How do you know what level and limitations to apply to the second creature? It obviously can’t be just anything. Should I use it on Cohorts and/or Followers?

Magic of eberron has good stuff on this, daelkyr halfbloods (a sort of planetouched) can grow a symbiont.

It can be anything that fits the combination. Yes, that means you can have some weird stuff like huge creatures with humans for parasites.

It's not really intended as a player template... which is probably why there's no limitations on what you can put together with it (well, besides types and sizes).

Aren't all humans parasites? :P

It really depends on the specifics of how you've set things up. For instance, if you let the symbiote take its own actions each round (such as a tentacle implanted into someone's back that lashes out on its own), it will be much more powerful than it would be if it merely granted passive bonuses (such as plates of chitin implanted on someone's torso). Could you be more specific as to what you're planning to do?

(Smacks own forehead.) D'oh! My post was not clear.

I’m sorry, what I should have said is that I am talking about the Symbiotic Creature Template from Savage Species. The rules are vague about how I build the second creature. I assume it is supposed to be the same ECL.

There are no restrictions on what the second creature can be except what is listed (type and size). You could pair an epic level something with a first level something if you wanted.

That's why it's not really a player template. :)

This is a case of one of those "it reads as a Player Template (LA and all), but doesn't work as one," huh?

Ah well. :) I do want to make it work. As mentioned before, I've been thinking of using it with the Leadership Feat (or Feats like it, such as Dragon Cohort) to provide the second creature. Does this sound reasonable?

Basically, yes. A similar case is the vampire template. It has a level adjustment; but it really sucks for players. The symbiotic template is very complex to really accurately determine LA and such. You can do all sorts of funky stuff with it.

That's one way to get your secondary creature, yes. You just need to make sure it's within the type and size requirements.

Very true. I'm surprised it has such a high LA with so many extreme weaknesses. It's not just that running water and sunlight hurt it, they kill it, quickly, and permanently.

Yeah. It doesn't mention if Class Abilities stack or not. Are they considered Special Qualities?
