Any comments anyone? I'd like to see what people think about this race. Any feed back would be appreciated...

Racial Proficiency with Spiked Chain is pretty uber. It's an extremely versatile weapon that you can use to basically be untouchable. I might step that down to racial familiarity if I'd keep it at all (or at least give a little fluff to explain why in the world an entire race would be proficient with a spiked chain as a weapon [were they slaves that fought for their freedom with the bonds that held them?])... I might write more later...

I agree with jardd777... the spiked chain thing seems... odd. I'd like to hear why the have that... and for that mater, why a scimitar as well.

Like jrad777 said, bump auto prof to Weapon Familiarity (see dwarf).

Ok.. here goes nothing...

The Delithriin were at one time long ago a race of desert elves know as the Shara (also the Twilight Elves. Still around in my campaign). During a huge world war, they took a neutral side and stayed out of the fighting. When one of the larger nations attacked an tried to control the territory the race was split up into two factions, one that worshiped Lillios(Then the race's goddess of Night), and the other worshiping Sivarose(god of Day.) The followers of Lillios believed that the war was not their business and that they should go underground until the fighting quelled down . The worshipers of Sivarose allied with the Humans, and the Ze'evren(wolf folk pretty much) to fight the Orcs, Goblins, ect. After the defeat of the other nation, the races made peace and alliances that hold to this day, but the Twilight elves hated and scorned their brethren for deserting the war. So, he other group of elves came out from hiding and thats how a major civil war started between the factions. It was known as the Solstice wars.

Anyway, The night worshiping elves lost and we're exiled to the underground. Ages went by, during which their goddess went mad and killed herself, thus somehow transforming the race into what is now to known as the Delithriin.

When on the surface, the elves used the chains and long range weapons to fight massive birds call "Desert Slayers" (huge ravens pretty much.) During the travels in the underground, the elves developed fighting techniques against the creatures down their and used the weapons they had, I.E. scimitars, chain whips and bows. After the death of their Goddess, a powerful Delithriin Sorceress named Siilia became leader and later rose to godhood to become the new God of her people. Her favored weapon is the Spiked chain and her followers use it to honer her.

There you go, I like to write history for may campaigns and that was one of the better ones, though it was actually like five pages long...

Now, what do you think?

Good! I like the history overall. Just because of the fact that spiked chain is exotic and ridiculously versatile, I'd suggest bumping it down to a familiarity (the only of these elves that would see a detriment from that are those that tend not to be proficient with many weapons anyway; functionally (just for example), it'd also be broken if you could use this race just to be a warlock that uses a spiked chain, without having to take even a single feat [HIDEOUS BLOW, no AoO! AGH!]). Ha ha, anyway, other than that, they seem balanced overall because it mostly looks like you switched out a few Drow traits, etc, for solid flavor reasons... hmm... they still might be on the lowish end of +1... but I'm not the best at judging based on LA ranges. Anyway, overall that's my take, I might get a chance to think some more and make some suggestions for small bonuses or something.

PS - Nice picture, did you draw it or know the person who did or did you grab it from somewhere?

I was bored and decided to look up some kind of drow/highelf mix, and i found one out of some Thunderhead gaming stuff, non-official splat books pretty much, but they had this pic and liked it.

i might have a friend draw one up though, this one is to drowesk(not a real word) their more like night elves from wow, without the long ass ears and the glowing eyes and what not. you know?

also if you say it's in the low end of +1 then an exotic weapon would make it more mid +1 lvl...

That's partly true... an exotic weapon proficiency would... I also just realized that hand crossbow means they get two exotic weapon profs. Spiked chain seems almost forced and a familiarity also helps it be more to the mid-ish range of LA +1, I would just personally like to see them get some form of other cool bonus, (maybe to help distinguish them more from other elves, especially the drow) though, since they have four weapon proficiencies (+1 to attack rolls against flying creatures? A special quality that activates at night time like Star elf? ...something along those lines). However, it's your work so I understand if you'd still like to keep it as-is overall. Like I said, it does seem balanced for the most part, but regarding the spiked chain... non-martial classes of this race probably shouldn't just inherently be able to use it but I do think that martial classes should be able to really take advantage of it, which is why familiarity would still be amazing.

Right, that's cool, actually, when I saw the picture I tried not to be too influenced by the fact that it looked like a drow and was called dark elf etc. ha ha.

yes, true true....

i guess true warriors of these elves would sacrifice a feat for their god then lol

In the early work of this race a made a sister race, the surface elves aka twilight elves, and i wanted them to match each other. But with a darker touch. I thought about the race gains the use of poison like the assassin ability but changed that to bonuses in skills...

i need a fresh idea with these guys

Ok... I'm kinda going to swipe someone else's idea but you can completely change it around so it won't be stealing at all, ha ha. Someone else made a race that had a history tied to heavy deity involvement and gave the race an ability that wasn't broken but helpful and extremely flavorful (can't find the thread to link you but it was an orc/elf and it had an ability called Gruumsh Eye or something... one of their eyes gave them some neat abilities.

I'd suggest doing something similar, with these guys... I'd really have to think it over to figure out something good...

One thing I don't like about alot of dark elves in DnD is that they have spell like abilities and are better than their surface cousins. Why the hell? Couldn't you just make them as good?

You're right... I, personally, think the surface elves should be as good as the Dark ones, though, not the other way around, heh heh. But I'm partial to elves.

Thats the thing with my campaign idea that i did, i had all non-human races at least
lvl adj +1. That way it gives humans more of a "Natural Learners" feel as they would be a level up an any other race.

I made the other group of surface elves and gave them abilities and a lvl adj of +1 as well. so its not just the dark elves that get cool powers. Being worshipers of a sun god i gave them Daylight instead of Darkness as a S.L. Ability

Im in the work of working on them as well but not as far as these ones

That's an actually kinda cool idea. Well as long as it's not like regular drow where for some unaparent reason they are just BETTER than regular elves.

11-25-07, 03:57 PM
Nope, i hated that concept to, it made playing a drow hard cuz of the +2 level just ain't worth the bonuses...

I also made this race so that my players can play a dark elf type, but not have to deal with the "Drow Renegade" character theme. I hate that.

I have another idea... it's kinda new, too. I gather that you're making a whole group of races or something... what about giving each one a racial trait that increases as they increase in level or HD or whatever. Maybe something simple... for example, if dwarves' +1 to attack orcs or whatever increased by one every 3 or 4 levels. Something like that... but for these guys, that would be cool, attached to their history, etc.

How about this, dropping to light sensitivity(cuz i want them to have some settlements on the surface as well) and lose the spiked chain, and keep the rest, maybe add a martial weapon proficiency feat just to match up with PHB elves.

That seem solid for a +1 Lvl Adj race?

Um, yeah, if you're putting them on the surface, losing the sensitivity is reasonable. Yeah, give them a new proficiency (spiked chain wouldn't even be so bad if it didn't come with so many extras that would make any spellcaster broke-mazing)... in fact, maybe go ahead and give them an exotic proficiency that's not spiked chain... what about an elf weapon (thinblade, lightblade, or courtblade)?

this reminds me of a race my friend and i created a few years ago. your racial modifiers are the same, and even the racial abilities are similiar. this is a well put together race. i think i will just incoorperate this write up (and history maybe even) into my own world, as it is superior to what we created.
I think the 4 automatic proficiencies might be a bit much, but i agree with this statment: then an exotic weapon would make it more mid +1 lvl... i think this is a great way for somebody who might have otherwise chosen to play a renegade drow, but without having them fall behind the rest of the party.

I'm thinking that the auto weapon proficiency might even get removed, that way their more unique compared to the PHB elves. Instead of a cookie cut copy with a different frosting(now i want a cookie.) Im still thinking on that though...

Maybe racial familiarity with the elven blades might be a possibility though...
