As a DM I roleplay many races and such.
1. Elven Captain of a elven city, mocking the PC's as they were weren't elves, also for being late with a delivery they were making.(1 campaign ago)

2. A Elven Blue mage telling PC's about blue magic, quite friendly and somewhat mysterious with his art he revered. (1 campaign ago)

3. Elven father to a PC, has his legs horribly scarred from an accident in a battle years ago, he is stubborn, that if he fell, would refuse help from anyone and would try to get up himself.

4. Commander of a village, PC's found out he was actually an Elf, He revered his village that he had formed himself, also betrayed the village in a way. Pretty much was causing a neverending conflict against his enemies, in return gets food from his enemies and thus Village survives. Food is needed as the water is unsafe to the plague in the area.

Wekk, mine was Asian-ish since mine was a Wu Jen.

But I figured my Wu Jen loved the taste of cooked rat. He didn't believe in waste so used his bow to conserve spells he might need later.

He had non-alcohol vow so he went studying in the liabrary on breaks instead of hanging at bar with others.

Basically, like any guy who doesn't conform to others standards. Mostly because he was Wu Jen.
He did think the others were so young (as Elves are at least 100 before adventuring). And was quick to point this out when talking that he was your elder.

I have! I played one in my last campaign (only a couple of sessions), and I'm playing one now (been running since probably last year sometime).

As for how to play them... I dunno. I've never been very good at sociology since I tend to look at things case-by-case.

My current elf does show disdain for the other races, though not all that much. In fact, he was practically adopted by a nice farming family after he saved their little girl from a goblin. He fits in pretty well. He does have a rule about only accepting elven lovers, though (Speaking of which, elves are almost always bi, just so ya know).
The biggest RP issues with him aren't so much because of his race as they are because of the location of his home.
He's a wild elf, and his entire tribe is very, very isolated. For example, he has never seen a body of water larger than your average lake. When he had to make his first trip on a boat, he didn't know a darned thing about the sea. at least someone warned him before he tasted the water... However, once he was actually on board, he got very, very nervous. As the land faded from view, he tended to stay at the exact middle of the ship, going so far as to sleep on the deck every night.
There were a few occasions where he could have been far more helpful. Due to his magical abilities, he has a climb speed. Obviously, the crow's next should belong to him. However, if he were to scale it, he would simply see more of the ocean. at one point, we had fishy-folk scaling the sides of the ship. His primary magical attack is a ranged touch attack, and these guys are denied their dex bonus when climbing. He would only miss on a nat 1. However, he refused to approach the railing to pick them off.
He has thalassophobia (http://www.answers.com/topic/thalassophobia-psychology?cat=health), and ever since that trip, he has refused to be on a ship ever again. Fortunately, last level, he gained the ability to fly. :D
As far as "acting elven" goes, he just occasionally says things like, "Never doubt the senses of an elf." Gotta love those skill bonuses.

My last two characters were elves. I tend to try for Haughty without nececarily being Stuffy. I also try to have my character look at the long term and be less concerned with time limites or things others might see of an imediate nature.

However both were built on a classic 'elf' theme the first of them being an elven archer to be later a wizard and the current one being a champion of corellion lorethian. So i tended to go out of my way to exude alot of elven cliche things.

It was made easier in the case of the second character because the dwarf in our party really is a buffoon and it helps prove my characters point.

Lessee ... last one I played was a somewhat surly, unpleasant 'brawler' style of fighter (Power Attack + Greataxe)/Rogue mix, who spat whenever anybody mentioned Corellon Larethian's name because he blamed him for the thread of the drow and orcs, based on mythology ("So, a bunch of his elves turn against him, and he doesn't kill them, nooooo, he sends them underground to become more powerful than us. Nice thinking, moron.)". Pretty much turned his back on the 'elvish heritage' and did things his own way.

Lotsa fun, but the fanboys in the group whizzed all over it.

Whaaaat? But that idea is awesome! Vaguely reminds me of that atheist cleric I've been wanting to play...
