes so I didn't put a whole lot of thought into that. The main thing is the damage reduction, does it seem overpowered or underpowered for its rate of advancement? I really don't think there are enough races that gain more features as they gain HD.
