I have people telling me about lesser aasimars and tieflings found in the races of faerun book. Well I dont have the book and was wonder, what makes them "lesser"? They seem to have the same +stats and abilities (Which in my opinion make them an overpowered +0 LA race)

I don't need to know what lesser aasimars are, I have the aasimar in the Monster manual. I need to know what the DIFFERENCE is that knocks a whole level off?

They don't get the Outsider type IIRC. Still weak towards abilities that target outsiders.

Really, they are affected as if they were both "humanoids" and "outsiders"...so they are subject to both Charm Person and to Banishment. (Edit, though you are correct that they lose the "Outsider" type, becoming Humanoid (Planetouched)...so I suppose that means they have fewer options when polymorphing.)

Also, the "Lesser" versions are in an appendix to Player's Guide to Faerun. Regular assimar are in Races of Faerun.

Charm and Hold person spells work now instead of Charm and Hold monster.

It also means that they lose their free martial weapon proficiency. It comes with the outsider type, silly as it is.

The type change also bars them from extremely powerful (i.e., cheesy) polymorph abuse. Check out the Kelvzu [MM2, p. 60] for an example form.

Too powerful for a +0 LA IMO. Drop 1 of the +2 scores and they are acceptable

That proficiency applies only to outsiders with racial HD.
I think an LA+0 Assimar is just any LA+0 humanoid with the good subtype tacked on, and the usual golden hair and vestigial wings.

In-game, they are considered to be 'lesser' because their lineage to a celestial traces back even further than that of a 'true' aasimar. So, when it'd come to lineage with offspring that mate with humanoids, you'd first have a celestial, then a half-celestial, then a 'true' aasimar, then a 'lesser' aasimar, although the step from 'true' aasimar to 'lesser' aasimar generally doesn't occur within one generation.

But that's just in-game. For the rest, those who have posted before me are correct.

What book is it in and what page? I can't seem to find it.

Could you back that up with rules, please? I thought it was for all outsiders.

actually, all outsiders are, page 313 of the MM

Only if your DM is focused on following only the letter (not spirit) of the rules to the point of absurdity; otherwise, they never had that to begin with.

How's that? It's the only thing that can help justify their level adjustment.

It was never fixed in the errata. It might actually be WotC's intent. I never understood why outsiders in general needed martial weapon proficiency though. I would have thought it to be sufficient to give them simple weapon proficiencty, and martial or exotic weapon proficiency with any weapon in their entry.
