Idea for a race, but where to start? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was watching an episode of Star Trek: Voyager with a race that reproduces by reviving the dead of other races and altering them.

I think this is a great concept for a D&D race with all the magic in the world. But, it's a vague concept so I don't know how to implement it.

Should they be Psionic or Magical or something else? How do they interact with other races? Do they steal the corpses they use? What about the former inhabitants soul? those and other questions need to be answered and I have no idea how to answer them...

I'll edit this post with the rules for this race when I start on it... Thanks in advance for the help...

---Edit---

Hed'aes are not born, they are made. Freshly dead bodies from (medium sized) humanoid races are found and revived with a secret ritual which chemically and magically alter the body into a Hed'aes. This process creates a new soul to inhabit the body, while rare some of these souls (about 5%) retain the memories of the bodies past life.
It is up to each Hed'aes family to find the bodies that will become their family members. They go to different lengths to gain these bodies. While some races see their actons as disrespecting the dead, the Hed'aes feel that dead bodies are simply empty vessels, and that they are refilling those vessels that no one else are willing to revive.

Personality: Hed'aes usually retain (more-or-less) the personality they had before death. They tend to view all life as precious.

Physical Description: Hed'aes are about the same height as Humans, with mottled purple and blue-grey skin. Their ears are just holes. Their eyes are often highly exotic colors. They have no hair.

Relations: Hed'aes live in their own societies, apart from other races who distrust them due to their methods of reproduction. They hate Illithids who they view as destructive to life. They are on friendly terms with races like the Githyanki, and Githzerai, who actively dispise Illithids as much as they do.

Alignment: Hed'aes tend toward no particular alignment, not even neutral. The best and worst are found among them

Hed'aes Lands: Many Hed'aes live in secret hidden enclaves.

Religion: Hed'aes worship gods who offer second chances, because they view themselves as having been given their second chance.

Language: Hed'aes speak Common and their own language.

Names: Hed'aes are given new names when they are reborn.

Adventurers: Hed'aes adventure for different reasons, but often to help their race. Often they adventure to find bodies or wealth for their clan.

Hed'aes Racial Traits

+2 Int -4 Cha

Aberration: Hed'aes are not subject to spells or effects that affect humanoids only, such as charm person or dominate person.

Medium: As medium creatures Hed'aes have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size
Hed'aes base land speed is 30 ft.

Lifesense(sp): Deathwatch at will. Hed'aes can sense the state of the life forces around them. Unlike the spell, using this ability is not considered evil.

Darkvision out to 60 ft (like most abberations)

Automatic Languages: Common, Hed'aes

Bonus Languages: Any (except secret languages such as Druidic)

Favored Class: Any

The thing that comes to me first is undead, or deathless (a positive energy version of undead).

This would make them a magical race, and very possibly an acquired template.

Choose a rough alignment for them; that should determine how they interact.

A mostly good race might ask in advance to use corpses, while an evil race might steal them. Conversion might even be an option for terminally ill people of other races.

Maybe the old soul becomes the new one, with no memory? Ormaybe memory is retained. It's a cool idea, and I look forward to seeing how it trns out.

Hey, I watched that episode. It was on Spike yesterday, wasn't it? I only watched the latter part of it.

As for the race, I'm thinking a living dead race type. Ya-know, like a living construct type. It isn't realy either, but it incorperated parts of both. it woul;d be intresting, and it could make borg easier to make.

Sorry for the lack of help, I just posted on impuse. I'm away from my books right now. :( sorry.

Edit: Look at the Race Compedium 2. (it's linked in all of the latter posts of the original). Their are several undead/human races their.

I was leaning more toward abberration, they seem to be alive, but don't reproduce normally, plus they have an alien mindset (from our perspective), and yes it was on yesterday on Spike, that's what gave me the idea...

so far, I have this:

______ are not born, they are made. Freshly dead bodies from (medium sized) humanoid races are found and revived with a larval ______ and a secret ritual which chemically and psionically alter the body into a ______. This process creates a new soul to inhabit the body, while rare some of these souls (about 5%) retain the memories of the bodies past life.
It is up to each ______ family to find the bodies that will become their family members. They go to different lengths to gain these bodies. While some races see their actons as disrespecting the dead, the ______ feel that dead bodies are simply empty vessels, and that they are refilling those vessels that no one else are willing to revive.

Personality: ______ usually retain (more-or-less) the personality they had before death. They tend to view all life as precious.

Physical Description: ______ are about the same height as Humans, with mottled purple and grey skin, their ears are just holes, and have a large bump on the back of their heads. Their eyes are sometimes their original color and other times highly exotic colors. They have no hair.

Relations: ______ live in their own societies, apart from other races who distrust them due to their methods of reproduction. They are related, through their ritual, to Elans, and genetically, to Illithids. Despite their relation they hate Illithids who they view as destructive to life. They are on friendly terms with races like the Githyanki, and Githzerai, who actively dispise Illithids as much as they do.

Alignment: ______ tend toward no particular alignment, not even neutral. The best and worst are found among them

______ Lands: Many ______ live in secret hidden enclaves.

Religion: ______ worship gods who offer second chances, because they view themselves as having been given their second chance.

Language: ______ speak Common and their own language.

Names: ______ are given new names when they are reborn.

Adventurers: ______ adventure for different reasons, but often to help their race. Often they adventure to find bodies or wealth for their clan.

______ Racial Traits

+2 Int +2 Wis -4 Cha
Aberration: ______ are not subject to spells or effects that affect humanoids only, such as charm person or dominate person.
Medium: As medium creatures ______ have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size
______ base land speed is 30 ft.
Naturally Psionic: ______ gain 2 additional power points at 1st level. This benefit does not grant them the ability to manifest powers unless they gain that ability through another source, such as levels in a psionic class.
???

what else do you think I should add or remove?

There's the Elan from Expanded Psionics. Yeah, they transform the living, but it's a decent base for what you want. They even have a charisma penalty(-2).

I know, I have the Expanded Psionics Handbook, hence the "Naturally Psionic" but thank you :)

Instead of psionics, why not use something more closely related to the flavor? For example:
Lifesense : Deathwatch at will. ______ can sense the state of the life forces around them. Unlike the spell, using this ability is not considered evil.

Yours to use, or not. I like making names, and that was the first one I thought of for these guys.

The borg are just creatures with the half-machine template with a little stuff added. Try that for some inspiration
