| Mr_Sandman06-25-07, 12:02 AM | Ive wanted to be a vampire PC since pretty much always, but everyone is bashing them for their inability to work in sunlight, cross waters, or enter private residences. So, lets discuss how they would be GOOD as a PC. Some simple rules------- 1. Please dont say they are terrible. This is a thread for the GOOD things. 2. Dont state generic things like their strength or superpowers. Be creative. 3. None of the following---- Bacon, Cuck Norris, the 5.7 round 4. Stay on topic. This is about the MM3.5 template and its unmodified uses. Have fun guys! |
| claypigeons06-25-07, 01:16 AM | Ive wanted to be a vampire PC since pretty much always, but everyone is bashing them for their inability to work in sunlight, cross waters, or enter private residences. So, lets discuss how they would be GOOD as a PC. As a player, you have be very creative. You have to know how your DM is going to handle things as well. Does a dungeon inhabited by trolls count as a "private residence"? It's things like that that will break or make your fun in such a campaign. Also... be sure to play a melee based character. Casters generally suffer greatly from being a race with an LA. Vampires have a hefty one, so it will likely cripple you. Playing a vampire might be fun, but in a combat heavy game, you might suffer a bit, having so few hitpoints campared with other fighters. You might the Half-Vampire template from Libris Mortis. It is designed to be used, and has only a +2 level adjustment. It's a good substitute for a lower starting level, and for folks that just want the vampire flavor without the full blown +8 LA. |
| Mr_Sandman06-25-07, 03:12 AM | I agree it is important to know what is considered a private residence, as well as guage the caster strength versus melee. Personally, i was going for the whole dextrous fighter thing, given the high dexterity and strength of a vampire. I figure the spiked chain might be appropriate. Basically the vampire is the only option for a powerful human-looking character. |
| demoniciron06-25-07, 03:31 AM | well u do get a army right |
| Ecalsneerg06-25-07, 08:10 AM | well u do get a army right If you're talking about Warhammer, that is very different to D&D. If you're not, what ARE you talking about? |
| Soulless_Enigma06-25-07, 08:33 AM | I think he's talking about all the spawn you can get. |
| Omega_Grey06-25-07, 08:46 AM | Good things about a vampire 1)Fast Healing 5, because we all love rapidly healing damage for free 2)Level Draining Slam attack, Ogre Barbarian sunder your weapon, have no fear, now you can unleash your true strength on him (and get that free healing we all love, as well as the whole level drain thing) 3)Spider Climb, Imagine all the fun you can have hanging from ceilings 4)Even if you die you dont die. You just have to make sure you arent too far from your coffin. I could go on, but I think I've said enough for now. |
| Moldiver06-25-07, 09:28 AM | 1)When the rest of the party is at 5th level or above, the vampire can kill them all and the whole group can be vampires, even stronger than the original. 2)No party conflicts when the vampire can just dominate them to their way of thinking. (Unless he has done the above) 3)Springing traps is easier with the Children of the Night ability, just don't sent them all through at the same time. 4)When your DM tires of your vampire PC, all he has to do is have a tree fall on your character, a branch stabbing him through the heart. One bad thing about a vampire PC though, you have to watch out for water traps, especially if your DM is tired of your PC, those walls might have a force effect. |
| EvilVegan06-25-07, 09:30 AM | Fast Healing and Damage reduction make up a lot for HP, but not 8 levels worth of Hit points. Turn resistance also helps make up for lack of HD, but only half as much as the LA. Other than these obvious and devestating drawbacks they do have some nice options. If it isn't a private residence there is very little a vampire needs to worry about when entering anywhere. Being able to become gaseous is awesome in almost every way. The party doesn't need a rogue or a healer or a summoner. They only really need attack bonuses. Barbarians and warblade are good choices, especially when using their slam attack + maneuvers. 2 levels drained on a martial strike is pretty sweet. I'd recommend picking up libris mortis. |
| katarl06-25-07, 03:19 PM | ... well i guess they're... uh, strong... ish ... and you can get... uh, wolves to help you... and... their level adjustment is... uh... not *that* bad... (mutters something about it being a race only emo-noobs would actually play) its got, uh, good roleplay opportunities... (mutters something derisive of vampire-the requiem players, and their sexual orientation) And being able to cross running water... or enter a house... or enter sunlight is overrated. Who eats garlic, right? |
| RobbyPants06-25-07, 04:08 PM | Good things about standard MM 3.5 vampires: They are very versitile. Their natural stealthy abilities tend to make them good rogues. With the LA penalty, you'll probably want to shy away from primary casteres, and with the BAB and HP drop you'll get for the LA (and lack of a Con score), you'll lack some tanking abilities. Still, they get a healthy Dex bonus, as well as several definsive features (fast healing, damage reduction, natural armor bonus) as well as good skill boosts and a lot of nice feats. I would reccomend playing a rogue (or rogue-like) character. Play up on some strengths they have. You don't need to worry about Move Silently checks when you're gaseous! You won't have much trouble entering a private dwelling if you dominate the owner. They're good at picking up some potential allies with their domiate powers. In general, you can deal with the high Fort/low Will fighters with the dominate ability, and the low Fort/high Will casters with your energy drain. |
| lord_xarallon06-25-07, 04:09 PM | You don't have to worry about killing the vampire PC. Have tried it. |
| Mr_Sandman06-25-07, 04:17 PM | Well, i have to say the idea of dominating th houses owner is a great strategy. And they do get kick ass skills and feats. BTW, please stay on topic, and dont bash vampires. You want to do that, then do it somewhere else. Robbypants has the right idea for this thread, while Katarl is a shining example of what NOT to do here. |
| Babzidu06-25-07, 04:19 PM | Um, they....uhh....wait a minute, it's coming....um. Ooh, got it! Vampires have great roleplaying opportunities! ...sort of. If your being a jerk, it's really easy for your party to kill you. If you have a rakshasa party member, he can disguise himself and hit the town, looking for some victims with his read thoughts and spells. Then you can feed on the victim, and he can steal all the cash and magic items. That would be a great party.;) |
| The_Shaman06-25-07, 05:04 PM | I think being a rogue is a good idea, as it allows you to boost your social skills. Sure, you might not be that tough, or a great caster... but with enough minions, you can do a lot. This is, unfortunately, why vampires are better BBEGs - few PC have patience with the niceties of intrugue, but THERE a vampire is nearly unmatched. |
| snakeman83006-25-07, 05:09 PM | A grappling vampire is a deadly vampire. 2 negative levels + blood drain for when they're pinned a round? Sounds good to me! (plus you get the 15 temp hp) Blood Drain does not take an action, so if you've got your opponent pinned, they lose 1D4 Con and the proper number of hp. Slam them (since it is a natural weapon and all natural weapons are considered light, therefore, you can use them in a grapple), and they take more damage + gain two negative levels. That's a painful swing in your favor combat-wise. (remember that those negative levels also make it easier for you to keep them pinned) Go rogue, sneak up on them, and get the jump to begin the above strategy. Your allies can take care of other opponents, just make sure to pick up Improved Grapple and also to grab the toughest foe. EDIT: Actually, for the above straegy, go Monk instead. You can get IG as a bonus feat, plus you gain lots of abilities that compliment your natural ones quite nicely. In addition, they get all the stealth skills as class skills. |
| Dragonprime06-25-07, 06:58 PM | If you get improved grapple then you will be able to drink the blood of your enemies with ease. If you happen to be advancing in a class that has the same BAB progression as a fighter, then that blood will be flowing in no time. Still, if your DM perfectly knows all the things vampires can't do, then it can be a pain to do anything normal. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht06-25-07, 07:50 PM | Create Spawn. |
| Volafor06-26-07, 02:46 AM | One of my NPCs is a vampire bard. He makes a great recurring villain for my group, which is composed of good roleplayers. His strengths and strategies are mainly based in roleplaying, true, but to this day the thought of my PCs entering the local tavern for a drink, only to be set upon by fascinated or dominated patrons, makes me giggle. Ranger is another path that might offer some good opportunities if you wanted your vampire to be a good combatant. I haven't tried that one. Cleric of Nerull, perhaps? Vampires receive bonuses to Wisdom, as well.... |
| Mr_Sandman06-26-07, 05:00 AM | True, but i prefer my victim's blood to be spilled for me, not my deity. Some minor vampire pro's 1. Can use dominate and charm person to get free beer 2. Can use the two above powers to get pretty much any weapon for free 3. Bar fights usually end when the two jerks with the pool cues go up against 32 patrons under the vampire's control Ways to overcome vampire weaknesses 1. Water is easily overcome by having the other PC's carry you in your coffin over the water. 2. Any competant DM would allow a vampire to cover himself completely and survive in sunlight. A full helm and a nice suit of armor should work for a fighter, and a nice cloak should work for magi. 3. Do you know anyone who carries around garlic just for the hell of it? 4. Holy symbols present a problem, but can be easily overcome by using ranged or reach weapons, thus avoiding the bearer of the symbol. |
| goawayugh06-26-07, 08:04 AM | Vampires are good as PC's because......um......um....um.....wait, there are good things about a vampire PC?!? Serious though, there are a FEW good things. Dominate, gaseous form, crazy stat/skill bonuses. Ok, I'm done. |
| RobbyPants06-26-07, 08:48 AM | One thing to be careful about if you're a grappler: Remember that a vampire has a +8 LA. This will hurt their BAB quite a bit (which, ultimately hurts their grapple modifier). About half of this is made up with their solid Str boost. Just as a warning, don't expect your vampire PC grappler to hold up to a dedicated fighter, or even monk, grappler of equal level. Not that I'm trying to complain about vampires (I love them), but I wanted to remind you of that. A vampire's grappling and blood drain can be great in the right circumstances. Heck, it's a good way to pick up some temporary HP before a battle. Just be careful who you grapple (is a wooden stake a light weapon? :P). |
| Lionhearted06-26-07, 09:10 AM | 3. Do you know anyone who carries around garlic just for the hell of it? Vampire hunters |
| Demon Lightfoot06-26-07, 09:30 AM | The party can whack them for quick experience. |
| Babzidu06-26-07, 01:50 PM | Sandman's vampire pro list brings up a question. Can vampires get drunk off their free beer? Seeing as there're undead and all that. Hmm...interesting. |
| Mr_Sandman06-26-07, 03:13 PM | Well, vamps LA does pose a significant problem. Has anyone seen the vampire template from d20 modern? It allows you to trade off strengths for less weaknesses. Example. Give up the ability to summon children of the night (IE bats and rats) Be able to cross water Give up the ability to create spawn be able to enter private residences without permission You can give up something and get immunity from sunlight, but it wouldnt be a vampire, now would it? This is handy for making an actually playable vampire, but the template itself has a very low LA, 5 i think. |

| lukelightning06-26-07, 03:37 PM | The good thing is that you are a level 5 character going up against young adult silver dragons, glabrezu demons, gheale eladrins, leonals, and 13th level radiant servants of pelor. |
| katarl06-26-07, 03:40 PM | while Katarl is a shining example of what NOT to do here. Damn straight! It is a bit hypocritical for me to say such though, i have played vamps before. The best thing i found was grappling, it scared the hell out of everyone, a fighter type with improved grapple and blood drain. |
| Mr_Sandman06-26-07, 05:12 PM | LA 5 is very low for a vampire. What with the ability and skill increases, and the feats, LA 8 is more appropriate. |
| goawayugh06-27-07, 07:14 AM | Oh, ok. Low for a vampire...yes. I thought you were just saying in a general sense that +5 is low. |
| Volafor06-27-07, 06:33 PM | True, but i prefer my victim's blood to be spilled for me, not my deity. Granted. Cleric would be a decent choice, though: okay BAB progression, divine magic, rebuke undead abilities, etc. I might try this idea myself. :D Thanks for the inspiration, friend. And I hope your vampire PC turns out all right. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht06-27-07, 09:03 PM | The good thing is that you are a level 5 character with an army the size of whatever kingdom you last passed through, plus the three or four before it going up against young adult silver dragons, glabrezu demons, gheale eladrins, leonals, and 13th level radiant servants of pelor. Fixed for accuracy. |
