03-27-07, 10:13 PM In the MM3, page 63, it says in the field Advancement : "4-6 HD (Medium); 7-9 (Large)"

Normally, only creature that has "By character class" can gain levels in classes...

But, in the "Goatfolk as Character", it says that the favored class is Barbarian (so it supposes that goatfolk can earn levels in classes.

So what does it mean ? fristly, i thought that they mean that Ibixian can gain levels as other PC races, and they increase in size as they reach level 3 (so then haviong 7 HD). But if it was that, why saying "7-9 HD (Large)" Can't a Goatfolk earn more than 9 HD (and thus only 6 level class)

OR

They jsut put it for using them both ways... DM muse the normal Advancement by HD like the Chapter Evolving monsters says and if a Player want to be of that class, he still can get any classes, increasing to Large size when reaching 7 HD ?

This is being advanced by skill.

Advancing creatures by “type” represents a singular freak of nature that happened to be bigger then the normal specimen, or a creature on steroids.

Not quite. Creatures with HD advancement options can take class lvs just as readily, just that they typically advance in HD instead. There is nothing stopping, say a balor, from taking up lvs in blackguard over advancing in additional outsider HD.:)

So it means the goatfolk can opt to either advance in HD or class lvs.

03-27-07, 10:49 PM This is one of the odd exceptions to the "if a creature advances by class, it can't advance by level" rule. It makes sense to have a figgin' huge goat, but only as a "boss"-type monster. Basically, they can advance either way, but if they advance by Hit Dice then they're definitely a monster.

Or it's a typo. But we all know that never happens. :P

No. They do not. The advancement is only based on racial Hit Dice, not class levels. If they did, it would probably be noted in their racial abilities description.

03-27-07, 11:08 PM No. Size increase only occurs when you advance in racial HD(this represents you being naturally tougher, stronger, larger etc) than the norm for your race by virtue of your "DNA". This cannot be replicated by class lvs, which represents any special training you may have had.
