| warforgedMonkey02-08-07, 11:55 AM | I thought that since gnomes and dwarves are so good friends they sometimes breed, and i made racial traits for their offspring. gnome - dwarf * +2 con, -2 strength * Small: As a small creature, a Gnome-Dwarf gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but he uses smaller weapons than humans use, and his lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of a Medium character. * Gnome-Dwarf land speed is 20 feet. * Low-Light Vision: A gnome-dwarf can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchligt, and similar conditions of poor illumination. He retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions. * Stonecutting: this ability grants a Gnome-Dwarf a +1 racial bonus on search checks to notice unusual stonework, such as sliding walls, stonework traps, new construction (even when built to match the old), unsafe stone surfaces, shaky stone ceilings and the like. Something that isn’t stone but disguised as stone also counts as unusual stonework. A Gnome-Dwarf can use the search skill to search for stonework traps as a rogue can. * +1 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, spells and spell-like effects: Gnome-Dwarves are fairy hearty and have some innate magic resistance. * + 2 racial bonus on ALL Craft checks. Gnomes and Dwarves are exelent crafters so when Gnome-dwarves grow up they are often around forges and labratories. * +1 racial bonus on attack rolls against kobolds and goblinoids (including goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears); Both Gnomes and Dwarves battle these creatures frequently and practice special techniques for figthing them. * +4 doge bonus to Armor Class against monsters of the giant type (such as ogres, trolls, and hill giants); This bonus represents special training that both Gnomes and Dwarves undergo, during wich they learns tricks that previous generations developed in their battles with giants. Any time a creature loses its Dexterity bonus ( if any ) to Armor Class, such as when it's caught flat-footed, it loses oits dodge bonus, too. The Monster Manual han information on wich creatures are of the giant type. * Dwarven Blood: For all effects related to the race, a Gnome-Dwarf is considered a dwarf. Gnome-Dwarves, for example, are just as vulnerable to special effects that affect dwarves as their dwarf ancestors are, and can use magic items that are only usable by the dwarves. However some magic devices (like for crafting metal and stone), may need the Gnome-Dwarf to embrace their “Dwarven Roots” before the item works to its full potential (at the DM’s discretion). * Gnomish Blood: For all effects related to the race, a Gnome-Dwarf is considered a gnome. Gnome-Dwarves, for example, are just as vulnerable to special effects that affect gnomes as their gnome ancestors are, and can use magic items that are only usable by the gnomes. * Automatic Languages: Common, Dwarven if he grew up in a dwarven society or Gnome if he grew up in gnomish society. Any comments on this will be gr8. Is there anything missing? To powerful? |
| JarionSilverblades02-08-07, 12:10 PM | One of the really great things about creating a half-gnome/half-dwarf is that they have a lot of traits in common, or very close. I like the fact they retain the small size, and a lot of abilities. I think they should have darkvision instead of low-light vision, darkvision can be used whether light is present or not, low-light vision requires some light source. One thing I have to mention has to do with the dwarven and gnomish blood, I posted a half breed race a few days ago Orc-elves, and halving to racial blood lines is a little much. |
| Dragonbait02-08-07, 12:24 PM | A little side note: Stonecunning, not stonecutting. I made the same mistake for years. |
| warforgedMonkey02-08-07, 12:26 PM | Yes.. the bloodlines are a little much.. The main reason i made this race is the huge amount of racial traits that dwarves and gnomes have in common. =) They are both trained in battle against kobolds and goblinoids and to dodge attacks from giants. But my favorite is that they are both exelent crafters. makes a good artificer in eberron huh? =) |
| Real_iceman02-08-07, 12:31 PM | Nice...... hey hjörtur can you play this saturday ? |
| JarionSilverblades02-08-07, 12:34 PM | With having two racial bloods, the real problem arises when you get into the Paragon and other race specific Prestige classes. Also the +1 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, spells and spell-like effects, to me should be +1 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, Illusion spells and illusion spell-like effects. This way it combines a trait from both races into a new one. |
| Adrian_Crane02-08-07, 12:59 PM | Hm...maybe a catchier name. Drome? Dwome? GNORF! XD |
| warforgedMonkey02-08-07, 01:11 PM | that makes sense.... Now the name is GNORF!!.. haha instead of +1 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, spells and spell-like effects. its gonna be +1 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, Illusion spells and illusion spell-like effects. darkvision instead of low-light vision and.. aging effects: same as gnome. favored class: Fighter if he grew up in a dwarven society or Bard if he grew up in gnomish society. names: A dwarven name if he grew up in a dwarven society or a gnomish name if he grew up in gnomish society. physical description: Gnorf's stand about 3 to 4 feet tall and weigh about 60 to 150 pounds. Gnorf men are slightly taller than gnorf women. Gnorf skin tone, hair and eye color depends on wich parent the gnorfs resembles more and they prefer light earth tone color for clothing. |
| JarionSilverblades02-08-07, 02:03 PM | If you still want the Gnome/dwarf blood, try using this. GNORF BLOOD TIES (racial feat) Sometimes an Gnorf finds a deeper connection with one of it’s parent races. Prerequisites: Gnorf, must be taken at 1st level. Benefits: The Gnorf has a particularly strong connection to one of their parent races. Choose either gnome or dwarf. The Gnorf now counts as that race for any situation based upon race including, but not limited to, Prestige classes, racial magic items, and spell effects. In addition, a Gnorf who chooses gnome gains Spell-like ability: speak with animals (borrowing, duration 1 min), while a Gnorf who chooses dwarf gains Sturdy: A Gnorf suffers no penalty to movement speed when wearing medium armour. He still suffers the normal penalty for wearing heavy armour. Normal: Without this feat an Gnorf is considered neither an dwarf nor an gnome, and there for not eligible for race specific classes, feats, magical items or weapons, and spells. Special: This feat may not be taken multiple times, once the parent race is chosen it may not be changed. I can't remember the name of the dwarf trait that keeps them from losing speed while wearing armor. The idea behind BLOOD TIES goes to enygmatic_me, I only changed the wording a little. |
| nightside_samurai02-08-07, 03:44 PM | There's already a Gnome/Dwarf cross in Dragonlance, they're called Gully Dwarves and they are fun if yucky. I like this one for gameplay purposes and the Gully Dwarf for flavor. |
| AMGriffin02-08-07, 04:28 PM | It seems underpowered. and it should count for BOTH dwarf and gnome, the two races get along famously and there's no reason why they wouldn't be welcome amongst both parent races. Right now it just seems like a watered down dwarf. |
| Elemental_Elf02-08-07, 07:44 PM | I agree, the Gnorf should count as being a Gnome and a Dwarf. It seems weird to deny a Gnorf the ability to be a Dwarven Defender while at the same time allowing it to be a Maester. To me the Gnorf should be the complete blend of the Gnome and the Dwarf, meaning it should count as being both both. Imagine the various combinations that could be born with the Gnorf! Actually I really like this idea. Gnorfs will be amazing to play. :) |
| AMGriffin02-08-07, 09:27 PM | Yeah, truly. Half-elves and Half-orcs aren't denied access to human or elven/orcish prestige classes (for the most part) |
| warforgedMonkey02-09-07, 09:23 AM | im not saying that the gnorf is left with either parent like the half-orc. just that if he grows up with dwarves or gnomes. |
| AMGriffin02-09-07, 04:36 PM | I didn't say you were. I was just questioning denying Dwarf/Gnome crossbreeds both halves of their hertiage, and especially having to make them choose a freaking feat. They're already quite underpowered as is. |
| warforgedMonkey02-12-07, 01:02 PM | ok these are the final racial traits for the gnorf.. gnorf * +2 con, -2 strength * Small: As a small creature, a Gnorf gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but he uses smaller weapons than humans use, and his lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of a Medium character. * Gnorf land speed is 20 feet. * Darkvision: Gnorf's can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but is otherwise like normal site, and gnorf´s can function with no light at all. * Stonecunning: this ability grants a Gnorf a +1 racial bonus on search checks to notice unusual stonework, such as sliding walls, stonework traps, new construction (even when built to match the old), unsafe stone surfaces, shaky stone ceilings and the like. Something that isn’t stone but disguised as stone also counts as unusual stonework. A Gnome-Dwarf can use the search skill to search for stonework traps as a rogue can. * +2 listen; Gnomes have keen ears, and gnorf's get this from their gnome parent. * +2 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, Illusion spells and illusion spell-like effects: Gnorf's are fairy hearty and have some innate magic resistance. * + 2 racial bonus on ALL Craft checks. Gnomes and Dwarves are exelent crafters so when Gnorf's grow up they are often around forges and labratories. * +1 racial bonus on attack rolls against kobolds, orcs ( including haf-orcs ) and goblinoids (including goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears); Both Gnomes and Dwarves battle these creatures frequently and practice special techniques for figthing them. *aging effects: same as gnome. *favored class: Fighter if he grew up in a dwarven society or Bard if he grew up in gnomish society. *names: A dwarven name if he grew up in a dwarven society or a gnomish name if he grew up in gnomish society. *physical description: Gnorf's stand about 3 to 4 feet tall and weigh about 60 to 150 pounds. Gnorf men are slightly taller than gnorf women. Gnorf skin tone, hair and eye color depends on wich parent the gnorfs resembles more and they prefer light earth tone color for clothing. * Automatic Languages: Common, Dwarven if he grew up in a dwarven society or Gnome if he grew up in gnomish society. and when i say that he grew up in a dwarven or gnomish society im not saying that the gnorf is left with either parent. just that he grows up with either race ( and both the parents ). so.. you like? |
| Real_iceman02-12-07, 01:51 PM | i like it, if you want to have it in our campaign you will have to accept that whisper gnomes are +1 LA :D |
| gullas02-12-07, 02:00 PM | gnorf lol hjörtur:P......could be fun to play ,mabey I'll play it next time I make a car:)... |
| JarionSilverblades03-08-07, 08:22 PM | ok these are the final racial traits for the gnorf.. gnorf * Gnorf land speed is 20 feet. Do they keep their Dwarf parents ability to not lose speed while wearing Medium or Heavy armor. |
| AMGriffin03-08-07, 08:34 PM | I'm seriously borderline right now. Give them something all their own, to set them apart with dwarves and gnomes. You could probably do away with the Strength penalty and maybe lower some of their bonuses to +1. Also: Give them BOTH dwarven and gnomish blood, don't make them choose. |
| nighttree03-08-07, 09:29 PM | Just as an FYI....DL setting has a Gnome/Dwarf hybrid race. They are called Aghar (also known as Gully Dwarves), although they are a far step from what you are going for :D |
