Is it possible for a Lich to breed:confused: and if so, how would that work:eek:

Walking corpses usually cannot breed. There have been exceptions, as there is to every rule, like the Half-Vampire.
I would say no though.

Depends on if the Lich kept up with all of those Gentle Reposes throughout the years.

In the world of D&D (and, increasingly, in the real world), two creatures don't need to breed in order to produce a hybrid. A Half-Lich (whatever the hell that is) could be the result of an arcane experiment, a failed attempt at lichdom, an ancient curse, etc.

Well you see when a mommy lich and a daddy lich love each other very much they call the undead brain eating stork and have them deliver a baby lich. Look I really didn't want to go in details about how they would actually "do it" but I assume an undead could reproduce... Kinda wierd though.

according to BOEXF ,the chapter for undead , its says if an undead somehow maneges to preserve his genetile ,fluid etc its pretty posible for 'em to breed , if it applies to liches to , I'm not sure...

here my out look on it, its an aacquired template, and one some one has to work towards at that. not something that can be done by mistake, like vamp, or were. so i would say if some how the parts where still working it would mate as the base race would, so a elf lich would shot out elf sperm... and a female.. well i have no clue how that would work.. they dont eat so there would be nothing for the baby to grow on.. so maybe it might spit out baby zombie or somethin... is there a template for baby zombie? or embro zombie?

If the lich polymorphed itself back into its human form, or whatever form it wanted, it should be able to breed. My guess is that the resulting progeny would be normal as in not having any of the undead or supernatural traits of the lich. Remember, lich is immune to polymorph cast by others, but can change its own form.

liches can polymorph, but they still retain their special qualitites. Otherwise, why would polymorphed dragons produce half-dragon offspring?

I play a lich at the moment, and my body hasn't aged since the second it died, so it is probably still 'alive' enough to do everything a normal human can. (Praise the lord for Eternal Wands of Gentle Repose.)

However if you want to contemplate the flip-side of the coin, then I feel pity for you immortal soul.

Wow, thanks for the responses. If anyone has the time and enery, I don't, they are welcome to try this out and I would be interested in the result. The only thing I can think of right now is that it should be a template that could be added to any race.

Why would it be addable to any race? The Lich template itself is only applicable to humanoids, and lichfiend only works for outsiders.

Anyway, where are the lady liches? If we're going to experiment, let's get to experimenting.

I guess it is theoretically possible for a Lich to polymorph into a human and breed. The resulting offspring (assuming that the female carrying the child to term was a healthy, living subject) should be totally human - but the necromantic energies present at conception should almost certainly result in some wacky stuff going on. Heroes of Horror has a neat thing called the Unholy Scion which seems to reflect this concept very well - and isn't just reserved for lich-spawn.

An alternative would simply be to make the half-lich nearly identical to Human, except that instead of a bonus feat they automatically get Tomb-Tainted Soul (Libris Mortis), and their favored class is Dread Necromancer. In fact, I would almost say that they should have to make very difficult Will saves to be anything EXCEPT a Dread Necromancer, reflecting their unusual parentage. Would actually make for a really neat storyline, since the Dread Necromancer eventually attains Lichdom "naturally" it could be a strange experiment - an ancient Lich (perhaps since having become a demilich?) sired a single offspring with the aforementioned polymorph breeding technique, and wants to see if the spawn will gradually inherit his own dark powers, without the ritual. If the child does, then the lich has a newfound source of incredibly powerful minions...

So now this demilich is secretly the source of all the adversaries for the Dread Necromancer and his party, as he simultaneously tests his scion and gives him threats to test against, increasing his power. This process could take decades, but hey, demiliches have nothing but time...

Sorry, I gotta go. Gotta start planning my new campaign. :)

Ya..... only problem is that this "Half Lich" is exactly the same as a human... who happens to take Tomb Tainted Soul at first lvl and has ranks in dread necromancer......

Dosnt really seem to reflect any of the aspects of his progenitor.

Mabey keep favored class as necromancer, remove the bonus skills per level, and give them tomb tainted soul IN ADDITION to the human bonus feat?

(I guess this would basically amount to a human taking a flaw that said "You are a poor learner: You gain 1 fewer skill points per level and 4 fewer skill points at first lvl" Not sure if that is good enough for a flaw though, but you also lose the benifit of a favored class of any so....)

I would say it would be possible, because there is the 1/2 vampire template, and a vampire can breed if consuming a lot fo blood or happens to bite a pregnant female.

I think the best thing is to use the Half-Vampire template as starting point, such as a Half-Lich gains a power or a quality similar (and of course a weaker version) to that of your average everyday lich.

So you mean they would get a 'kind of uncomfortable aura', and a 'arthritic touch'?

All joking aside, what kind od things would they have? Should they become undead? Should they keep any of the DR? Turn resistance?

Although i don't know much about it, the necropolitan template is a kind-of-dead thing, so maybe we could go half and half between them?

I should have specified, the template can only be applied to humanoids. Nice catch:D

The 'Lich' template is an aquired template and thus is not passed on through breeding; you'd be looking at someone who was instead half dead.

Coincedentally I have such a template;

Half Dead
This is an aquired template usable by any living creature (no elementals, constructs, oozes, or undead). It is gained anytime a creature drops to or below his full normal hit points.

Fearful(ex): creatures with this template begin to fear more and more for their lives, often over trying in deadly situations, or simply just turn and run away.

Dumb(ex): half dead creatures are considered stupid for aquiring this template.

Instant Religious Worship(su): half dead creatures often instantly convert to the closest, most helpful deities' religion in an attempt to gain a helping hand in whatever situation that got them the template in the first place.

So what do you think? ;)

Legends and Lairs' Mastercraft Anthology included the Eleti, a race of (usually) good fully undead who create "children" by naturally imbuing one of their bones and placing it within a suitable corpse, which results in another Eleti. These are different from regular undead, in that they usually long for the life they once had, and as such, attempt to help others/prove themselves useful to society as a whole. The race itself is pretty well done, although i'd give it a little tweaking for the sake of balance. If i get any interest, i'll type it up and reprint it here.

Also, Dragon #313 included an article about half-undead which included half-ghost, half-vampire, half-skeleton/zombie, and half-ghoul/lacedon/ghast templates, complete with LA and stat adjustments...if you're interested...
