In an upcoming campaign I have this Saturday, I'm trying to deter my players from being something "pretty", and rather something a bit more feral. One of my players expressed interest in a hobgoblin, but said it was too weak for LA+1. Now, this is true, but I want it to still have LA, which is why I attempted to beef hobgoblins up a bit. Tell me if you think this is balanced.

Hobgoblins
• +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution. Hobgoblins are quick creatures with notable durability.
• Medium size: Hobgoblins are medium-sized humanoids with the goblinoid subtype.
• Hobgoblin base landspeed is 40 feet.
• Darkvision out to 60 feet.
• +4 racial bonus on move silently checks.
• +1 natural armor.
• +2 racial bonus on craft checks related to weapons or armor.
• Weapons training: Hobgoblins lead a strict military lifestyle, and often specialize in unique weapons. A hobgoblin may select one exotic weapon to proficient with at first level.
• Automatic langauges: Common, Goblin Bonus language: Abyssal, Dwarven, Giant, Gnoll, Orc
• LA+1

yes, that looks ok for LA +1. Much better than the LA +1 for the standard hobgoblin.

Your really like goblinoids, don't you Griffin ? ;)

I was about to comment about the Dex and Hide bonus, until i checked the Monster Manual and saw hobgoblins actually get these. I learned something today :D
(but as i don't personally use them in my own campaign, well...).

Are you sure about the speed boost ?
If you want to make them good runners, like orcs in LOTR, or like well-trained soldiers, you could instead give them Endurance.

And instead of the AC bonus, why not giving them a +2 Str ?

Other possible choices for a tougher goblinoid than hobgoblin would be bugbear and varag (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mm4_gallery/98729.jpg).

Keep in mind that the +1 Adjustment for Hobgoblin isn't based so much on what it does, as what it doesn't do: They get two +Stats and no -Stats.

I just posted this under the "Taurens Wanted" thread, but one rule that a DM I played with used was this:

When making a Monstrous character-
** Throw out the HD, Skills, and Feats
** Use all other stats of the creature
** Use the 1st-Level HP & Skillpoints, & Feats of the Class the character is taking
** Divide the monster's usual HD by 2 and round down
** Add number from above rule to the Level Adjustment

By this rule, a Bugbear becomes a +2 LA compared to the Hobgoblins +1 LA.

Normally, Bugbear and Hobgoblin have the same +1 LA and no distinct differences other than... well, the Bugbear is better. Using this rule balances these things out. This rule never applies to Templates as Templates do not have HD associated with them; in fact, using the Half-Dragon Template is a good comparison in the above example.

** Half-Dragon: More stats & abilities than Bugbear, +3 LA
** Bugbear: Less stats & abilities than Half-Dragon but more than Hobgoblin, +2 LA
** Hobgoblin: Very few stats, only one ability (Dark Vision), but no minuses. +1 LA

Voila. Level Adjustments for Monstrous characters made easy.

All in all, I think it's a decent, balanced, flavorful LA +1 hobgoblin.

Depending on your views of Yabathewhat's feature points (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=667683), he considers hobgoblins more of a LA +0. Of course, this is fairly subjective, but I'm considering running standard MM hobgoblins as LA +0 in my next game. Again, if you don't like that idea, this presented idea is a good way to at least make them worth their +1 LA.

Hobgoblins in particular, they're one of my favorite races (Second only to half-orcs).

The speed boost doesn't seem too big, I was a bit iffy when I made it, but Catfolk have 40 feet base landspeed and they're a fairly solid LA+1. In an earlier version I actually had given them endurance as a bonus feat but decided to axe it. I'd rather avoid +2 strength, it makes them too akin to orcs.

If you are going to do this, I would give them -2 wis, as well and maybe get rid of the hide bonus.

I agree that +2 to two different stats with no penalties seems overpowered. Again, I'll also agree that YabaTheWhat's feature point system could be considered quite subjective, and is not official WotC. It's just that hobgoblins get so little compensation in any other area, that he calculates them as LA +0

HOBGOBLIN CHARACTERS
Hobgoblin characters possess the following racial traits.
— +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution. [8 FP]
—A hobgoblin’s base land speed is 30 feet. [0 FP]
—Darkvision out to 60 feet. [3 FP]
— +4 racial bonus on Move Silently checks. [2 FP]
—Automatic Languages: Common, Goblin. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Dwarven, Infernal, Giant, Orc. [0 FP]
—Favored Class: Fighter. [0 FP]
—Level adjustment +1. [SEE BELOW]

With +4/-3 per +2/-2 ability score adjustments, it would be 13FP. Still no LA required.
This rates them right up there with dwarves, and less than gnomes.

Griffin, seeing your goblinoidism ;) , do you have a special version for goblins themselves ?

Actually no, Regular old goblins seem pretty good, they're balanced (more or less) for their LA, if not a bit shoe-horned, they could use a bit more flavor though. Truth be told, I dunno what to give them that unbalances them or makes them too ungoblin-like.

Bugbears I've toyed around with giving powerful build though.

If you're still wanting goblin stuff here's a half-goblin (As in half-human) they're similar to hobgoblins in abilities.

Half-Goblins
Because they reproduce so quickly and are so easy to dominate, goblins make the ideal shocktroops for the aspiring evil conquerer. Unfortunately, goblins are also quite weak and cowardly, not the best traits for a soldier. To get around this problem, some more innovative conquerers and overlords have sought to crossbreed goblins with another race to remove the less desirable traits of goblins whilst still keeping the positive (fast breeding cycle, reaching maturity quickly, speed, agility). Orcs were originally planned but orcs were thought far too wild and vicious, so humans (who breed just as quickly as goblins) were selected instead. The result is the half-goblin, they are exceedingly rare in terms of “natural occurance” and most are the product of selective breeding. In recent years the adventrous human spirit of half goblins has manifested and many have broke away from their would-be masters.

Personality: As a result of the mixture of human ambition and the conniving nature of goblins, half-goblins are extremely goal orientated, always looking for a way to come out on top of any given situation. They’re rather rude and abrasive like goblins, at the same time however the half-goblin is far more bold and brave then his goblin kin, and not nearly as prone to sell out his comrades. He is far more difficult to bully into submission, the ultimate flaw of breeding them as shock troops. Indeed, those living amongst goblins often rise to the ranks of chieftain, using their greater size and strength to their advantage. The few raised by humans are typically very sullen and withdrawn, usually turning to a life of crime.

Physical description: Half-goblins are MUCH larger then any goblin would ever be, but are always quite short by human standards. They stand 4 to almost 5 ˝ feet tall and weigh between 60 and 165 pounds. Their skin runs the range of human colors, thought it is heavily tinted with an orangish palor. Their facial features are generally human, but their face will typically be flat and sunken like a goblin’s. One distinctly human trait of the half-goblin is their eyes, which are ALWAYS a human shade and not beady as goblin eyes are.

Relations: Half-goblins are a total oddity and no public opinion has been formed of them yet. Humans typically react with shock and sometimes mild repulsion, depending on the half-goblin’s behavior they may learn to accept (if not at least tolerate) him or label him a criminal and threat. Dwarves typically see them on par with regular goblins, as do gnomes and elves. Halflings may come to respect their crafty nature however. Amongst half-breeds they get a somewhat better reception, half-elves will not be so quick to judge them and they identify strongly with half-orcs who suffer similar (if not worse) bias. Amongst their full blooded goblin relatives they are usually seen as large and frightening bullies.

Alignment: Half-goblins have no preference for law or chaos just as their human parents. A majority of half-goblins are evil or at the least neutral. Living as servants to a dark and powerful warlord, in a privelged position amongst goblins, or in the seedy slums of human cities. A lucky few half-goblins however are raised away from these sources of corruption and in no way lack the capability to be benevolent beings.

Adventurers: Half-goblins adventure to get away from the plight of their extremely obscure ancestry. Some are fleeing the rule of their former master, whilst others may have been banished from their goblin tribe, being viewed as a threat by the tribal chieftain. Others may be merely wanders, being unable to mesh with any real society.

Racial Traits
• +2 Dexterity, -2 Charisma. Half-goblins possess the agility and crass nature of their goblin parent. But being part human makes them larger and stronger then full blooded goblins.
• Medium: As medium sized creatures Half-goblins suffer no bonuses or penalties due to their size
• Bonus:Half-goblins usually come from one of three backgrounds...human raised, goblin raised, or war-bred. Those raised by humans may select any feat that grants a +2 racial bonus to two skills and their favored class is changed to "any". Those raised by Goblins gain a +2 racial bonus on ride checks, and +2 bonuses on intimidate, diplomacy, and bluff checks when dealing with goblinoids of any sort. War-bred half-goblins are automatically proficient with one weapon of their choice, small shields, and light armor.
• Darkvision out to 60 feet
• +2 racial bonus on move silently checks.
• Automatic languages: Common, Goblin Bonus languages: Abyssal, Orc, Gnoll, Giant, Draconic, Elven
• Favored class: Fighter or Rogue. The half-goblin’s highest level fighter OR rogue class does not count when determining if he/she suffers a penalty for multiclassing.

Is this meant to include Exotic Weapons?

yeah, but it's only one weapon. o.O

Yeah, it sounds balanced, but the flavour seems a little off for things like a Gnome Hooked Hammer. Maybe you should limit it to the Bastard Sword and Spiked Chain.

Perhaps make hobgoblins treat some exotic weapons (e.g. Bastard Sword and Spiked Chain) as a martial weapons.
