Hello everyone! This is my first post on the races board. Could someone tell me what are the benefits of the shadow template, as apposed to the dark template? I need it for my shadowcaster fix. Not as written, of course, but so that I can know if I could use it. I would appriciate I speedy reply. Thank you in advance.

The shadow template gives more cold resistance, increases the base creature's speed by 50% instead of +10 ft., and gives the base creature a special ability from a specific list (things like DR, fast healing, certain spell-like abilities, evasion, etc.): 1 for every 4 HD (minimum 1).

Thank you. I just need to know how much cold resistance, if you would be so kind, since I know from the times WOTC has used the template on elite opponents that cold resistance is more than 1 per 4HD. Thank you again for this, I can use this quite well.

EDIT: I forgot, what about the shadow blend ability? Do you gain the ability instantly or does it require a HD minimum?

The creature gains shadow blend immediately, and I believe the Cold Resistance is 5 + HD (max 20) (my book is currently being borrowed by a friend, so I can't look it up: check the elite opponents again to see if that's right. If it's not, then it's probably 10 + HD).

The 1 for every 4 HD thing applies only to the "special abilities" I referenced, just to clarify.

Max 15 on the Cold resist, also I preffer Dark because I get HIPS and a Hide boost!
Also do you have to re-blend if you attack, or is it active until you say so/get in bright light?

Shadow blend means that, as long as you're not in any direct sunlight (you can even be in the middle of a light spell, but not a daylight spell), you have total concealment, which means you are effectively invisible (no Hide check nesiccary).
