| turtlemoonkey03-28-08, 02:01 PM | Alright, so in my campain there is a creature who was once a wizard but then through mishap he is now in the body of a clay golem... one of the members in the party wants to make him a cohort and so im trying to find an LA for him, and really a good idea on how to stat him up... Basicly the process destorys most memories, all thats left is just vauge memories and ideas. so really its just a clay golem with instead of a earth elemental soul a real soul. so my problem is this... First i thought of just taking a clay golem and instead of it being a construct give it the living construct type... but this isnt "construct" enough for me as i want him completly immune to crits and what not (as warforge have somewhat disconerable anatomy)... as id prefer it to not have a con score, and all of the benefits/drawbacks form that. i could just take a clay golem and give it sentence but im not really wanting it, even as a cohort to have magic immunity (as thats insanly good and would give it a pretty HIGH la). so im thinking of taking a base golem as a starting race with stat mods of +14 str, -1 dex 9 (or minus 2, i forget how it works with stats under 10), roll for cha, wis, int, con is - +14 natural ac not proficent with any types of weapons and armor 11 HD, giving it 11d10 hp, 7 bab, 14X(2+int) (since it has a mind now but nto sure what to treat as class skills... probably something similar to fighters skill list) skill points, 3 fort, will, ref saves, and 4 feats large size, 20 speed dmg reduction 10/admantium and bludgeing construct traits- except changes here- since it has a mind, is still subject to mind affecting effects (not sure about this, as undead can have minds, and are still immune but i always thought that was kinda weird). -perhaps take note from living construct and allow half healing spells work on it/and full from repair construct spells -not sure what to do about raised/resurection (perhaps orginal minds body?) Loses berserk, cursed wound, magic immunity, haste what kind of LA should it have? or adjustments should i make? the +14 str is decently comparedable to some of the +2/+3 la races (centar, wearboar, minitaur) and they have almost a 3rd of the clay golems HD. the natural armor is alot higher than theres too, but im thinking that the the extra HD mroe than makes up for that as class levels are alot better. the dmg reduction, and more importantly the construct traits is what im really worried about and im not too sure about what to do with as far as LA so im thinking LA +0-+1 but really not sure. as comparing to wearboar we have stats about equal, +8 armor, and dmg reductino 10/silver for 8 hd less, then kinda looking toward the LM one necro undead template its essentially a +0 la to become undead which gives us the 0 con score aspect of the construct and alot of the associated immunities because of it. so what do you guys think? |
| ArochanoX03-28-08, 03:47 PM | Estimating that kind of creature's LA is a horrible task. If it suits you, I think that you should check out Maug (Fiend Folio pg 121). It's an intelligent large construct with similar ability score modifiers you want and an ECL of 5. |
| turtlemoonkey03-28-08, 06:19 PM | i looked at it, but seems ever worse... its +3 in the stat block, and +5 in the as a character description, and since stat block overrides the descriptive text according to the errata. it gives it less str, more dex, and some int (but overall about the same), for 2 HD, SR, pulverise, repair ability, and graph... when looking at stone giant, stats about same (cept no con instead of +8), and the rock catching/throwing are pretty pointless, but thats at +4 bonus... that seems a bit too high for me with 14 HD, but i might be only one... im thinking of putting it at +1 since construct HD arnt all that great (no good saves, poor skill points, really only bonus is the no con score for not having to deal with fort saves, but that also gives you alot less hp overall) |
| ArochanoX03-29-08, 01:15 AM | Now I fell off the track. Remember that the lower the ECL (LA + racial hit dice) the more character levels the construct of yours can have. So if you created a maug fighter 8 it would be an ECL 13 character. Clay golem fighter 1 (11 racial HD + 1LA (your estimation) + 1 level) would be an ECL 13 character too. Personally I would choose Maug. More stuff of LA, RHD and ECL can be found from DMG pg 172-174 Monsters as races. |
| turtlemoonkey03-29-08, 02:21 AM | sorry i was trying to compare them with respect to HD... generally if given to races with say... both having +4 str, if it had 0 HD, it would have an LA, but if it had say 10 HD, then it probably wouldnt have an LA (as the added HD is a drawback) also the maug is it +5 or +3 LA? stat block says +3, the description of them as characters says +5... and if i remember right stat block supercedes the description so it should be +3 right? nothing mentioned about it in the errata. |
| ArochanoX03-29-08, 02:35 AM | generally if given to races with say... both having +4 str, if it had 0 HD, it would have an LA, but if it had say 10 HD, then it probably wouldnt have an LA (as the added HD is a drawback) You're correct with that. Just remember that racial hit dice are added to LA to get effective character level. Maug has 2 racial hit dice and +3 LA for total ECL of 5. That's why Maugs as characters say a maug fighter 1 is equilevalent to a lvl 6 character. |
| turtlemoonkey03-29-08, 03:52 AM | ah the description was right.. i saw the character lvl +5 for ecl, and for some reason when it said ecl i thought LA... haha. anyway yeah i think ima just use the moug, its really similar to what i want thanks a bunch guys |
| Lappy900003-29-08, 11:28 AM | You know, there's a half-construct template in Monster Manual 2. Basically, it's when a person gets a limb or body part replaced with clay, flesh, stone, or iron. On the plus side, the character actually gets a Will saving throw to retain their sentience. If they pass it, they just get a +4 Con and a cool new body part. If they fail, they basically become a NE construct with the traits in MM2. Oh, and the Save DC gets progressively harder with each new body part replaced. Could save you alot of work overall, I suppose. |
