05-17-07, 12:12 PM I was comparing the criterion, "To make an item using Craft (alchemy), you must have alchemical equipment and be a spellcaster," with the descriptions in CArc of creatures using sla's to qualify for feats, PrC's, etc., and wasn't sure the best way to interpret it for the craft (alc) skill.

Do a gnome's spell-like abilities qualify him to use craft (alchemy) even if he has no levels in a class with spellcasting?

05-19-07, 06:34 PM Oooh, good question. This is subject to DM interpretation. I would say yes, this really only affects gnome nonspellcasters (though it extends to monsters too).

The gnome's bonus in alchemy is because of their sensitive noses apparently, this does not alow them to create items magical in nature.

05-19-07, 08:12 PM i would totally say that they do: otherwise, all the other gnomes that are not spellcasters would totally lose out on this talent, and instead of gnome inventers, the world would rave about "that curious old gnome wizard that made this thingy for me".

to do away with this possibility would destroy the image of a non-magical gnomish chemist/inventer. the world is a sadder place without that little man.

Craft (Alchemy) can be taken as a skill, but at different levels for different classes.
Casters: Whenever. Also, same for spell-like ability possesors.
Non-Casters: Those with many Supernatural abilities or Use Magic Device as a skill on thier list may have Craft (Alchemy), albiet they can only have half as many ranks.
Experts: For some reason, they can just use it. Both the Generic and the NPC class.

05-22-07, 03:39 PM Actually Gnome's favored class is Bard now (Wich is an arcane spellcasting class technically) They still have the bonuses to illusion, but they decided to give bard a natural race instead of there being two wizard natural races.
I made a Gnomish Bard/Rogue last night.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking but wasn't 100% sure having a caster level qualified as meeting the criterion, "must be a spellcaster"... I had someone argue the precise semantics with me.
