Does the beginning of the word rhyme with day/may/way? or gas/fast/mask?

I say ASS-ih-mar.

That's how I've been saying it, but it just doesn't sound right...

I always think of it as Ay-Ass-Sim-Ar (would rhyme with "bay-bass-bim-bar"). You know, treat the two As as separate syllables.

I think two "a"s in a row have an "awe" sound, like in Baal.

Well, generally, when two vowels are side by side in this manner the first vowel becomes a hard sound and the second vowel becomes somewhat silent. I'm not an english major; just trying to share my logic for how I came to my pronounciation of the word.

feet, sheep, hail, bait, etc.... (there are plenty of exceptions though)

anyway, I came to the conclusion that it sounding like the following:

Aasimar = A-zim-are

or A-sim-are

However, I could understand the logic behind other pronounciations as well. I'm not saying anything that anyone else proposed is any less correct; I'm just sharing the conclusion I came to.

Personally though, I prefer either A-zim-are or ah-zim-are

AY-suh-mar

the two "a"s next to eachother give the long A sound.

I usually pronounce it as: as-ee-mar It would be ass-ee-mar with one a, but think about the name aaron. Its different from aron.

Silly Johnny, assuming the English language has rules... :P

My group pronounces it ASS-i-mar. Which makes the Lesser Aasimar the Half-ASS-i-mar.

Edit: I wonder if this is in the Dragon Magazine Compendium's glossary of D&D terms?

I usually pronounce it as Ae-szih-mahr.

I like the "ae" sound better than the "ah" sound, though I know the latter is more correct. "sz" represents a sound that's not quite an S but not quite a Z. "Ah" in "mahr" represents the Bostonian lilt to my accent, being Bostonian and all.

I also pronounce tiefling as "teef-ling", by the way. I'm strange like that.

You know, I recently looked through my old AD&D stuff, and there's a pronunciation guide in the MC8: Outer Planes appendix (The really old kind with separate pages that you can put in a binder). While there's no Aasimar in there (This predated Planescape), it lists the pronunciation of Aasimon (the group of celestials which included Planetars and Solars) as "ASS-eh-mun".

Now that doesn't necessarily mean that Aasimar is pronomuced like Aasimon is, but it would be weird if it wasn't. It also doesn't mean that WOTC pronounces monster names the same way that TSR did. But it does strongly suggest that ASS-eh-mar is the correct way.

I still prefer to use AY-seh-mar though. (First syllable like "stay")

What, AH-si-ma-ru? I speak a very small amount of Japanese, but don't even come close to reading it. All I can say is that those are Katakana. :weep:

A A SHI MA RU

It is similar to Aasimar but in Japanese is no "si" only "shi" and also each letter in Japanese another syllable but in English it isn't. I think it is close to correct but not quite, because of "si/shi" "ma ru" is 2 syllable in English "mar" at the end only 1 so it is close to how I would pronouce anyways, I hope I helped you.

I generally pronounce it as [ˈaːsɪmaɹ] AH-sih-mar

I use this pronunciation. I see the Aa as a drawn out ahhhh sound, See-Mar as stands. Ah-si-mar.

What it really means is someone wanted a cool racial name and totally ignored that in the English language, that meant it could be pronounced and broken up a hundred ways.

I pronounce it as ass-mart ;)

(No, most of the time I do, when playing tieflings and warlocks)

All other times, I pronounce it ass-im-ar (first syllable has the stress, and rhymes with crass or mass. Not quite the same as "ass" in either British-English or American-English. Second syllable is short, basically "him" without the h, and last syllable is just like car, but without the c).

And I always thought tiefling was teef-ling, never heard it any other way. Do some pronounce it tife-ling or tee-eff-ling or something?

I pronounce it ass-ih-mar.

Really, there are no hard and fast rules on how to pronounce a double "a". Just to take two examples from the Bible, most people pronounce Baal as "Bay-uhl" but they pronounce Canaan as "Kay-nan". At the same time, Indian naan bread is pronounced "nahn".

In this case, since it's just a made-up name, you can pronounce it however you wish.

I, too, say "teefling" for tiefling, by the way, but I have heard people say "tyfe-ling".

I would also pronounce baatezu as "bat-eh-zoo".

Man, I've been wanting to start a "d&d pronunciation guide" thread for a while now ... Anyone game?

You know, the only time i've heard Baal pronounced as "Bay-ul" is in the context of D&d. Whenever christians talk about it they seem to refer to it as Bahl.

Course, the real deity is usually written Ba'al

Baal: In church, I heard it as sounding like the noise a sheep makes. In video games, either sounding like ball or like bale.

Baatezu: I always thought that one was Bay-tee-zoo.

If in doubt just pronounce it the Japanese way:

アーシマル

aa-shi-ma-ru, nice

But as Radiant 117 mentioned... I'm pretty sure I heard Aasimar pronounced in Planescape: Torment. I think it was A (like the letter)-sih-mar. Now, I may be wrong, of course, but it seems to me that by looking at the word I'd say... something else, but I do say A-sih-mar. Or ACE-ih-mar.

Nope. Not in the Dragon Compendium.

And just to add my votes in.

Aasimar - AH-si-mar like Mad Sim Are only without the "m" and "d".
Tiefling - TEA Fling.
Baal - Bail or BAY-uhl depending on how quickly it's said.
Baatezu - Butt TEA Zoo without the "t"s in the first word.
Baator - BAY Tore
Tanar'ri - Tan Our Rear without the trailing "r". Perhaps regional but around here "our" is frequently pronounced the same as "are".
Cyre - Sire
Aundair - ON Dare

For me:

Aasimar = A-zi-mar
(The A is short, as in the A in bat)

Tiefling = Tie-fling

Tiefling - TEA Fling.

What, like throwing around hot beverages?

Heres' my 2p:

Aasimar - Aah-Sea-mar
Tiefling - Teef-ling
Baal - Bahl (Like 'say ah', with a "b" on the front and an "l" on the end)
Baatezu - Baa-teh-zou ('Baa' as in 'noise we tell kids that sheep make', 'teh' as in 'the start of the word tennis' and 'zou' as in 'a bit like zoo, but shorter')
Baator - Baa-Tore ('Sheep noise'-'paper abuse')
Tanar'ri - Tan-arr-Rhi ('sun exposed skin'-'what pirates say'-'Tea with an R')

(caps on stresses)

Tiefling = Ty-fling (like Tie Fighter)
Baatezu = Bay-ah-tee-zu
Baator = Bay-ah-tor
