ok in my sunday game (witch i dm) two of the groups fav npcs just had a kid, the problem is we have no idea what the kid is, due to background issues i just made the kid a human aasimar ( as im hoping she becomes one of the pc's when we skip into 4e) but im still wondering what would the offspring be without god/dm intervention. would she be just human as one of the players says, or would the seed just not take as there to distantly related as another says or should i have made up an new race?

I'd say mongrelfolk. That's basically a mix of several races.

Or maybe not compatible.

As the kid is allready there, I would say it's just human, espacially if she's probably used as a 4th Ed. Character, where the races advance their abilities throughout the whole game.

Or, if one of the partents is actually aquarter-elf or quarter-orc, it could be a half-race of the more dominant demi-human side.

By the raw:
Whenever this happens, the race of the child is the same as the race of the parent of the same gender. Doesn't mean they are 100% that race, just that they favor that side of their heritage enough to use the same stats.

Another good answer is to make the child human. Again, not that they are 100% human, but that their mixed heritage and upbringing, combined with a healthy does of human genes, creates a child that is versatile and ambitious, aka uses human mechanics.

+1.

Also, this makes sense from the genetic perspective of the powerful Orc heritage combined with the frail Elf heritage, then both diluted by half-human blood, that offspring will be pretty similar to a Human.

You could use an alternate Human race from Races of Destiny called the Underfolk. It has some mechanics that could represent a Half-Elf/Half-Orc child.

Another thing you could do is just add the mechanics of both Half-Orcs and Half-Elves to the child. He/she wouldn't be part of an actual existing race, but neither would he/she be part of a new race, because he/she would be the only one. Since the Half-Elves and Half-Orcs are commonly seen as being the weakest, perhaps even underpowered, of all the playable races, I suppose you could get away with it. I don't recommend it, but it's an option.

That's not a bad idea, actually. It certainly wouldn't be overpowered, mechanically.

Half-Elf/Half-Orc/Half-Human (hereafter referred to as Elforcs):

Medium: As Medium creatures, elforcs have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Elforc base land speed is 30 feet.
Immunity to sleep spells and similar magical effects, and a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against enchantment spells or effects.
Low-Light Vision: An elforc can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. She retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
Darkvision: Elforcs can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and half-orcs can function just fine with no light at all.
+1 racial bonus on Listen, Search, and Spot checks.
+2 racial bonus on Diplomacy and Gather Information checks.
Elven Blood: For all effects related to race, an elforc is considered an elf.
Orc Blood: For all effects related to race, an elforc is considered an orc.
Automatic Languages: Common. Bonus Languages: Any (other than secret languages, such as Druidic).
Favored Class: Any. When determining whether a multiclass elforc takes an experience point penalty, her highest-level class does not count.

Something like that, yes. Would they get stat modifiers like Half-Orcs, though? For something that is half-human, quarter-elf, quarter-orc, there probably would be something crazy somewhere somehow.

Roll 1d4.

Result:

1. Human.
2. Half-elf
3. Half-orc
4. Elf/orc hybrid.

As for elf/orc hybrid, it's a combination that doesn't work out very well together.

Roll 1d20. On a roll of 14 or higher, the pregnancy is viable. On a roll of 13 or lower, the embryo or fetus miscarries. (This is in addition to any miscarriage chance for "normal" pregnancies.)

If the pregnancy is viable, the child is born as a half-elf, half-orc. Half-elf, half-orcs have the following ability scores:

*-2 constitution, -2 intelligence, -2 wisdom, -2 charisma
*Medium: As medium creatures, half-elf/half-orcs have no bonuses or penalties due to size.
*Half-elf/half-orc base land speed is 30 feet
*Light sensitivity: Half-elf/half-orcs are dazzled in bright sunlight or within the radius of a daylight spell
*Automatic languages: common
*Favored class: None. All of a half-elf/half-orc's classes count when determining whether he takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing.

Assuming that they are "healthy" as far as half-elf/half-orcs go, they use the same aging tables as orcs: however, most have additional problems likely to cut their lives short.

In addition to unfavorable base abilities, half-elf/half-orcs are likely to carry additional congenital disorders, such as defective heart valves, autoimmune disorders, cleft palates, and inability to digest nutrients from lactose (even in infancy) to gluten.

UPDATE: In addition, all half-elf/half-orc males and 75% of half-elf/half-orc females are infertile.

That's a mistake the guy at CrystalKeep made in transcription, not a real LA -2.

However, I think it would be fine to give my take on half-elf/half-orcs LA -1, but their ECL can never be lower than their HD. If they acquired a template with LA (say, mineral warrior), then they would reduce the LA of the template by one. (A mineral warrior half-elf/half-orc would have an LA +0, for instance. Although mineral warrior is probably a tad overpowered for LA +1.)

I would say that you should take your pick from the human, orc, and elf ability scores and other racial characteristics. Keep adding them on until it looks to be about as "powerful" as a regular human.

-2 Intelligence
Darkvision 30 feet
+2 Listen, Spot

I like the one that gives them all the abilities of both half-races (since yes, they are both underpowered on their own anyway), and I like the idea of rolling to see whether the kid ends up human, half-orc, half-elf, or elforc.

I don't like the idea that orcs and elves are so diametrically opposed that any child with both parents' genes is disabled and sterile. Although I am impressed by the amount of thought that went into such details as viability and miscarriage, it just doesn't seem like a child showing such unique heritage should necessarily have physical and mental problems.

One question on elforcs, do you suppose they would sleep four hours like half-elves do (that's correct, isn't it?) or sleep eight hours like half-orcs do?
JulesCARV

Hmm... a half-half-elf/half-half-orc (i.e. 1/2 human, 1/4 orc, 1/4 elf) combining the best (rather than worst ) of half-elves and half-orcs gives...

-+2 strength
-Immunity to sleep and +2 bonus vs. enchantment
-Low-light vision
-60 foot darkvision
-+1 on listen, spot, and search
-+2 on diplomacy and gather information
-Automatic languages: Common, elven, and orc
-Favored class: Any

I'd say it's just a bit strong for LA +0, and just a bit weak for LA +1. Sorta like a dwarf or hobgoblin, perhaps.

My take is that if elf/orc hybrids were so viable, we'd know more about them: they'd be in the Monster Manual or something, given that it seems like a fairly obvious combination given that they're both interfertile with humans. At the same time, I didn't want to rule them out entirely, because, hey, elves can breed with humans, and humans can breed with orcs, so why can't elves breed with orcs?

So as a compromise, I figured that it's possible, but only just barely. So I figured that, at best, they're a sort of "negative gestalt" of orcs and elves -- elven strength and constitution, orcish dexterity, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma, orc light sentivity, etc. A few elf/orc hybrids exist. If they're born in orc communities, they're generally killed as infants, though. Elven communities try to give them as pleasant a life as possible given their problems while secretly hoping that their lives are over as soon as possible since they're a burden. (Most of them think this, but won't admit it, even to each other, or even themselves.)

On the other hand, a few exceptional half-orc/half-elves exist, who, in spite of facing tremendous adversity, have done well, such as Nistali Mentok (NG female half-orc/half-elf artificer 9), who, in spite of being born both blind and deaf, proved to be highly intelligent, and, with the aid of her superlatively patient father, learned to create magical items. She divised new items allowing her to see and hear, as well as many other creative, hitherto unseen wondrous items noted for both their economical use of resources and their utility, such as artificial limbs for amputees, magical hearts to pump the blood of those with failing hearts, etc.

I see where you're coming from, and it does have merit. Going with that, it would certainly be something to feel good about if you made a successful character that way, overcoming adversity and all that.

Actually, I remembered a rather unique take on elf-orc hybrids from another thread on the boards:

http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=619562

I think the two most interesting parts of this version are that it relates certain of their abilities to Corellan Lorethian and Gruumsh and that the elforcs get the half-orc strength bonus, but the elven constitution penalty.

Now that I think about it, actually, I would imagine that something as unlikely as a merging of orc and elf blood would have very different results per individual, making me think that maybe some would be born with JulesCARV's crippled variant, and perhaps some with his no-downsides variant, and perhaps still others with different abilities. Hmm...

I would very much like to hear this precedent, because it is foreign to me.

There's two components for it. There's this:

Immunity to sleep spells and similar magical effects

which suggests that Half-Elves share sleep physiology with Elves - they're both Immune to Sleep because they don't sleep, they trance.

The second, and more concrete, bit of evidence was found in the PHBII in a Teamwork Benefit called Group Trance, on page 161.

Group Trance allows team members to "learn the secrets of Elf trance and can slip into a trance state by establishing physical contact with the task leader. This trance state allows each member to gain the benefit of sleep by cleansing her mind and entering a deep meditative state."

The Task Leader Prerequisite for Group Trance is "Elf blood (elf or half-elf)".

Thus Half-Elves, as ruled by the PHBII, trance just like Elves.

If dragons and demons and devils and angels and heck, even slaadi, elementals, rilmani, modron and illithids can produce offspring/fall in love with humanoid races (thus creating half-humanoids and eventually planetouched), I see no reason why elf-orc couples would not exist at all.

Also, that Elf-Orc thread ToH linked to, about the Gothins, poses a quite original take on the combination, but you wouldn't want it if you wanted more generic or different fluff, or merely combine the strong points of Half-Elves and Half-Orcs (rather than Elves and Orcs as with the Gothin in that thread), as JulesCARV did, then you'd probably better be off with personal homebrew stuff.

I know people are crazy against +1 in D20 but I don't really see it as a problem.
Probably would not have darkvision. Probably would need to sleep. I'd say based on my one class in biology in ninth grade, that orc genes are dominate and would be considered orc blood for all effects related to race. Low light vision. Favored class any <--- not due to racial trends, but due to the fact that there are probably almost zero 1/4orc 1/4elf 1/2 humans out their. I'd say that if anything he/she would be mistaken for a comely half orc or just a human with an ancestor who was an orc. I doubt this character would be mistaken as an half-elf very often. I think this blend is more flavorful then just rolling to determine which race they are. Or making them sterile and with birth defects. Also I'd grant them one more ability:

probably a +1 skill point at each level (+4 at first level). They are more human than they are any other race and maybe with the bit of elf and orc blood mixed in they are even more capable and versatile then humans. ( the reason given in PHB for humans getting more skill points)

That's a legitimate point concerning skill points. They do have more human in them than anything.

What you said about Orc genes being dominant got me thinking that you're probably right. Look at it like this:

To begin:
Orcs get Strength bonuses, darkvision, and mental penalties, as well as favored class "barbarian".
Humans have favored class "any".
Elves have low-light vision, +2 on Listen and Spot, and they trance.

Now, Half-Elves get some traits from their human side, i.e. favored class "any", and they also get watered down elf bonuses, i.e. +1 Listen and Spot. They also inherit the elf trance and low-light vision.

Half-Orcs, on the other hand, aren't so much half-human as they are watered-down orc. They get a lesser strength bonus, they get some of the same mental penalties, they have darkvision, and they have the same favored class, this being "barbarian". Absolutely nothing from their human heritage shows up. Zip. Nada. Zero. The closest you could come to saying that the human parent contributed is that the half-orc lacks orcish light sensitivity, so perhaps human eyes are dominant over orcish eyes (but then why the orcish darkvision? Puzzling.)

What does this mean? It means that the orc genes are so powerful that they're beating the tar out of the human genes, making sure they don't come up. Since half-elves get a bit of both parents, this means that elves and humans are closer to each other in the dominant-gene hierarchy. While it would seem as if Elves win out over humans, since half-elves trance, the human half is enough to get rid of the +2 dex/-2 con that pure elves have.

Thus, I propose the following general hierarchy in dominant genes concerning these three races:

Orc blood > Elf blood/Human Blood

This especially concerns physical and mental abilities, since Half-Elves show none of the frailty and dexterity of pure elves, but Half-Orcs show some amount of their orcish blood in their natural inclination toward strength, stupidity, and lack of forceful personality.

Of course, maybe this isn't applicable to all aspects of these races' genetics. Perhaps the gene concerning elf trancing is simply dominant over any gene that would prefer to sleep. We cannot know for sure until we find further evidence supporting such a claim.

Fortunately, it exists. A Half-Dragon/Half-Elf will still trance, even though Dragons have such powerful blood that even a trace of it can instill natural magical abilities in their descendants (sorcerers). If it were only based on strength of blood, it seems as if Dragon blood would win every time. However, the fact that an elf/dragon will still trance indicates that elven trancing is dominant over sleeping.

From the limited information I possess, and from what I have presented above, I propose that Orc blood is dominant at least in the area of physical abilites, and likely in other areas as well, while Elf blood is dominant at least in the area of trancing over sleeping.

Thus, I believe that an elf-orc would trance.

Half-orc + Half-elf = Human.

You have four parts: Half an orc, half an elf and two halves of human. Thus the Human halves will cooperate and defeat the two other halves. Problem solved.

You should have the child(ren) be a half-orc.

Just to MESS with them.

Heck, think about it. Orcs, like elves, have pointy ears. Orcs, like dwarves, are hairy and beefy. With a half-orc, you take away the colourful tint of their skin, nix the tusks, and reduce height a bit, and you're golden.

Anyway....

For stats, it looks like the parent races each are contributing a bonus that the other parent race penalizes. You can either just make it all even itself out and have them get no bonuses or penalties, or, since it doesn't sound like the kids are going to be used as player character races, you could roll a d4 for each potential ability change (+2 Con, -2 Con, +2 Cha, -2 Cha). Any of these that gets rolled as an even number comes up in the kid, and any of these that gets rolled as odd doesn't manifest itself in that particular child.

This latter option would make sense in my mind, since the kids will have different things about their heritage that becomes predominant for each individual. Some of the kids are dwarfishly tough, some are frail like Mom, some came up right in the middle and don't lean one way or another, etc.

You could even extend this to some of the other aspects of the characters, such as rolling to see whether low-light vision or darkvision comes up (I suppose both could potentially come up if you wanted that option...), or whether the kid is ever able to grow facial hair, or what have you.

Thinking on that, it seems like the children will be pretty all-or-nothing regarding facial hair, what with the fact that elves have none, and dwarves have LOTS.

Obviously, things that are dependant on upbringing, like dwarves and their stonecunning, will either be passed on to all or none of the kids, depending on their environment and/or how much dear ol' Dad teaches them. Same goes for elvish auto-proficiency with sharp things and twangy things, AC bonuses against Giants, etc.

Of course, I'm of the opinion that all of the kids would trance, no matter what (see my previous post for support of this position). :D

Anyway, with a group of characters that won't be played by PCs, it just seems like you can be a bit looser with genetic traits, and this reflects the fact that different aspects of one's heritage will manifest in different ways by even related individuals.

A "dwelf" probably would be something like this:

- +2 Dex, -2 Cha, dwelves are agile, but also tend to be gruff-mannered
- +2 to Search, Spot and Listen checks.
- No Stonecutting or Auto-door finding (though you could have it that the child learns either from one of the parents later on)
- Low-light vision and darkvision to 30 feet
- +1 bonus to saves vs. poisons and spells and spell-like effects
- Immunity to magic sleep effects and a +1 bonus to saves vs. enchantment spells (stacks with the general +1 bonus to saves vs. spells)
- +2 bonus to Craft and Appraise checks related to metal. Dwelves have inherited the love of both the dwarves and elves for metalworking and have specialized themselves in it.
- Dwarf and Elf Blood: for effects related to race, a dwelf is considered both an elf and a dwarf
- Favored class: Fighter/Wizard (or any class that combines fighting and spellcasting. Rogue would do nice, too, I'd guess due to some combat ability and UMD as a class skill. It also fits the racial stuff well. Bard would be awful.)
- Automatic Languages: Dwarven and Elven. Bonus Languages: Common, Giant, Goblin, Orc, Gnome, Halfling.

I'm sure some post has already gone into detail about how to do this, but off the top of my head I'd guess the kid would have 2 quarters Human blood, a quarter of Orc, and a Quarter of Elf in him.

Mind if I use this?

Not at all, go ahead. :)

BTW, also added aging, height and weight tables.
