Hellbred's brought back to life problem [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm playing a Hellbred from FCII, and they have a Hellbound Racial Trait that could prove to be a problem at lower levels.

They can only be brought back to life by Resurrection or greater magic (i.e. Resurrection, True Resurrection, Miracle and Wish).

My question is simple, are there any other way or ways to bring a Hellbred back to life since Raise Dead won't work? Or will Raise Dead work?

And what about Reincarnate? I know there is almost no chance that I will remain a Hellbred, but I am looking for alternatives here.

Thanks.:ghosted:

Nope. Outsiders are quite clear on what can bring them back to life.

Sorry to disappoint you.

That's okay.

What about Reincarnate? I know I have very little chance to stay Hellbred. And then only at the DM's will.

Resurrection or greater magic. Resurrection is a 7th level spell. Reincarnate is a 4th level spell. 7 > 4, so reincarnate would not work.

That's my take on it.

Revive Outsider.

6th level Cleric spell. Spell Compendium.

Revive Outsider.

6th level Cleric spell. Spell Compendium.

I can give you two reasons why that won't work.

1. They're not Outsiders.
2. It's 6th level. "Resurrection or Greater" is needed. Res' is 7th level.

Sorry, but if you get killed at a low level, it's either new character time, or "Party go on a planar adventure to kick the door down and slap up a powerful devil" time. Look on the bright side though: You don't lose a level and 5K in diamonds.

Well if they're not outsiders then of course it wouldn't work. Was basing that post off snakeman's post. Don't have FC2 on me to check their type right now.

The Hellbred specifically says what can't rez it under "Hellbound".

They are HUMANOID(HELLBRED).

Hellbound (Su): A devil has a claim on a hellbred's soul. As a result, a hellbred can be reastored to life only by a resurrection spell or greater magic.

Hellbound is my problem.

Idea:lightbulb

If I do go to hell ,or some how track down the Devil, and defeat it (gone for good). What happens to the HELLBOUND ability of the Hellbred so long as I live?:help:

you're still hellbound. you have to do some great, colossal act of the utmost good to purify your soul and avoid the Hells when you die again. Simply killing the devil that has a claim on your soul (likely to be powerful enough that you'll have access to Ressurrection when you can defeat it) is not that act.

Now you're thinking outside the box! As long as you find your soul and hang onto it (keep it with the party, or find a way to put it back in your body), you should be fine. Don't let another fiend claim it though. You know they will.

Alternatively, if you actually do manage to be redeemed, you go to a Celestial plane. This means you can be brought back. But seeing as you need to kill Asmodeus, solve world hunger and fix every single thatch roof in Sigil, as well as help at an orphanage... good luck.

I suppose if you became a Dragonborn, you'd lose that feature. But that would involve changing your race and no longer being a Hellbred.

Genetic: Good point. And it does sound like an Outsider, from the description.

Okay, how do I go about finding my Hellbound Soul and retrieving it?

I also don't know which Devil I made a pact with. Only my DM does, but I'm sure it is one of the rulers of the nine planes of hell.

Uh, we're not the ones you should be asking, then. You should be asking your DM. ;)

Although really, this isn't the sort of thing that should be done lightly simply because you want to play whatever awesome race this is without drawbacks.

It's not that awesome. The drawback isn't there for balance, it's there for flavour or plot hooks. This means it'll either be ignored, call for a story arc (as it seems to be doing here) or become relevant precisely once, at which point they go "Wow... hand me a blank sheet, will you?"

To find them, I suggest rifling through Divination spells. If you intend on beating a ruler of one of the nine Hells, you really shouldn't be of a level where you don't have a Contingent True Resurrection. Seriously. The levels where "I can't be Raised and can't afford a Resurrection!" are not the levels where you assault the big 9.

I dunno, I think so. Usually characters with this restriction have some hefty bonuses, like most outsider Savage Species types. Sure you can play one and have fun with whatever special powers they have, but the price is that if they die they STAY dead without extra work/magic. If you don't have it, roll new character.

Advantages and disadvantages. :)

There is a metal in complete warrior that captures souls right? Would that work in keeping your soul from the Nine Hells so that you could be revived via an easier spell. Though if you are an outsider it does not help you much because it seems hat the lowest revive spell for an outsider appears to be 6th level.

Not an outsider.

This sounds interesting though. A way to steal MY soul back from the devil that I pacted with. Hmmm... :plotting: Now where did I leave my soul and mirror of life trapping.

Nitpick: Outsiders don't have souls anyway. They ARE souls. :)

"Unlike most other living creatures, an outsider does not have a dual nature—its soul and body form one unit. When an outsider is slain, no soul is set loose. Spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don’t work on an outsider. It takes a different magical effect, such as limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection to restore it to life."
