| Code_monkey09-09-07, 01:23 AM | I rolled up a Half dragon a couple weeks ago,and i can't use him because my DM thinks half dragons are overpowered,He's a warmage(complete arcane)by the way,does anybody have a situation similar to this? |
| Omega_Grey09-09-07, 01:58 AM | Not currently, but I have run into problems such as that myself in the past. Sad to say the only way to overcome said problem is with patience and trust. You just have to convince that the reason you want to play a half-dragon is not to screw him over or to break the game (unless that is what you want to do). Or you can work with your DM into creating what he feels is a balanced concept of the half-dragon. The only suggestion I can give other then this is dont argue with him about it, but rather discuss it with him like a civilized human being. He should come around sooner or later. |
| IdleAltruism09-09-07, 02:09 AM | I suggest doing a quick search or wait a day or two. There are quite a few threads around here explaining why a half-dragon is underpowered and I'm sure there will be at least a few willing to tell you why. Its a little past my bedtime so forgive me for not explaining in further detail, if no one does I'll be back tomorrow. |
| StruckingFuggle09-09-07, 02:24 AM | I'm sorry, but ... he thinks a half-dragon warmage is overpowered? Two questions: 1- What level are y'all at? 2- How long has he been playing DnD? |
| Crimson_Concerto09-09-07, 02:26 AM | Wow, since when are Half-Dragons overpowered? :uh-huh: Are you... Are you taking into account its +3 Level Adjustment? Really, ask your DM why exactly he thinks your character is overpowered, and tell us, so that way we have a better idea of how to tell him he's doing it wrong... |
| StruckingFuggle09-09-07, 02:53 AM | Wow, since when are Half-Dragons overpowered? :uh-huh: Not just a half-dragon, but a half-dragon warmage. |
| Crimson_Concerto09-09-07, 03:04 AM | Not just a half-dragon, but a half-dragon warmage.Yes, I was originally going to go there as well, but the OP claims his DM's problem is with the Half-Dragon, not the Warmage... I can't wait to hear this DM's excuse... |
| Derren S.09-09-07, 03:33 AM | Just ask the DM if your character would be less powerfull if he trades the large strength boost you probably will never use as you won't go into melee for higher level spells and more HP. |
| dragonseth09-09-07, 03:46 AM | Hmm. This probably stems either from a lack of understanding of Level Adjustment and ECL, or an understanding of it, but a misuse, in that you are paired with a party based on your character level, not your ECL. |
| Dog_O_War09-09-07, 04:43 AM | Maybe his DM believes that a more powerful race will out-shine his other players. I mean eventually they get to level 10 right? That would put the half dragon at level 7, and with some proper workings he'll have more hit-points, better spells (as in spells that are harder to resist) because of a high bonus stat - which a wizard would have to heighten in order to match DC wise (and then he runs into a real problem with spells per day). Not to mention the melee capabilities and natural armour a half-dragon has (which when combined with warmage allows heavy adamantine armour casting with the proper feats) giving melee untouchable-ness/par-ing the "wizard" with the fighter in hand to hand. Basically he would have the ability to beat everyone (normal) at their own game. And that's just at tenth level. Just to make sure this is true, I'm gonna make one for play testing versus a regular human fighter 10 and then a human warmage 10 (depending on how it goes, it may go to warmage and fighter versus said character). |
| 1337Ninja09-09-07, 06:02 AM | I can't wait for DM responses. If this goes how it should, then this will be an EPIC thread. I mean, seriously, what the...? And if the DM thinks that it's half-dragon warmages that are overpowered... I can't wait. |
| groveborn09-09-07, 06:21 AM | Compromise by taking levels as a Dragon Disciple. It takes longer, but I promise you'll love it. My Bard/DD was kicking ass in combat, and was useful out of it. |
| j3st3r09-09-07, 06:58 AM | Also Races of the Dragon has lots of options if you'd like to play draconic creature (Dragonborn of Bahamut (race), Draconic Creature (template), Dragon Devotee (prestige class)). |
| dragonseth09-09-07, 12:15 PM | The main reason I think that Half-Dragon is underpowered is the breath weapon. The damage doesn't scale with level. I mean, that damage can really ROCK at low levels, but eventually it becomes much less attractive of an option. Not to mention, the DC doesn't increase with class levels, only racial HD. Also, by RAW, you only get wings if you're large or larger. I have always played it so that you always get wings. And even then it's still a little underpowered with the breath weapon. However, there is one REALLY good use for that breath weapon. Dragon Samurai! I still say that this is a matter of rules knowledge and implementation. |

A Warmage ... Dragon Disciple? ... isn't "worth it" at all. It's good for roleplaying purposes, but for anything else? It's like shooting yourself in the foot before running a marathon. |
