| Noblehawk3310-19-07, 10:48 PM | With what seems like some interest in a playable fey creature here is my attempt at a playable race. I am only posting the crunch not the fluff. I believe it would be a LA 0 race but feel free to comment. Forest Fairy Physical Description: Forest Fairies appear as miniature elves 6" to 8" in height and weigh around 1 pound. Their skin ranges from fair to dark brown to pale green. Eye and hair colors are wildly varied. Their wings are thin and come in two types either butterfly or dragonfly appearing. They prefer to garb themselves in natural materials such as leaves but may also created detailed beautiful clothing from scraps they find. Forest Fairies reach adulthood after 5 years and seem to stop aging at that point until they fade away around 800 to 1000 years old. Relations: Forest fairies get along well with other fey and sometimes with gnomes and elves. Many times they can be found near trees guarded by treants or dryads. For the most part they avoid the big folk and stay within their own communities except for the rare adventurous soul. Alignment: Forest Fairies are always chaotic and most often good or neutral. Religion: Forest Fairies worship nature deities and have no pantheon of their own. Language: Forest Fairies speak Sylvan and Elven. A few may learn common or other languages. Forest Fairies Racial Traits -4 Constitution, -4 Strength, +4 Dexterity: Forest Fairies are very delicate and weak boned. Diminutive: As diminutive creatures they gain a +4 size bonus to AC and on attack rolls. They use weapons much smaller then even small creatures ( a short sword does 1D2 damage and a long bow 1D3 ) also their carrying and lifting limits are only 20% that of a medium sized creature. The range of their weapons are also reduced to 20% of normal. They also gain a +12 size bonus on hide checks and a -12 on grapple checks. Base land speed is 5ft and they fly at 15ft with good maneuverability. They can not fly wearing medium or heavy armor or carrying more then a light load. Dark vision 60 ft Weapon proficiency: Forest fairies are proficient with all simple weapons, all swords and bows. Often they tip their arrows with a powerful sleep potion. Fey blood: As a fey type creature they are not affected by charm person or hold person spells. They also have a damage reduction DR5 cold iron. They also suffer anathema from cold iron and suffer -2 on attack rolls with cold iron weapons even if the weapon is only partial made from it. +2 racial bonus on saving throws against illusion and enchantment spells. +1 to the DC for all saving throws against illusion and enchantment spells cast by forest fairies. Automatic Languages: Sylvan and Elven. Bonus languages: Common, Draconic, Gnome, and halfling. Favorite Class: Sorcerer most forest fairies have at least a few levels of sorcerer. |
| jradd77710-19-07, 11:12 PM | Should they also have Cold Iron Anathema, as Killoren in Races of the Wild? |
| Noblehawk3310-20-07, 12:15 AM | Thanks for the great suggestion noted and updated. |
| jradd77710-20-07, 02:29 AM | Also, should you write up the vulnerability to spells that banish them (which would include giving them some home plane that they aren't banished from)? Will you be writing up some fluff for the race at any point on this thread? |
| Noblehawk3310-20-07, 04:05 AM | If I get enough positive feedback I will write up and post some fluff. I don't understand the banishment question as I see them they are native to the prime material plane. Not a spiritual creature. I have just seen a few requests for a LA 0 flying race that I thought I would throw my hat in the ring with an attempt. I figure the movement rate and size should make an LA of-2 and the flight an LA of+2 = LA0 if the rest of the stats are balanced enough. And yes you would have to be very creative to want to use it for anything but a spell caster but a multi class rogue or even a range fighter could be possible. Before I write up and post any fluff I want to make sure people like the mechanics and that they are not broken or at least overly broken. The name itself I think is lame but wanted something simple and clear. |
| Finfreeze10-20-07, 05:29 PM | I think -2 Str and +4 Dex is a tad redundant, considering the massive size adjustments forest fairies get (smaller creatures carry less, do less weapon damage, and are harder to hit). -4 Con is also debilitating, but... Diminutive creatures get +12 to Hide checks, attack rolls, and AC from size. That's the scariest part of the balancing process, and probably why that -4 Constitution is there. Tiny size would be easier to balance, but it would throw off some of the flavor. It may still be too tailor-made for a spellcaster role, but some variety is needed nonetheless. Are forest fairies automatically proficient with swords and bows? How about axing the simple weapons proficiency entirely, and just add "Weapon Familiarity: Swords and Bows" to their racial traits? How about letting forest fairies with reach weapons threaten and attack 5' out, but not their own space? Just a compilation of my thoughts below; take what you like and discard what you dislike. FOREST FAIRIES +2 Cha, -2 Con Type: Fey. Tiny Size. +2 bonus to AC and attack rolls, +8 bonus on hide checks, 1/2 carrying capacity of medium creatures, must use smaller weapons, reach 0' unless wielding a reach weapon, fighting space 2 1/2 feet. Base land speed 5'. Base fly speed 10' (good maneuverability). Weapon Familiarity: Swords and Bows. Unlike other fey, forest fairies are not automatically proficient with simple weapons by virtue of their typing. Cold Iron Anathema: Forest Fairies take one and a half times more damage from cold iron weapons. In addition, they take a -2 penalty to attack rolls when wielding a weapon made of cold iron. +2 racial bonus on saving throws against illusion and enchantment spells. +1 racial bonus on DCs for illusion and enchantment spells. Automatic Languages: Sylvan and Elven. Bonus languages: Common, Draconic, Gnome, and Halfling. Favorite Class: Sorcerer. |
| HCL10-20-07, 06:10 PM | im sorry but im seeing REALLY overpowered sorcerers here with high natural AC and charisma. I dont think +0 races should ever get a bonus to a mentals stat, that was why gnomes were changed from being +int - wis favored class wizard to +con - str favored class bard was because they were making wizard (and could multiclass illusionist with fighter and thief) at a power level of OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAND compared to human and elf wizards, with better, intelligence, AC, and hide at a given level. |
| Noblehawk3310-20-07, 07:29 PM | good points HCL and Finfreeze thank you have made changes to the stats bonuses and weapon familiarity. Yes the size is there for the flavor and I really like the idea of a creature that size. I think the fey that are done in the MM's are too large and just not how I have always envisioned fairies. I did not realize it was a geometric progression with AC and attack rolls. Thanks for the help. |
| jradd77710-20-07, 09:40 PM | I don't understand the banishment question as I see them they are native to the prime material plane. Not a spiritual creature. Yeah, sorry, I saw the banishment thing on the dusklings because they are extraplanar fey, I generalized that to all fey for some ridiculous reason (probably just not enough sleep), but it doesn't have to be "spiritual" to be subject to such spells (obvioulsy since Dusklings are, just extraplanar), which I was thinking you could always throw in the help balance a little if anyone thinks it's overpowered at any point.. |
| Findail10-23-07, 04:01 PM | Definitely keep the Diminutive size. Fairies are supposed to be that small. I think you need to increase the Strength penalty. Yes, they use very small weapons and have low lifting/carrying limits, but small races get strength penalties on top of that. Both of the "small" standard PC races (halflings and gnomes) have -2 Str, and these are two sizes smaller than that. Working from the size increase chart in "improving monsters", and applying all the changes backwards from Medium to Diminutive cumulatively, I get: Str -10 Dex +6 Con -2 That's pretty extreme, and you need not go that far (note that Halflings and Gnomes are already stronger than they should be for their size, which should be -4 on this chart), but maybe -6 would be appropriate (comparable to Grigs, which are actually one size larger than them). Grigs (in the MM under "Sprite") get: Str -6 Dex +8 Con +2 (yes, they're pretty tough and feisty) Maybe Str -6, Dex +6, Con -2 or -4? They would definitely need a Level Adjust though: probably LA +2. They'd be very good at hiding, hard to hit (size adjust AND Dex adjust to AC), good initiative and reflex saves, very accurate with ranged weapons (including ray spells): again, size AND Dex bonuses to hit. Plus the ability to fly, of course: which will keep them out of reach of many opponents. I suggest increasing their fly speed to 20. That's still slower than a Human, but not so very slow that the party's movement rate drops to half that of a Dwarf. And maybe a land speed of 10. That's half the speed of a Grig. |
| Noblehawk3310-23-07, 10:56 PM | Thank you for the input Findail. One of the things that I am attempting is to create a fey creature that has a +0 LA. In order to do this I kept the fly speed low. They can keep up with a party they will just need to use one as a mount. A low fly speed also keeps flight from being as much of advantage in combat as it will take time to reach altitude and then with their range restrictions they will be limited on their ability to hit. Good points on the ability modifiers. I originally had a dex bonus but when I realized how great the size bonus was to AC I took it out. As far as strength goes I think that the size modifier is handicap enough they will hardly be able to carry anything as is unless they do not use it as a dump stat which is unlikely. I purposely made them to fit a sorcerers role. A fighter would be rare indeed. There seemed to be a lot of interest in a 0 LA fey and that was what I was going for combined with the size which I have stated before is just more what I think of when I think Fairy. One of the main problems was how to keep them at a 0 with their size and flight. I also do not like the strength negatives to smaller creatures its like a stacking bonus in reverse. That is why I kept it at such a low modifier. With this in mind do you think they would be playable and rate a 0 LA? About the land speed I just can not see something this small covering 10 feet without hustling. 5 feet is a long ways if your only 6 inches. They are a little more the a tenth the size of a human so I think 5 feet is a good round off point and they are then moving roughly as fast as a human to scale. Thank you again for your input. |
| Kari10-24-07, 01:12 PM | As written, this class is totally unplayable. Why? First: The move speed is ridiculously low. I understand the base move of 5', but only 10' fly? When travelling, they might be able to hitch a ride on a companion, but during combat, that's not an option, usually. Which makes movement around a battlefield almost impossible, especially if duration AoE spells are in effect. Second: Due to both the penalty to Strength and to Constitution, they're useless as a physical fighter, or nearly so. This is compounded by their incredibly small weapon sizes. Being a rogue can compensate (or certain PrCs such as Order o the Bow Initiate). The huge bonus to AC and attacks definitely helps there, but if going rogue, most damage is inflicted via flanking - and thanks to the low movement, flanking will take several rounds to accomplish. Oh, wait - they're Diminutive, so they don't threaten an area, and can't flank ANYWAY. Whoops. Third: Reduced range on both weapons AND spells? To 20%? Why? This race's best chance to do any good in a party is to be a spellcaster, and having all ranges dropped to 1/5th normal is an absolute -killer-. Why should spell range be affected by your size? It's not like Storm Giants get bonuses to range on their spells.... This also kills my earlier suggestion of Order of the Bow Initiate, since you'll need to be within 6 feet to even use the primary ability of the class, which, once again, requires movement. Fourth: Cold Iron does double damage against them? Wow, not even a minor bonus, but doubled? added into the -4 on the Con, and if this race takes -one- shot from a cold iron weapon, they're gone! --- My suggestions? Drop the reduced ranges on weapons and spells. Raise the fly speed to 20'. Get rid of the double damage from cold iron. Then, this race will be playable at a +0 LA. As it stands now, this race is completely unuseable. |
| Noblehawk3310-24-07, 11:30 PM | my thoughts on the reduced spell range was to limit the power but it sounds as if I made too many conditions limiting them. I have removed the spell range restriction. I think that the range weapons need to be reduced. I stand by the speed and yes I know this severely limits them but it is a trade off for flight and size. low flight speed makes it harder for them to get altitude thus limiting the value of flight. If I raised it to 20 as suggested then in one round they could be 80 feet above the party and with their size hardly noticeable. Yes they would only be good as a caster unless they were very well built range fighters. The cold iron is a standard weakness for fey creatures and in an adventure I can not see it coming into play that often. How often are cold iron weapons used by NPC's? Thank you for your opinions and I welcome any others. |
| Noblehawk3311-04-07, 07:13 PM | Ok Any one else have any suggestions or thoughts on this creature/ race? I am going to try to play a character made from this soon and would like to make sure that all the bugs are worked out first thanks for all those that have helped so far |

| Noblehawk3311-05-07, 04:00 AM | I am hoping to add some more fluff to this race in the next few days. Thanks for the support and let me know what your DM thinks of it. |
| Noblehawk3311-06-07, 12:47 PM | Does anyone have an opinion if I took out the double damage from cold Iron and gave them DR 5 cold Iron? would they still be a +0 la? |
| Noblehawk3311-16-07, 04:05 PM | Ok I have made a few more changes after getting some help in the chat room. If anyone can convince a DM to let them try this race let me know how it goes. |
| raichi11-25-07, 06:51 PM | this might change with the fluff or the la but shouldn't they have no age limit? |
| Noblehawk3311-25-07, 10:13 PM | Thanks for the input Raichi. I had considered this when I was making up the race. I was unsure what no age limit would do to the LA and I really want to keep it at a LA 0. I thought that a good compromise was to give them no aging effects after they reach adulthood and a long life span. Although being this small I doubt if most would survive to die a natural death. |
