Hiho,

I am starting a new campaign, but since it never lasted to epick levels we've decided to start it with chars on 17th lvls

So players wanted to take templates such as half-fiend and fiend...

I looked many different placec, and almost everywhere those tempaltes have different stats :-(

And i have some questions about their CR
half-fiend is said to add +2 to ECL when the char is at least 12HD+, but do half-fiends add any additional HD?

and what about fiend template - it doesn't have attribute increase, but has many other cool featerues, and as far as I know it doesn't require any additional extraplanar HD

is half-deva an equevalent template for good characters?

I am afraid you are confusing CR (Challenge Rating) with LA (Level Adjustment). The half-fiend template (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/halfFiend.htm) is a LA+4 template, so it means the characters lose 4 class levels. Instead of level 17, they would be level 13.

There is no half-deva template, a character with a deva parent would be a half-celestial (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/halfCelestial.htm).

thanks :-] i thkink i get the point

"Challenge Rating

HD 4 or less, as base creature +1; HD 5 to 10, as base creature +2; HD 11 or more, as base creature +3. "

and

"Level Adjustment

+4. "

so i know i have subtract 4 lvl's so they can pick a half-celestial, but what's with the HD? if their char has 11HD+ it means his CR increases? [get's less xp ect]

so for example if they have 6HD outsider + 6 lvl cleric, they get + 4 for lvl adjustement and + 2 for HD = CR 18 ?

btw, half-fiends/celestials have abilities depending on the hit die... (protection from good/evil... ect) so we get them depending on the outsider HD or our general HD (including class lvls) ?

Half-celestials and half-fiends do not have more HD, unless from races with racial HD in the first place.

In general, do not worry about the CR of the player characters, it is irrelevant.

The CR of a 6HD critter with 6 levels of cleric (with PC HD) would be 14 (12HD, means a +2 for the template) if the cleric levels were judged by the DM to be a "favored class" (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm#monstersAndClassLe vels) for the creature. If the creature was a player character it would be 6 (HD) + 6 (levels) + 4 (template) + (whatever LA the original 6HD race was) = 16+
