In today's day and age, should race even matter anymore? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I think we are all in agreement that the entire point of dnd is to play a game that is as realistic and believeable as possible.

A lot of people feel that because of racism, it is unrealistic to get groups of different racial backgrounds to work together in an effective coalition. I argue that it depends on leadership.
William J. Wilson

This quote rings so true to me.

I mean just think of the example that we would be setting for our kids if we were able to get girlfriends and have kids, ya know?

Like just the other day I was eating fruity pebbles at the table while working on a few character sheets and my mom was like what is all the stuff? And I was showing her my goliath rage mage and my half gnome half pixie berserker and explaining how their stats measure up and they were awesome and she was like wait.. wait.. you mean all the races are different? That's wrong isn't it.

And I got to thinking, we have come a long way since the civil war and first edition, maybe it's time we take a step in the right direction. I mean I've played dnd 80+ hours a week for the last 11 years and if i had approached the game in this way i think i could've done a lot of good in the world.

Thoughts?

I'm one of these people who take the stance that claiming all races are the same is racism.

But back on topic, race is used differently in D&D. It isn't comparing black and white. It's comparing human and halfling. Species, not race. This adds half-elves and half-orcs, but you get mules, don't you? And if wizards can alter reality in these worlds, sterile crossbreeds aren't a stretch of the imagination.

To use a real-world example, does a human have the same stats as another species, like a tiger? Nope. So, why should a half-pixie be the same as a goliath?

the races in D&D are REAL races, on the biological side. They are distinct beings from humans, albeit some are closer to humans and can interbreed with.

Also, some races have subraces, again, biological definitions.

But if you go around, there IS settings where there is distinct cultures and 'phenotyoes' for humans (and others), like Eberron, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms... They are all humans/else, only with cultural differences.

Now, important... D&D is NOT meaned to be modern in tech and culture, and there is possible racisms in campaign worlds, like the thayan vs the rashemani in Fr, or the ancient blood between sueloises and baklunishes in GH.

I think we are all in agreement that the entire point of dnd is to play a game that is as realistic and believeable as possible.

I disagree most profoundly with this statement. D&D (and heroic fantasy) are, by definition, unrealistic and unbelieveable. If I wanted realism, I'd play some sort of math-intensive, modern, real-world RPG.

The point of D&D is to have fun. If that means playing flying hamster sorcerers and fighting the Dread Demon of Pinkness, so be it. A well-run D&D game simulates reality, but it is a highly abstract form of reality.

I mean just think of the example that we would be setting for our kids if we were able to get girlfriends and have kids, ya know?

The example of a party of individuals overcoming their superficial differences and working together for the greater good?
The example that everyone is different, but no one is inherently superior? That we all have special talents and abilities?
The idea that friendship and loyalty transcend race, a la Gimli and Legolas? If it's good enough for Tolkien...

Races are different. Heck, women and men are different. To claim that "equal" = "indistinguisable" is pointless.

Acknowledging differences isn't racism. When the elves start claiming that Dexterity is superior to Costitution, and therefore dwarves are inherently inferior...that's racism.

...I mean I've played dnd 80+ hours a week for the last 11 years...

Man, that's a lot of D&D. I'm lucky to get 12 hours a week.

This isn't meant as an attack, BTW. You wanted my opinions, and there they are.

Edit: Also, as others have noted, D&D "race" isn't the same as real-world "race." D&D "race" is more properly "species." Elven subraces (wood, wild, drow, gray) are technically elven races--races of the elven species.

My thoughts are that this is the second time in less than a week that I've seen you mention this "I've played 80+ hours of D&D a week for the last 11 years."

Your join date is also October 2007. In other words, a few days ago.

Take from that what you will, people.

Also, I agree with everything Talisman said.

I definitely see your point talisman.
We are actually in the middle of a campaign right now but i'm going to talk to my mom about this when she gets back with my oreo pizza and cheetos.

Shouldn't that be a d20? o_O An attack roll is 1d20, whilst a damage roll is a different die. Eh, I get the joke anyway :P

Also, 80+ hours a week for 11 years? o_O If there are 168 hours in a week... you're playing 11 hours a day? Surely you don't have that much free time :P When I play, it's usually 6 hours, once a week or couple of weeks.

As for my opinions, D&D is a fantasy game, and one of it's staples is the menagerie of monsters you can play. Fantastical monsters with unique cultures, without the uniform dullness that is just playing humans, and the ease of creating monotype cultures for each race. (How many multicultural orcs/goblins/mind flayers do YOU see? ;))

Finally:
<Demon_of_Pinkness> This Layer of the Abyss is simply fabulous!

Where did the Demon of Pinkness come from? I don't see a post by a person of that name.

The Pinkness could refer to color of flesh it prefers to eat. Though your interpretation is funny :)

Isn't Fierna kind of like that? I mean, at least up until the Fiendish Codex 2, that is...

Thanks bahamut. I couldn't find it.

Now I want to play an awakened hamster sorcerer. It'll be a nice fight against the Awakened Rat Lich that our DM threw at us last month... I asked him, what's next? Gnat Warlocks? :)
