Here is a theoretical question: if a character is born out of a minotaur and an elven parent, and they thus used the half-minotaur template, would they be half-minotaur elves or half-minotaur half-elves?

I'd say use Elves. See Half-Elves assume that the other parent is human, they degrade the senses of the character (Spot and Listen bonus goes down from +2 to +1) while making them more social (+2 to Gather Information and Diplomacy). Unless this is an unusually social and astute Minotaur you are better off using the Elf stats.

That said, if you don't like the idea of the creature having all the Elf bonus traits, perhaps you could create a substitute Half-Elf race with only a +1 to Listen ans Spot but a +2 bonus on something Minotaur are good at. Then again, Minotaur are given a good racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks so it would be a bit of pointless effort but. . .

I thought so. Well, I had plans for a half-minotaur, half-drow, but LA +4 is insane imo.

Well, you could always use the half-drow from Races of faerun. If your DM approves, he could rule that your character is a half-drow/half-minotaur instead of a quarter-drow/quarter-human/half-minotaur for role-playing purposes, but remains a quarter-drow/quarter-human/half-minotaur rules wise.

Go with elves, and not Half-elves. Half-elves are the worst race in the player's handbook. You end up with the same ELC no matter if you use a elf or a half-elf, but the half-elf is just a watered down version of the elf.

Well, the lesser drow (+0 LA version) were one option, but honestly I don't know how much better they are for half-drow, except maybe as thieves and casters.
