Humanoid Squid [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-08-07, 05:30 PM This is just an idea I cooked up in class today, can I have some help/critique on it?

Humanoid Squids are basically humanoid, but their arms are long, boneless, and rubbery with sharp suckers on the ends. They have eight shorter, less maneuverable tentacles sprouting 4 to a side from their chest.

-Medium size
- +2 con, -2 wis (kinda crazy)
-Speed 30, swim 20
- +1 natural armor if skin is moist
-Humanoid Squids can see in little or no light underwater (ONLY) for up to 240 ft. They can still see color
-Natural weapons: 2 Rakes, 1d4 slashing
- +4 Hide (can change skin color slightly)
-Can breathe both water and air
-Tentacle casting: A Humanoid Squid that can cast spells may cast a second spell with its extra torso arms. This spell is cast with a 20% failure chance, due to the lack of muscular control. It has no ability to take extra standard actions, so the spell must be cast in a separate turn. However, if the spell requires concentration, the Humanoid Squid may maintain it by making a DC 15 + spell level Concentration check. If it has other effects that can be triggered, such as the bolts from Call Lightning, they may be taken as swift actions. Tentacle Casting is only usable with spells of third level or lower, and only on those that are not of the highest level you are able to cast.
-Favored Class: Sorcerer or Monk

Two racial feats:

Improved Tentacle Cast [racial]
Prerequisites: Humanoid Squid, ability to cast arcane spells of 2nd level or higher.
Benefit: Remove the spell failure chance from Tentacle Cast.

Tentacle Grasp [racial]
Prerequisites: Humanoid Squid, Improved Grapple, Improved Unarmed Strike
Benefit: You gain the Improved Grab ability. Increase the die type for unarmed strike by one (d3 to d4 to d6 to d8 to d10 to d12) and you can deal slashing damage with your unarmed strike.

06-08-07, 05:37 PM While one could certainly use the anthropomorphic info in Savage Species to make a humanoid squid, I had two similar creatures in my games; the krakidan, a human/kraken crossbreed, and the sea flayer, a mind flayer/morkoth experiment.

now go into more detail as to how a character can gain and retain his moisture. :rofl:

Thats a poorly devisied mechanic, just give them darkvision.

-Can breathe both water and air

the amphibious trait is worth LA+1 by itself.

Tentacle casting is over-elaborate and ill-conceived.
You could give them a version of the quiken spell feat that can be applied to spontaneous spells, but this ability would be worth about another LA.

chruch wise, they make pretty poor sorcerers and pretty poor monks.
And the fluff is almost entirely non-existent.

It does.

Tentacle casting is basically, you can cast another spell (separate action) with your tentacles, it takes 20% failure, but you can concentrate on it while doing other stuff and use triggered actions (call lightning) as swift instead of standard, Or (Forgot this) if already swift, as no action at all.

EDIT: Replace the underwater vision with darkvision 120.
Skin must be moistened once per 2 hours with 1 gallon of water to keep the natural armor; that's a full-round action that provokes AoO's. Here's another racial feat:

Tentacled Savant [racial]
Prerequisites: Improved Tentacle Cast
Benefit: 3 + Con mod times per day, you may cast another spell via tentacle cast that does not require an action, allowing it to be cast simultaneously with another spell. This spell is subject to the spell failure chance as if you did not possess the Improved Tentacle Cast feat.

Teuthidian Mage [racial]
Prerequisites: Humanoid Squid, ability to cast arcane spells of 4th level or higher.
Benefit: The level of spells usable with Tentacle Cast increases by 3.
Special: You may take this feat multiple times. Its effects stack, allowing Tentacle Cast to be used with first 6th level or lower and then 9th level or lower.
