As much a DM as a race question, this seems the most appropriate place for it all the same. I hope it isn't too mature (so please don't go into practical details, that isn't the problem anyway).

(okay, so maybe I shouldn't give context)

Question:
Do the rules provide for Half Elves and Mermaids having children? If so, how long would it take for the child to be born?
Most importantly: what on earth would it be?

You know, this type of thread is on the 1001 most controversal threads thread. I thank you for giving me the oppurotunity of seeing one up close.

I did not, and I suppose you're welcome. I'm not trying to stir up anything controversial; I'm just interested in the race/rules, if there are any.

Dm's Call?

Besides I don't think there are rules for that, unless you want to check that crossbreed book whatever it was called. However even in that book all it did was state a bunch of half this half that without putting any real guidlines to do it yourself.

That could work. There's also the Amphibious template in stormwrack. Or you could just come up with a balanced half-mermaid template, and apply it to a half-elf.

I worked on a mermaid race for the Zelda RPG project. We facilitated half-mermaids with a racial feat, giving them a base land speed of 20' and a +10 racial bonus to Disguise checks to appear human (none of this messy "it shapeshifts a tail in water" crap). Since the Mermaid's abilities overshadow the half-elf's, I'd say you could use the same feat and say they get the bonus to appear as a half-elf.

Speaking of mermaids, wanna see something silly, play a mermaid monk and apply the bonus speed to land movement. That's just got to look funny.

Well there is always the third party book Bastards & Bloodlines: A Guidebook to Halfbreeds (http://www.amazon.com/Bastards-Bloodlines-Guidebook-Halfbreeds-Renown/dp/0972675604/ref=sr_1_1/103-7228081-4765460?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176014397&sr=8-1). It's a very good book which has a section for making your own halfbreeds.

Anyways, according to Stormwrack Humans are able to mate with Aquatic Elves, so I'm pretty sure a Half-Elf can mate with a Merfolk/Mermaid. If the two parents (your players maybe?) really care that much for each other and want a child you as the DM can justify it in a number of ways. For example, you could say that they found magical help to conceive, you can have them seek divine intervention to have their love child, or you can just say that such halfbreeds are able to be born naturally in your campaign.

As for it's stats I'd suggest keeping things simple by just using the rules for the Aquatic Half-Elf I mentioned, with the slight alteration that it can breathe underwater as well as on the surface.

Just my :twocents:. :)

By the rules, humans and merfolk can't breed together, so there's no reason why elves or half-elves could breed with merfolk either. In my games, I guess I'd just say that no child could be born of such an union.

If you want to house rule that they can, though, since humans and merfolk lookso much alike anyway, then this thread is already filled with good ideas. I'd second checking a look at the Seakin from races of Destiny. I think they're the closest thing we have from half-human half-merfolk hybrid.

DM's call.

But I would think it would be a slightly fish like half-elf. Dunno what to call it though. It might have a lowered swim speed than a mermaid and maybe some other things.
