I know it says they're immune to sleep and sleep effects, as all elves are, but one of my players is insisting that they would be subject to chemically induced states of sleep or reverie, especially those chemicals that induce such a state by slowing down the heart rate. I say that any chemical that relies on brain chemistry to induce sleep would be useless while those that work on the heart would only induce sluggishness. What's your guys' take? |
| Kobold_Avenger01-28-08, 02:40 PM | Well drow sleep poison works on drow and other elves. Of course i'm not sure how drow sleep poison works medically. |
| calronmoonflower01-28-08, 06:12 PM | If the drug/poison causes unconsciousness rather than putting the subject to sleep, then it bypasses the immunity. Remember that elves are immune because they are not physically capable of sleep. Both Wild Dwarf Knockout Poison and Drow Knockout Poison do this. |
| Shadowfax701-28-08, 06:47 PM | Remember that elves are immune because they are not physically capable of sleep. This is not stated in the rules. It can surely be your opinion, but note that Half-elves do sleep and yet have "Immunity to sleep spells and similar magical effects". Specifically, the drow. I know it says they're immune to sleep and sleep effectsThis is not what is stated about Elves in the rules. The Elves (and Drow) Have "Immunity to magic sleep effects", thus they are not immune to any non-magical poison which would put them to sleep (this includes Drow Sleep poison as it is an Extraordinary poison, not Supernatural). |

It can surely be your opinion, but note that Half-elves do sleep and yet have "Immunity to sleep spells and similar magical effects". It is stated that "Elves do not sleep, as members of the other common races do. Instead, and elf meditates in a deep trance for 4 hours a day." It is listed on page 15 of the Player's handbook. Also half-elves are half-human. Therefor have some human traits. |
| Salla01-28-08, 07:12 PM | Elves (and half-elves) are immune to sleep magic, but not non-magical sleep-inducers like Drow Poison. |
| calronmoonflower01-28-08, 08:16 PM | Elves (and half-elves) are immune to sleep magic, but not non-magical sleep-inducers like Drow Poison. Drow poison causes unconsciousness, not sleep. |
| M-bark01-29-08, 02:56 AM | Drow poison causes unconsciousness, not sleep. But could you tell the difference, if you found a person asleep/unconscious and you never saw the person falling unconscious/asleep? |
| Red_Wizard01-29-08, 12:30 PM | It is stated that "Elves do not sleep, as members of the other common races do. Instead, and elf meditates in a deep trance for 4 hours a day." It is listed on page 15 of the Player's handbook. Also half-elves are half-human. Therefor have some human traits. It says they DO NOT sleep, not that they CAN NOT sleep. Many novels have shown Elves who do indeed sleep. Reverie is simply a preferred method by most, as it is superior to sleep, offering the same effects for a decreased rest period. -RW |
| Shiftkitty01-29-08, 12:49 PM | But could you tell the difference, if you found a person asleep/unconscious and you never saw the person falling unconscious/asleep? That's a matter of perception on the part of the viewer. Actual unconciousness is, I think, different from the state of sleep. |
| Neutronium_Dragon01-29-08, 04:54 PM | The FRCS had a sleep-inducing alchemical gas bomb (essentially) which it specifically notes as working on creatures that are immune to magical sleep effects (which basically means elves, since they're the only creatures I can think of with that trait) but not on those which are immune to poison (since that's essentially what the gas is). So non-magical methods of inducing sleep (poisons) clearly are intended to work on elves - the immunity is geared towards Sleep spells and their ilk, not all forms of sleep. |
