I just got Fiendish codex II, but the description of hellbred is giving me headache...can someone explain me what they are???

They are basically reincarnated people who were wicked in their past lives but not quite wicked enough to get sent straight to the 9 hells. They retain no memory of their former lives, and they know they must prove their goodness or be damned forever.

More precisely, they're beings who have repented nearly at the moment of death. I forget whether they've repented before or after it, however, but that intense proximity to damnation forces the good powers to give them a trial run in the world of the living before they can truly be redeemed.

they fight as aggressively as possible against evil, to somehow make up for their evil past, in an attempt to redeem themselves.

they make a FUN paladin. mine looked like Tim Curry from Legend ;), but also wearing gold armor. getting past NPC's first impression, almost always negative, makes things interesting.

things near and dear to their hearts from their previous lives give them twinges of emotion, but they don't really know why. Thanks to their direct exposure to evil, it is fairly easy for them to fall back into it (see sample Hellfire Warlock),
