| Belgrad04-28-07, 07:50 PM | I'm making a new race that I'll play, I'm kind of new to D&D, and I'm hoping some people could help me make this into a good playing race... the combination is half Stone Giant and half Human, the back-story would be that 'there was a mad wizard who had a thing for magically combining races together' which would be how the character was born/made(He would retain no memory of his former lives). If you can't tell already, or have never read Goblins(a D&D webcomic), Cain is a character in the comic, and is a half stone giant/half human mix.(Which is where I got the whole idea, really) Anyway, here's the stone giant statistics: Strong, silent loners, stone giant characters are a rare sight in human lands. Stone giant characters possess the following racial traits. *+16 Strength, +4 Dexterity, +8 Constitution, +2 Wisdom. *Large size. –1 penalty to Armor Class, –1 penalty on attack rolls, –4 penalty on Hide checks, +4 bonus on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits double those of Medium characters. *Space/Reach: 10 feet/10 feet. *A stone giant’s base land speed is 40 feet. *Darkvision out to 60 feet and low-light vision. *Racial Hit Dice: A stone giant begins with fourteen levels of giant, which provide 14d8 Hit Dice, a base attack bonus of +10, and base saving throw bonuses of Fort +9, Ref +4, and Will +4. *Racial Skills: A stone giant’s giant levels give it skill points equal to 17 x (2 + Int modifier). Its class skills are Climb, Hide, Listen, and Spot. A stone giant has a +8 racial bonus on Hide checks in rocky terrain. *Racial Feats: A stone giant’s giant levels give it five feats. *+11 natural armor bonus. *Special Attacks (see above): Rock throwing. *Special Qualities (see above): Rock catching. *Automatic Languages: Giant. Bonus Languages: Common, Draconic, Elven, Goblin, Orc. *Favored Class: Barbarian. *Level adjustment +4. Annnd here's the Human statistics *Medium: As Medium creatures, humans have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size. *Human base land speed is 30 feet. * 1 extra feat at 1st level. *4 extra skill points at 1st level and 1 extra skill point at each additional level. * Automatic Language: Common. Bonus Languages: Any (other than secret languages, such as Druidic). See the Speak Language skill. *Favored Class: Any. When determining whether a multiclass human takes an experience point penalty, his or her highest-level class does not count. The character I would be playing, a Half-(Stone)Giant Fighter, would appear all gray, slightly taller then the average human, pure white eyes, no hair anywhere, and would specialize in swords, receiving a large bonus from them, but being much weaker with any other weapon type. And he would be Chaotic Neutral. Basically: *Half-(Stone)Giant *Fighter *Appearance: All gray skin, slightly taller then the average human, no hair anywhere, pure white eyes, strong facial build *Chaotic Neutral *Specialize in swords, penalty with other weapons. I've only played D&D once before, and I hope to play a lot more, since it was very fun, but I'm still a little fuzzy on the rules and, er, stuff. So if someone could help me out here making this into a decent playable race, I would appreciate it a lot. :P Warning! contains (very)minor blood scenes. Enter at your own risk. But it's not very gore-y or anything, or even drawn well enough to be very voilent(I'm not saying that the creator of the comic draws bad). Probably suitable for ages 10-12+, anyway. http://goblinscomic.com/d/20060919.html Just a note; I do not own, or are related to Goblins in any way... And here is what I've come up with, with a magically created half stone giant. *+4 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Charisma, -1 Dexterity. *Medium: As Medium creatures, half-giants have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size. *Half-giant base land speed is 30 feet. *Darkvision out to 50 feet and low light vision *Racial Hit Dice: A half-giant begins with one level of giant, which provides 2d8 Hit Dice, a base attack bonus of +2, and base saving throw bonus of Fort +3. *Racial Skills: A half-giant's levels give it skill points equal to 5 x (2 + Int modifier). Its racial skills are Climb, Intimidate, Listen, and Spot. A half-giant has a +3 racial bonus on Hide checks in rocky terrain. *Racial Feats: A stone giant's levels give it four feats. *+3 natural armor bonus *Special Defenses (see above): Magic resistance (5+HD). *Weapon Proficiency: A half-giant is proficient with all swords. *Automatic LAnguages: Giant, Common. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Elven, Goblin, Orc. *Favored Class: Fighter. *Level adjustment +1. I don't really know what I'm doing xD I don't even know if "Magic Resistance" exists. Excuse the disorganization :embarrass thanks in advance for anyone who can help! ^^ |
| Maraxus04-28-07, 08:08 PM | So, you ask: "I take the Half Giant but don't want Stomp, Natural Psionic and Fire aclimated. What could I get?" I say Natural armor 1 or 2 is a deal. |
| AMGriffin04-28-07, 08:18 PM | ...Are said half-giants in question the result of actual human x giant intercourse? (If so, ouch if mom is the human) ...or are they the years of genetic splicing and experimentation type? If the former, I'd reccomend against creating this fellow. If the genetic splicing type, then I'd say just use the half-giant and replace his psionic abilities with a few Stone giant traits, like Natural armor. |
| Belgrad04-28-07, 09:06 PM | ...Are said half-giants in question the result of actual human x giant intercourse? (If so, ouch if mom is the human) ...or are they the years of genetic splicing and experimentation type? Er, no, neither. I said this in my first post, he would be magical combination of the two races by a mad wizard. I think. Yeah. He would retain no memories of his previous lives. Because of this I want to mix and mash up the bonuses and skills and penalties too, of both races into.. Half-Stone Giants! of a sort. :twitch: |
| Maraxus04-29-07, 03:03 AM | Hey, I think there is no problem with natural combination of Human and Stone-Giant. - My general rule is, that one categorie of size diffrence is possible. Without any kind of magical support, it's likely either painful or borring, but... - ...having watched way too much pron, I can say, that the size differenced in male reproduction organs among humanoid can without any problems be as big as the body-height diffrence between Halfling and Ogre. ;) - And all this does not even considder that a love-couple of Giant and Human uses magic/psionics to support their act. Enlarge person would (for the duration) be only slightly useful without "Permanency", but psionic Expansion/Compression only argumented to 3 pp allows your 3rd level Psi-Warrior to pleasure the big momma half an hour. Tollerance, people. ;) |
| Belgrad04-29-07, 11:16 AM | This is what I've come up with A Magically created, half-stone giant. *+4 Strength, +2 Constitution. *Medium: As Medium creatures, half-giants have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size. *Half-giant base land speed is 30 feet. *Darkvision out to 60 feet and low light vision *Racial Hit Dice: A half-giant begins with one level of giant, which provides 2d8 Hit Dice, a base attack bonus of +2, and base saving throw bonus of Fort +3. *Racial Skills: A half-giant's levels give it skill points equal to 5 x (2 + Int modifier). Its racial skills are Climb, Intimidate, Listen, and Spot. A half-giant has a +3 racial bonus on Hide checks in rocky terrain. *+3 natural armor bonus *Special Defenses (see above): Magic resistance (5+HD). *Weapon Proficiency: A half-giant is proficient with all swords. *Automatic Languages: Giant, Common. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Elven, Goblin, Orc. *Favored Class: Fighter. *Level adjustment +1. |
| Kamin_Majere04-29-07, 12:36 PM | the template looks ok, except for a few glaring parts. The Giant hit Dice has a 3/4 BAB progression, so 1 hit dice would give you a +0 to hit, 2 hit dice would give the +1 Also the saves for (2 hit dice) would be Fort +3, Reflex +0 and Will +0 And your skill points are just huge. Nothing (not even rogues and outsiders) get that many. For 2 hit dice your would be looking at something along the lines of 4 x (2+INT mod) + (2+INT mod); for a total of 5 x (2+INT mod). Since your having to eat 1 or 2 racial hit dice (i would do 2 in this case) i would put the stat mods to +4 STR +2 CON -2 CHA (if you wanted to keep the minus on CHA) So with eating 2 hit dice and all i'd put it about a Level adjustment 1 So total ECL is 3, but not bad when it comes with 2 hit dice. It might be decently strong at lower levels but it would equalize really quickly EDIT: and yeah magic resistance does exist. Its simply a number that a spell caster has to beat in order to affect you with a spell. To keep it an Level adjustment 1 i wouldnt go with anything higher than 5+HD or maybe 10+HD according to what your DM thinks is acceptable |
| Belgrad04-29-07, 12:46 PM | Alright! Thanks, Kamin! I added all the changes you said. :D How does it look now? EDIT: Yeah, I wasn't sure how many SP I was supposed to add, since I the Stone Giant template I took it from was like ecl 10 or something. EDIT: What does BAB mean? And what are the exact words that ECL stands for? |
| Kamin_Majere04-29-07, 01:23 PM | sorry. BAB is Base Attack Bonus ECL is Effective Character Level. ECL is the total of your level adjustment and your racial hit dice. Its saying that your are pretty much an "X" level character if you start off as this. So your first level of fighter would be at character level 4 with this template. I'd remove the -1 to dex. Stat adjustments typically come in even numbers, and i really dont think its needed. You would be giving up 3 class levels to gain this as a race so any more negatives to stats over the -2 CHA would just be overly hurting the template (i think even the -2 CHA is hurting the template more than it needs) Also i didnt notice first the Dark Vision. make it an even 60 (most templates that give vision are in multipules of 30ft; 60ft or 120ft is the most comman for dark vision, only things like blindsight and the like generally are less than 60t) I also didnt notice the racial feats. Your only get 1. You get feats per hit dice (1 feat per 3 hit dice) Something just for flavor i'd give the template the ability to act as a large creature for purposes of carrying capacity. Espically if your not giving the template over sized build (which it might should have as well) |
| Belgrad04-29-07, 01:48 PM | I'd rather keep it at medium, but.. doesn't it seem a little.. strong? I kinda wanted to start out at ECL 1(Or 2, if I mean class level 1 and race level 1), but thats what I get for making a new race :P hell, I didn't even know races and classes have separate levels before this. Or even that race had levels. Does LA affect character level or class level? EDIT: What skill, or feat should I take if I want to be able to drop down from distances and not take as much damage? EDIT: What should I put this "hidden strength" under? :P something that would say I have the large creatures carry capacity? |
| Kamin_Majere04-29-07, 02:01 PM | oh i didnt mean to say make it a large creature, just use the large creatures carry capacity, kinda like a "hidden strength" it would basically let the character be a pack mule with out adjusting anything else. If you just want it to be a LA+1 race your going to have to drop the racial hit dice (unless your DM doesnt care) Honestly for a melee character even the racial hit dice wont matter; as the higher level you get the less a template like this will matter. By the time your 10th level no one will even notice you have this template (espically if your playing with casters that can basically bend reality to their will) Level Adjustment affects Class level. So if you were starting out a campaign at 5th level with a LA+1 race your have 4 class levels. Youd have the experiance of a 5th level character you just would only get the class levels of a 4th level character. As far as this being strong... If you keep the 2 racial hit dice and only count it as a LA+1 ECL+1 creature it will be a bit ahead of the curve until about 5 level, but after that it will even out. And as i said at around 10th level no wone will even notice that you have a template anymore |
