Help me play a Tiefling! [Archive] - Wizards Community

So last night we discussed our new campaign and after a couple of beers we agreed to roll randomly for our character's races and stats - and keep the stats in the order rolled.

So I have a Tiefling, whose (race-adjusted) stats are:
Str 7,
Dex 16,
Con 11,
Int 15,
Wis 12,
Cha 12.

Normally I play humans... so I'm looking at these extras that Tieflings get and wondering how I'm ever going to be able to use them in a way that is worth the Level Adjustment and the loss of my bonus feat! Sure, the stat modifiers are nice, but even so.

With a 7 Str and 11 Con there's no point in my going near melee, which is fine with me as I have two characters in other campaigns who are both melee types. I was dithering between Rogue and Warlock and decided to play a Warlock because I often play Rogues and the whole point of this was to do something a little different.

Is there any way I can put my darkness ability to good use in conjunction with an Eldritch Blast, without covering the whole battlefield in shadowy illumination which will just annoy everyone else? I was initially thinking of taking the Spiderclimb invocation and sitting in a dark corner firing at people.

Other ideas? How else can I use a Tiefling to have fun with?

It's a level 2 start (i.e. level 1). The other characters are a Halfling Cleric, another Tiefling who's going to concentrate on Summon spells, and a Half-Orc Barbarian. The DM doesn't seem too concerned with party balance and is generally quite open to non-core stuff.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions - or even just hints on how to play a Tiefling.

You got gimped man. Tieflings blow. (For their LA anyway). Pray that you can utilize the LA buyoff from UA.

If you have a chance to/have access to, play a lesser tiefling from FRCS. There may be something listed in the PGtF as well, but it's basically a ECL 0 tiefling that retains much of the flavor, including +2 int, +2 dex, -2 cha. (IIRC theres no explicit stat block for it, just a blurb that it does exist and that it's as tiefling, minus this) I think about the only thing it loses are the resistances, which while nice are hardly anything to write home about past 4th level. The extra BAB/saves/HD will more than make up for them.

In general where as the tiefling is considered a horrible ECL 1 race (quite weak), the lesser tiefling is slightly overpowered for ECL 0. If you can, ask him to make all tieflings the lesser variant. Your friend and you will thank him heavily for it, especially as you are both casters, and the loss of that one level for what amounts to a somewhat pathetic return will be difficult for you.

Also, good luck if the DM throws any traps or requires anyone to do sneaking around. I suppose warlocks can be slightly good at it, but still....

Oh well. If you're set on playing a tiefling and don't have access to the FRCS stuff, ask the DM what he could remove or add to make it a solid ECL 0 or ECL 1 race. As written it's about a .5. I'm sure other posters will have answers regarding mechanics and such for classes and feats...

Why don't you just go for a beguiler class? You get more or less the benefits of being a rogue and a spell-caster at the same time. That's how I'm planning on playing my tiefling for this entirely chaotic evil alignment my friends and I are putting together.

It sounds good to me you would be able to cover the party with a ranged attack every round. The darkness could be used to get away if you get in someone's sights.

At higher levels get flyby attack and just use darkness on a fixed point, fly in and out of the darkness and shoot your ray.

Or tell all your friends to get blindfighting.

BTW I feel no pity for your gaming decisions made while under the influence.

Use darkness on a group of stupid enemies, then fire a volley of arrows. Laugh yourself to death as the morons attack each other while you stay out of sight.

Thanks guys - I'm going to go for the blast with shadows to hide in, and invocations like spiderwalk and fly to help me stay well away from the baddies. There's an invoc that lets you see in magical darkness, although it does make the Tiefling's darkvision kinda redundant.

There are also some good darkness-enhancing feats in the Drow of the Underdark book, but I'm going to wait and see how effective the whole shadowy thing is in actual play before I start burning feats. Definitely on the RP side I'm thinking shadows as a big theme. Might even have my EB looking the part too.

Well if you want to talk the DM into making it a level 0 LA and balanced, just change it to humanoid and tack on a -2 Wis or -2 Con.

Repeat after me: Darkness should be renamed Shadowy Illumination.

I think about the only thing it loses are the resistances, which while nice are hardly anything to write home about past 4th level.
It also loses the Outsider type, meaning you can't be targetet by Charm/Dominate/Hold Person. Especially when it's not that obvious that you're a tiefling (read: somehow cover your horns/hooves/tail/whatever), your enemies may be in for a surprise.

Might want to check out the Tiefling paragon on the SRD, and some of the feats from Races of Faerun as well.
