Fling Racial Traits • Type: Fey • -2 Strength, -2 Con, +4 Dexterity, -2 wisdom, +2 Intelligence, +2 Charisma: Curious by nature. • Small: As a small creature, a Fling gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack roles, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but she uses smaller weapons than humans use, and her lifting and carrying limits are three quarters of those of a Medium character. • Fling base land speed is 30 feet. Quick for a little while. • +2 racial bonus on jump, move silently and Climb checks. • +2 racial bonus on Listen checks • Low-Light Vision: a Fling can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. She retains the ability to distinguish colors under these conditions. • +1 racial bonus to attack with thrown weapons and slings. • +4 racial bonus to will saves. • One extra feat at first level. • -4 racial penalty to intimidate. Too cute to bully anything. • Favored Class: Rogue. A multiclass Fling's rogue class does not count when determining whether she takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing. • Level adjustment +1 Flings tend to pay little attention to their surroundings but their keen hearing and quick thinking once they are aware of the situation generally get them moving fast enough to get out of trouble in time. They are fiercely competitive to such a point that it often gets them in tight situations which they are often happy to deal with for the sport. It is as if Flings prefer surprise to probability, sometimes their curiosity gets the better of them. Although they can be quite competent adversaries, their cute features and size don't impress most creatures they encounter. |
| Grizzled Gryphon01-08-08, 09:04 AM | "All right, men!! Get ready, here they come!! hold your ground when they charge, and... and... Hey, wait a minute!! I thought the scout said a bunch of Flinds were coming... False alarm, men, false alarm. You can all go home now." -Town Militia Captain- Seriously after looking at this race, why the LA? They don't seem to have anything that really sets them off as more powerful than average. The favored class thing is a little odd, as it says "a multiclass apecat's Rogue levels...". |
| zacnn01-08-08, 07:39 PM | Are You Kidding! This is at least a +1 due to the extra feat and bouneses. |
| Ikeman0401-08-08, 08:39 PM | ...what's an apecat, and why is it in a stat block for something called a Fling? |
| AtsuiShoto01-08-08, 09:17 PM | Flings would be excellent shuriken-throwers, I bet. In such a capacity, I don't think the +1 LA would be crippling, but I could probably come up with several dozen popular character ideas that a fling would not work well for. My only criticism is that it's an overly specialized race, but that's not the end of the world. |
| Talisman01-10-08, 04:19 PM | First, "flings"? Call 'em "feylings," please. Or apecats :P Why the giant hit to Wisdom? I'd drop it; for a LA +1 race, you don't have to balance out the stats. Also, why a bonus feat? If you want a LA +1 race, drop the Wis penalty and you've got a strong +1. Of you want a LA +0 race, drop the bonus feat and cut the Will bonus to +2, apply it only to fear effects or enchantment spells, or even ditch it entirely. I'd also consider scrapping the Int and Con mods, as I see little justification for them, and the restrict the race even more narrowly. As-is, these guys would make good warlocks, sorcerers, warmages or wizards, and passable rogues...and that's about it. |

Well, I wanted a carefree sort that could deal with something when it finally saw it. Well, not quite; Smart but not wise was the idea, too curious. Bonus feat is from strongheart halfling's competitive nature. You think I can drop all the wis penalty? I definitely want a +1 adjustment. I'd also consider scrapping the Int and Con mods, as I see little justification for them, and the restrict the race even more narrowly. As-is, these guys would make good warlocks, sorcerers, warmages or wizards, and passable rogues...and that's about it. The con mod was from the feytouched and the int from general fey. So what about the wis you ask, yes they sometimes get wisdom bonuses but, curious does not go together with wis. Passable rogue? this guy's going to be a dagger specialist! |
