| sigma99907-25-07, 09:16 PM | I predict an explosion, long overdue, of fey-type PCs, feats, spells, monsters, related classes, items, and more coinciding with the release of the rapidly approaching Lorwyn MTG set. Thoughts on this topic? Are there fey 'monsters' any of you have read about or head of but never seen before in any WOTC publication, but would like to see statted out? |
| Steely_Dan07-26-07, 06:41 AM | I have long wanted a Book of Fey (ala Draconomicon etc). I would like to see the Seelie and Unseelie Courts fleshed out as well as the Plane of Faerie. And there are still quite a few fey from older editions that haven't been updated (leprechaun, killmoulis, quicklings, atomie etc). |
| skydin07-26-07, 06:44 AM | the plane of faeries is located rather close to the elemental plane of chocolate, for obvious reasons. they may even share a border. |
| DwarfPcfan07-26-07, 10:27 AM | 2 things I want: SIDHE and Thuata Danan Seriously, these elf like fey are really what fey are about not some butterfly winged runts with seriousm pixie dust problems that nixies and the like are Anyone want cool fey, read the Dresden Files especially "Summer Knight"... |
| Asra07-26-07, 03:22 PM | I once played a half-fey who I just said was unseelie, so I made him creepy looking and gave him moth wings. Don't all fey have d6s for hit dice? It seems to be that way from what I've seen. |
| heavens_wrath07-26-07, 03:43 PM | i know that they had their "15 minutes of fame" in a dragon magazine, but i'd really like to see a bit more on the shadar-kai. |
| elondir07-26-07, 04:04 PM | I like fey. They're rooted in folklore and there's tons of use for them besides hippie seductresses and Tinkerbells. One of the few monsters in MMV that I like is a cold-based fey. I forget the name. |
| AnonymousInternets07-26-07, 04:18 PM | Fey are really interesting and fit into the fantasy setting so well. I really think they should provide more information for them. |
| sigma99907-26-07, 05:03 PM | Well if everything in this pattern of synergistic Magic cards/D&D releases holds up to past occurances, we will see a flury of fey by October.... Just in time for Samhain harhar One race I have yet to see in d20 is the Boggart, a squat shapeshifter and/or household pest that gets its kicks from spooking mortals. Possibly part devil or something, but from an internet source I read recently they are sometimes created when a Brownie 'goes bad'. As far as the Unseelie/Seelie releases from (unofficial) various publishers, I've been mostly unsatisfied. After a few years of trying to stat out seperate subraces or templates I came to the conclusion that each is more of an ethos, a dogma, a group or 'state of mind' than a collective race. So rather than have S/U version of every fey race, simpy changing the Spell-Like Abilities from, say, Charm Person to Cause Fear might do the trick. There has been a tiny spot about Seelie and Unseelie in Complete Mage... some feats and a PrC "Wild Soul". It's something, but I was not very pleased. Here's what I've gathered from many sources on the 2 factions; Unseelie have a wide range of members, from fey-giants (but not fomorians!) to goblinoids to Labyrinth-like Jareth clones to half-fiends, but Seelie would be more like Tolkien elves and very, very homogeneous. Unseelie exist to protect fey from the encroaching and sometimes poisonous influence of the iron-loving mortal races; such protection sometimes goes to the extreme and that's when you read of "the little girl was killed by elfshot" or "the old man danced until he died". Seelie are emotionally distant, elitist, and honor-bound to none other than their own laws, and even though they realize mortals are a good asset to have nearby one must always be cautious. They will help mortals in need, but the laws of their own people supercede the well-being of lost or needy mortals.... Individual fey are also one of two types; Solitary or Trooping, sometimes racially and sometimes by choice. Seelie tend to Trooping, creating long silent processions when traveling, but Unseelie sometimes swarm in the sky as a "horde", which might include imps, devils, and various flying fiends or part-fiends. One of the Monster Manuals lists recommended sizes and ability scores for all Hit Die types. One of the types is Fey, and the maximum size listed is Colossal. ... Has anyone seen a Colossal fey???? |
| AnonymousInternets07-28-07, 04:36 AM | I've wanted to start a user-made book project for some time, and considering how much I think 3.5 needs more Fey material, I'm thinking of using that as the subject of the said book. If you're interested, just let me know here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=894950 I want to assemble people before starting things, because I really want it to be a group project. |
| sigma99907-28-07, 05:16 PM | Ah, that's tricky, since my organization skills are... sub-par. Still amassing a veritable lbrary of fey material myself though, and in a matter of weeks I should have all those things you specified on your own thread; races, items, classes, all that good stuff. However the problem lies in presentation! It will look like crap though. Lists, draft notes, shorthand, all those taboos of writing, it's how I 'work' fast. Without shortcuts I might take months to do the same. Fluff comes easily, maybe too easy. That's no problem. But tasks like writing out an entire chart for a class or prestige class, even with templates, is what bogs me down. Right now I am finishing a list of monsters that should be fey, or could be, but aren't. It encompasses most Monster books in D&D, including Fiend Folio and a few splat books. Mostly the MM series though. Sadly, it's written fast and much notation, such as (S) and (U) next to the race names rather than writing Seelie/Unseelie every time (with guide at top, of course) but that's how I got all this together in much less time than I had expected. So, in short I would love to contribute to your project AnonymousInternets but I fear that my work might not approach a level of professionalism required for any major publication. It's great that you are taking initiative in assembling such a project and don't let anyone dissuade you, though. |

| Serge_P07-31-07, 05:41 PM | More small critters with butterfly wings, (a la the sylph and the coure eladrin). More faerie dust. More rainbows, gold, butterflies, dusk and flowers. My :twocents: |
| Phelix_the_Warrior07-31-07, 06:03 PM | lol, next time I play a campaign of at least 3rd level starting out Im playing a Half-Fey since I only just recently found them in fiend folio, and Im extreamly interested in playing one, perhaps a half-fey warlock...that could be very interesting....(I enjoy playing oxymoron characters, things that dont make sense ect. such as an undead cleric who worships pelor and has healing as a domain) |
| sigma99907-31-07, 06:03 PM | Heh seconded on the 'fairy dust'. My AD&D MM says that the stuff is a "byproduct" of Pixies. It also says it's made from tons of ground-up Pixie wings, but remember in Peter Pan it came out of Tinkerbell's butt? I'm thinking it's something else. Which would be ironic because the highly marketable magic Fairy Dust would then be, well, you get the idea. It could be part of an ecosystem; Fey excrete the stuff, plants absorb it, plants give out better fruit and grow faster which small Fey thrive on, then larger Fey eat the small Fey. |
| Serge_P08-01-07, 12:47 PM | lol, next time I play a campaign of at least 3rd level starting out Im playing a Half-Fey since I only just recently found them in fiend folio, and Im extreamly interested in playing one, perhaps a half-fey warlock...that could be very interesting....(I enjoy playing oxymoron characters, things that dont make sense ect. such as an undead cleric who worships pelor and has healing as a domain) Why doesn't fey warlock make sense? Some warlocks get their power from fey blood. (And not only devil blood). |
| sigma99908-02-07, 05:29 PM | Hmmm there's references all over any WOTC material on Warlocks about their power sometimes being Fey, but the crunch just doesn't back it up. There's a prestige class for good Warlocks and it gives very Celestial-like abilities, but all Fey get is some junky summoning/rogue-like PrC that's not even Warlock specific. I'd make one for Fey followers but personally I don't like the Warlock very much, and not because it's unbalanced. I feel it's very limited in scope even though the appearance of a non-Vancian "at will once per round" caster is a very good sign (finally). I'd rather see something like feats, maybe Reserve feats only better, for Sorcerers to give them Invocations. But change the names, since Invocations belong with "evocations" and that's an arcane school. |
| sigma99908-02-07, 08:16 PM | http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dd/20070727a I’d been in brainstorming meetings for previous monster manuals, and filling those niches was a major concern: “We should really do more high-level plants… or fey...” You get the idea. But looking at the total monster population—and an established player preference for demons over fey, for example—those gaps had largely been filled by six years of monster creation. Wow. So they are at least considering more over there in R&D... Sorry for double post, this was urgent :P EDIT: HAHAHA look at Noonan's chart for designing MM5 and near the bottom under "Special" category, near bottom-center... With codename "Belfour". Do you see that? Hmm? http://wizards.com/dnd/images/designdev_monster_full.jpg That makes me excited. |
| raichi08-09-07, 10:26 PM | if there were to be a fey explosion i would literatly have a heart attack dream of faerie life awaken right in the store where i saw it go to town and celebrate fey are a long missed adition and need to happen GO FAERIESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS woot !!!!!!!!!!! |
