| JarionSilverblades11-24-07, 05:56 PM | Sometime ago I created a Cat race called Wildmane Panynx (see home-brewed races), all my players have loved the race. Now one of my players is going to start a new campaign, he has created his own world, but liked the Panynx so much he wants them in his world. His world is in the middle of a little ice age, and he wants the panynx, I told him I had a Arctic sub-race, but hadn't finished it yet. This is that race, please PEACH, any thoughts, ideas, and comments are welcome. FROSTCLAW PANYNX FROSTCLAW RACIAL TRAITS ● +2 Constitution, -2 Dexterity: Frostclaw Panynx are much hardier then the Wildmane, but lack their agility and grace. ● Medium: As Medium creatures, Frostclaw have no special bonuses or penalties due to his size. ● Frostclaw base land speed is 30 feet. ● Superior Low-Light Vision: An Frostclaw can see four times as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. He retain the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions. ● Cold Tolerance: Frostclaw Panynx gain a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against cold damage and cold effects. Frostclaw Panynx can also exist comfortably in conditions between -20 degrees and 90 degrees F (severe cold or hot) without having to make Fortitude saves (see Cold Damage, page 302 DM’s Guide). This ability counts as if a Frostclaw Panynx had the Cold Endurance feat for purpose of fulfilling prerequisites for other feats or prestige classes ● +2 racial bonus on Knowledge (nature) and Survival checks. ● +2 racial bonus on balance check: Long hours on the icy tundra have given Frostclaws uncanny balance. ● Automatic Languages: Common and Panynx. Bonus Languages Dwarven, Goblin, Giant, and Orc. Frostclaw commonly know the languages of their enemies and allies. In addition, a Frostclaw can speak with Arctic felines (Snow leopards, White tigers, or the like). This ability is innate to Frostclaw Panynx. See the speak with animals spell, page 281 PH. ● Spell-like Ability: 1/day-speak with animals (Arctic Cats only, duration 1 minute). ● Favored Class: Barbarian. A multiclass Frostclaw’s Barbarian class does not count when determining whether he takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing. Personality: Frostclaw panynx are the hardy, savage, arctic cousins of the more common Wildmane panynx. They are often reserved, and suspicious of other races. Frostclaw hold their traditions in the highest regards, as well as the ideals of the “true way of nature”. Frostclaw believe in what they call “the true way of nature”, which is basically, the survival of the fittest. This not to say they are cruel, far from it, but life in the harsh ice wastes limits food, and most that are weak, wether from age or disease, will voluntarily live a clan. Those that leave for this reason are treated as heroes, giving up their lives for family and clan. Frostclaw have a deep sense of honor and duty. They fear and despise all magic, except for that wielded by clerics and druids. Physical Description: Frostclaw males have well muscled bodies and typical stand between 5'6" and just Under 7', and weigh from 140 to 240 pounds. Females also have well muscled bodies but have slender builds and stand between 5'2" and 5'8" but rarely any taller, and weigh from 110 to 155 pounds .All Frostclaw are covered in a fine soft fur, Frostclaw fur can range from White to grey, and typical has some kind of black pattern, cheetah or leopard spots, or tiger stripes along the neck, shoulders, and back. Their hair colors very from Blonde, grey or white. Frostclaw have cat like ears, and semi-flat noses, their mouths are somewhat cat like. A Frostclaw’s eyes are cat like and come in all colors but are most commonly Grey and light blue. Frostclaw have strong physical bodies that fits their cat like appearance, while not as quick as their wildmane cousins. Frostclaw heavy, thick, warm, clothing made of animal hide. Many other races look upon the Frostclaw as savage and brutal. A Frostclaw reaches adulthood at about 16 years of age and can live to be more then 100 years old, but few live beyond old age. Relations: Frostclaw limit their exposer to the other races. They see elves and half-elves as weak, and despise their use of arcane magic. Frostclaw most often encounter human barbarians, who they admire for their strength, resourcefulness, and combat prowess. Halflings and Gnomes seen as weak, tricksters, and thieves. Frostclaw are friendly with Dwarves, seeing them as the strongest of the common races, after the Frostclaw of course, they are also admired for their skills in the forge as well as in battle. Half-Orcs and Orc-elves are treated just as a full blood Orcs would be with disdain, and even threats, neither are trusted and never welcome. Alignment: Frostclaw are often chaotic neutral. Panynx Lands: Frostclaw make there homes in the frozen wastes of the north, in areas with plentiful game for food and clothing. Frostclaw “families” are referred to as “Clans”, not “Prides”. Each clan consisting of no more then a hundred frostclaw, each clan has a single leader, always the strongest male, as well as at least three elders (one female and two males). Clans are nomadic, living in fur huts and moving from one sight to another larger site when the winter comes as they follow the game to other areas. This changing of location often lead to disputes between other clans and barbarian tribes, on more then one occasion this has lead to open warfare. Frostclaw encountered in southern lands are commonly outcasts. Religion: Frostclaw Panynx revere The Goddess Laenya, The Great Pride Mother, as all panynx do. They also worship, human gods of battle. Language: Frostclaw speak Panynx, a flowing language that is composed of rolling R’s and long A’s, to people that are unfamiliar with the language it can sound a lot like roars and growls. Names: When a Panynx is born they are given a name by their father. The child goes by this name until adulthood and completion of some task put forth by the elders, at that time the clan elders choose a new name for them. This name usually has some significant meaning, such as it may refer to physical features, area feature, or great moments in their life. Elder names are sometimes composed of a noun and a adjective or may contain two nouns or two adjectives, example: Whiteclaw (male) or Winterdancing (female). Male Names: Bravun, Clawain, Grelaw, Hilacker, Leowl, Reng, Smokane, Strouncer, Treadow. Female Names: Avriel, Belluna, Dounce, Goldhaze, Grepaw, Mistail, Moondana, Nyur, Purana, Elder Names: Clawice (male), Snowtracker (female), Whiteclaw (male), Frostymane (female), Winterdancing (female), Bluefang (male), Icyeyes (female), Blizzardpouncer (male). Clan Names: Prides are named after the leader of the clan’s Elder name, most Panynx when introducing them selves will state their name, their clan’s name and the area that they come from, Example: “I am Strouncer, Clawice of the Blizzardpouncer clan of South Snow”, or they could introduce themselves simply as “Strouncer Clawrain”. Adventurers: Frostclaw take up the adventuring life most often out of a desire to see and explore land that are not their own or hunt game not found in their lands. Most travel abroad to grow in strength and skill so that he can one-day lead his own clan or challenge a current leader. Sometimes a frostclaw has been exiled from his clan often this happens when they break clan tradition, if a clan leader fears that the frostclaw is or could become a threat to his supremacy. |
| Grizzled Gryphon11-24-07, 06:15 PM | Nice race. What do they look like, though? They have fur AND hair? That seems a little odd. |
| JarionSilverblades11-24-07, 06:30 PM | Glad you like it, I haven't done a pic of the Frostclaw, but here's a pic of the standared Wildmane Panynx Basic Female Panynx, http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z235/JarionSilverblades/Female_Panynx.jpg |
| HernetheHunter11-24-07, 09:08 PM | Thundercats! HO!!!!! No, I like it. Just one thing, which is probably just me, Frostclaw and Wildmane seem like tribe/clan names rather than subspecies. I know. Better sounding than most D&D naming conventions and all that. Panynx, Plain Panynx, Glacial Panynx, Marshland Panynx, Sea But I do like. |

The race was inspired by Thundercats, also I created a Snarf (PEACH) race. Wildmane and Frostclaw are the names of the sub-races, like Lightfoot and Tallfellow are the names of the halfling sub-races. Wildmane are the most common panynx. There are also Stonefang (Mountain/Cave), Dawneye (Magic), and Shadowmaul (Evil/Think Drow). |
| JarionSilverblades11-26-07, 12:58 PM | I still need feedback, my friend will be starting his campaign Wednesday, and we need it for when we roll up characters. Or is the race already balanced. |
| Grizzled Gryphon11-26-07, 04:45 PM | There really isn't much to critique, here. The race is sound and there is no errors that I (or apparently, anyone else) have found. If there are any balance issues, they are sneaky, and will only show themselves in gameplay. This race would be great for a Dragonfire Adept or a Dragon Shaman. |
| Finfreeze11-27-07, 11:14 PM | Hey, it's still Tuesday. So... I'm assuming they need to cast their Speak with Animals spell-like to talk to arctic cats? The language section is a bit ambiguous on that matter. I would've just went the forest gnome route and give them a special language that lets them communicate with arctic cats all the time for free. For what it's worth, arctic panynx come out barely ahead of humans in terms of balancing, thanks to their dexterity hit. Maybe bring the balance boost to +3-4? You could make Cold Tolerance grant a +4 bonus (like the Cold Endurance racial trait of arctic races) instead of +2. Otherwise, it looks...OK. Pretty mundane. Basic Female Panynx, ACK CHEEKBONES |
| JarionSilverblades11-28-07, 05:41 PM | Ok here is the Frostclaw with a bit more fluff. Changes are in RED FROSTCLAW RACIAL TRAITS ● +2 Constitution, -2 Charisma: Frostclaw Panynx are hardier then the Wildmane, but tend to be reserved ● Medium: As Medium creatures, Frostclaw have no special bonuses or penalties due to his size. ● Frostclaw base land speed is 30 feet. ● Superior Low-Light Vision: An Frostclaw can see four times as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. He retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions. ● +1 racial bonus saving throw bonus against Enchantment spells and effects: The close ties the panynx hold to nature, while weaker in the frostclaw, still make them harder to control. This ability counts as if a Frostclaw Panynx had the Cold Endurance feat for purpose of fulfilling prerequisites for other feats or prestige classes ● +2 racial bonus on Hide and Survival checks: Frostclaws are skilled hunters. ● +2 racial bonus on balance check: While not as agile as their wildmane kin, Long hours on the icy tundra have given Frostclaws uncanny balance. ● Automatic Languages: Common and Panynx. Bonus Languages Dwarven, Giant, and Orc. Frostclaw commonly know the languages of their enemies and allies.
