That's something of an Ebberon setting thing. I would consider posting there. (I cannot help you personally, sorry.)

I would refer you to Edymnion's guide though: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=821314

I remember when I was a noob: we all wanted to be red wizards. (I know. it's hard to immagine inexperienced players wanting to play complicated classes.:P ) The hardest aspect to master for myself was the process and subtle details of roleplaying. While it was a kind of stiff and mechanic playstyle for a while, but we eventually had gotten enough practice that portraying another persona became second nature. So I suppose the best advice I can think to give is to simply practice the awkward art of roleplaying among your friends and in time it will improve not only the quality of your gaming sessions, but the overall fun you all have as well.

half-noob huh? Well, it beats half moron(order of the stick) Again, try the ebberon boards, or just play and let it evolve, you need to suit your DMs style. And whatever you do, don't take the toughness feat, it is the biggest waste ever.

Artificer is a complicated class. I have to say, I wouldn't recommend it for a "half-noob."
